Chapter Sixty
『the meeting of a dude named ego』

⋅⋆✯✼⋆⋅

"Look at this!" Gamora yelled. They were all standing just outside the wreckage of their ship, Gamora was in a state of rage though Jace couldn't blame her. Jace had his arm around Kain—who had kept seeing if he was okay, which of course Jace nodded at, he did feel okay but was a little shaken up at what had happened, plus he was also tired from his usage of his abilities. Adrian—on the other hand—had somewhat put some distance between himself and Jace and Kain, it wasn't like Jace was worried, but the half-breed wondered what was going on with the assassin. "Where is the other half of our ship?"

"My ship," Peter corrected, though Jace rolled his eyes slightly. A part of Jace wanted to hit Peter for it, though he didn't have the energy to do such a thing.

"Either one of you could have gotten us through that field had you flown with what's between your ears instead of what's between your legs!" Gamora ranted, her finger pointed accusing both Rocket and Peter.

Jace would have to admit that Gamora had a point, the two were being assholes to each other throughout the entire chance and throughout the Asteroid field. There was a part of Jace which really wanted to punch either one for being idiots throughout it all, but he knew that Kain would probably hold him back from doing such a thing. He wondered for a moment what the hell was going through their minds to even consider risking such a thing.

Though he knew that he wasn't much to talk when it came to putting people in danger, but even still, there was something different about the way that Rocket and Peter were acting though Jace couldn't exactly tell what was going on. He wondered for a brief moment whether or not he should ask when he got a moment alone with Peter, though he was sure that it was nothing.

"If what's between my legs had a hand on it, I guarantee I could have landed this ship with it." Peter mumbled. Jace and Kain pulled a face as they then shared a look with one another.

"Peter," Gamora spoke, "we almost died because of your arrogance."

"More like because he," Peter pointed at Rocket, "stole the Anulax batteries!"

"They're called Harbulary batteries." Drax tried to correct. Jace shook his head as Adrian simply gave Drax an odd look.

"No, they're no!" Peter argued.

Jace moved to lowly speak to Kain. "And you thought I was a child."

"You are, they're just worse." Kain muttered.

Jace rolled his eyes though couldn't help himself but to smile. As much as he loved and cared for these idiots he called his friends, sometimes he couldn't help but feel as if needed to bang his head against something anytime any of them annoy him in some capacity. Though the smile dropped when he heard Rocket speak.

"Do you know why I did it, Star-Munch? Hmm?" Rocket asked.

Peter looked dead ahead. "I'm not gonna answer to 'Star-Munch.'"

"I did it because I wanted to!" Rocket yelled slightly.

"Dick." Peter mumbled.

Jace groaned slightly, rubbing his face. "You're both children, I swear to god."

Kain elbowed him slightly. Though, Jace's eyes were at Adrian as he noticed the way which the assassin stared at Nebula like he was about to do something. The half-breed moved away from Kain—despite the odd look which Kain had given him—and moved to touch Adrian's arm. Adrian jumped under his touch, though had relaxed almost too quicky than he would have liked when he noticed that it was Jace. Jace placed his hand in Adrian's, pulling him back over towards Kain—who seemed to be looking towards the ground.

"What are we even talking about this for?" Rocket asked. "We just had a little man save us by blowing up fifty ships!"

"How little?" Drax asked.

"Well, I don't know, like this?" Rocket pressed his fingers together only showing a few inches of space between them.

"A little one-inch man saved us?" Gamora asked, somewhat not believing as to what Rocket was saying.

"Well, if he got closer, I'm sure he would be much larger." Rocket tried to explain. Jace just found himself staring at the overgrown raccoon, a part of him didn't want to believe Rocket, though Jace knew that something else could've blown up those ships, he knew that it wasn't something that he could've done—at least, Jace thought that he couldn't blow up multiple ships all at once.

"That's how eyesight works, you stupid raccoon," Peter harshly spoke.

"Don't call me a raccoon!" Rocket snapped.

"I'm sorry, I took it too far," Peter tried to innocently speak. "I meant trash panda."

Rocket looked around for a moment, somewhat unsure all while Jace was stood there shaking his head. He couldn't help but almost stifle his laugh. His other arm had found its way around Kain once more while his thumb rubbed circles into Adrian's hand before the assassin ripped his hand away.

"Is that better?"

Drax shook his head. "I don't know."

"It's worse. It's so much worse." Peter laughed slightly.

"You son of a. . ." Rocket then went to pounce at Peter as he let out a small growl. The two then bickered with one another again.

Kain looked up at Jace, taking the distraction between Rocket and Peter as an opportunity to whisper. "Why are you being so nice to him?" His eyes went to Adrian who was standing there with his arms crossed, looking into the forest around them.

Adrian didn't seem pleased as a whole about being here. Jace knew that at any point when Adrian had a chance, he'd tell Jace that they should've left when they had a chance. He thought about Kain's question for a moment, he knew that he shouldn't be nice to Adrian in the slightest, but he couldn't help but think about the way that Adrian had nightmares, it was something that made Jace feel bad. Whenever Jace had nightmares, he'd used to have Peter there to help him through it all, and from the looks of it, Adrian had no one to help him through it.

Jace knew that the likelihood of Adrian ever telling him about what the nightmares are about was slim to none, but Jace couldn't help but think that Adrian needed someone to talk to in some way. He couldn't even begin on what it could've been like to be raised into becoming an assassin. Jace supposed that in a way, he felt bad for Adrian even if he didn't want to fully admit it, knowing that by all accounts, he should actually hate Adrian in some way.

Jace shrugged. "Everyone needs someone nice in their life, Kai, even assassins."

Before Kain could say anything, Nebula spoke up. "Someone followed you through the jump point."

Jace looked up to see how a ship came close to them, as if the ship intended to land. The group ended up forming a circle, their backs somewhat pressed against one another. Kain ended up between Jace and Adrian—who both held their weapons in their hands. Kain as a whole wasn't sure what was going on with Jace—or Adrian for that matter—though all Kain knew was that despite him wanting Jace, there was a part of him which was conflicted in regards to Adrian, he wasn't sure whether he wanted Adrian in the same way which he has Jace, yet he still wants Jace in that way.

"Set me free, you'll need my help." Nebula spoke.

"I'm not a fool, Nebula." Gamora said.

"You are a fool if you deprive yourself a hand in combat," Nebula argued.

Jace scoffed. "We have Adrian."

Kain grunted towards Jace, Adrian just smiled as if he planned to take that as some form of compliment. It was Gamora that spoke up then. "You'll attack me the moment I let you go."

"No, I won't," Nebula said, though it was clear enough that it was a lie.

"You'd think an evil supervillain would learn how to properly lie." Peter remarked.

Adrian let out a somewhat breathy laugh. "Looks like daddy dearest didn't teach you that."

Before anyone could react towards the comment which Adrian had made, Drax had somewhat joked. "I bet it's the one-inch man."

This white ship lowered itself towards the ground, in a way the ship's build seemed to somewhat remind Jace of an egg—like a very shiny and polished egg. In some ways this ship seemed like someone of high standards seemed to own it. As the ship landed, it crushed anything and everything which stood in its way to land. An orange-like door opened as an elder man and a woman with antennas walked out—by this time, the group had formed a line, Kain being somewhat behind both Adrian and Jace.

A part of Jace was worried that this was one of the assassins that were after Kain, though when he stared at the man, he couldn't be sure. He knew that he shouldn't let looks deceive him, but at the same time he knew that Kain's father—Emperor Aegon—could possibly still be sending Assassins after Kain even after telling Aegon that Kain was 'dead.' At least he thinks he told Aegon that Kain was dead, he couldn't quite remember. It felt like it's been ages since he saw the Emperor.

"After all these years, I've finally found you." The elder man spoke, his eyes mainly on Peter. A part of Jace thought to attack, there was something off about him. Every instinct inside of Jace was buzzing, telling him that this man was some form of enemy. He wanted nothing more than to protect Peter and the others.

"And who the hell are you?" Peter asked.

"I figured my rugged good looks would make that obvious," the elder spoke. "My name is Ego, and I'm your dad, Peter."

There was something in Jace which somewhat broke. Yes okay, the probability of Peter's dad coming to look for him would have been likely, but now that he has there was something which made Jace almost loose his breath. In an odd way, as much as Jace is happy for Peter, made him realise that he'd never see his own dad again.

Don't get him wrong, he knew that he should be happy for Peter, there was still his dull ache inside of him that was telling him that something was wrong, but it was something that he couldn't be sure on. He knew that if what this man says is true, then he'd have to believe it. And yet, whether it was a new growth in jealousy or something else, he didn't want to believe that this random man was Peter's father.

Night grew on Berhert, they ended up around a fire which Jace lit. He'd also built the fire himself, wanting nothing more than a distraction, plus if this man was telling the truth, he'd at least want Peter and Ego to spend some time together. Jace's thoughts were all over the place, when it came to what happened and he didn't know how to fully adapt to anything in regards to what he'd heard.

After the fire was made, they'd made themselves some food, Jace couldn't help but pick at his food. As much as he knew that he needed to eat, he couldn't bring himself to do such a thing. Jace knew that he was exhausted from his usage of his abilities when the Sovereign attacked them and that food would help combat that in some way, but with all his thoughts running wild, he couldn't bring himself to eat anything.

"I hired Yondu to pick you up when your mother passed away," Ego explained. Jace was opposite Ego, on the other side of the fire, he found himself almost glaring at the man. "But instead of returning you, Yondu kept you. I have no clue as to why."

"Well, I'll tell you why," Peter said. "Because I was a skinny little kid who could squeeze into places adults couldn't. It made it easier for thievin'."

That was the same reason as to why Yondu kept Jace, a part of Jace thought that it was believable, but at the same time, Jace always felt as if the reason why Yondu kept him was so that Peter wasn't lonely. He'd always thought that he'd been stolen for that reason, and the lie of being told that he was just littler and could fit into those smaller places was simply a lie, a coverup, that Peter just needed a friend.

"Well, I've been trying to track you down ever since." Ego spoke. Jace tried to keep his face as neutral as humanly possible, his back was leaning against the log that everyone else was sat on, he could feel Kain by his shoulder.

"I thought Yondu was your father." Drax said, suddenly.

"What?" Peter asked, somewhat shocked that Drax could think that. Jace couldn't help but look at Drax then. "We've been together this whole time, and you thought that Yondu was my actual blood relative?"

Drax shoved a mouthful of food in his mouth. "You look exactly alike."

"One's blue!" Rocket argued.

"No, he's not my father!" Peter assured. "Yondu was the guy who abducted me, kicked the crap out of me so I could learn to fight, put me against Jace continually to test our fighting abilities, and kept me in terror by threatening to eat me."

"Eat you?" Ego asked, somewhat shocked about that. "Oh, that son of a bitch."

Both Adrian and Kain then looked towards Jace, he hadn't spoken a word since they sat down. Jace was playing with the ring on his finger, though his eyes sometimes worked their way to the fire in front of them. Jace felt Kain's hand either on his shoulder or stroking his hair, though even that hadn't gotten a response out of Jace. Jace's eyes were watching as each flame flickered in its pit. In some ways staring at an open fire always distracted Jace, made him think a lot more than anything.

He knew that being in his thoughts was something that he shouldn't be but at the same time, a part of him couldn't remain focused on what the hell was going on around him. He wanted to be happy that Ego had tracked Peter down, that there was a chance that Peter could have some family in his life, and yet every negative emotion screamed at Jace.

"How'd you locate us now?" Gamora asked.

"Well, even where I reside, out past the edge of what's known, we've heard tell about the man they call Star-Lord," Ego explained which somewhat caused Jace to roll his eyes. "What say we head out there right now?" He then stood up. "Your associates are welcome. Even that triangle-faced monkey there." Rocket somewhat looked offended yet confused. "It's unlike any other place you've ever seen. And there, I can explain your very special heritage." He said that while looking at Peter. "Finally get to be the father I've always wanted to be." He paused for a moment. "Excuse me, I've gotta take a whiz."

Jace almost couldn't control his face then, he could feel the slight disgust come onto his face at everything that Ego said. He'd found himself glaring at Ego as he walked off to have some privacy. Kain seemed to know that something was bothering Jace, and he'd quickly made an excuse for the pair of them before dragging Jace to a more private area. Jace quickly said to Adrian to not go anywhere and to not do anything which might cause them trouble—which the assassin rolled his eyes at and grunted slightly.

Kain dragged Jace to the middle of the woods before turning to face Jace. There was something quite unreadable written across Kain's face which Jace couldn't quite decipher, no matter how hard he tried. Jace ended up looking away for a brief moment before Kain's hand touched the side of his face, bringing him to look at Kain's blue eyes. A part of Jace couldn't help but relax at Kain's touch and the look in Kain's eyes was enough to almost calm his thoughts.

"Jace," Kain's voice was low, "I'm not going to ask if you're okay, because you're clearly not, but whatever it is, please don't think about pushing me away, okay?"

Jace shook his head slightly. "There's nothing to worry about, Kain." He knew that he should be honest with Kain, that Kain wouldn't judge him for his thoughts, but at the same time, Jace knew that he couldn't cope with vocalising what the hell was in his mind.

Kain somewhat sighed, his hands dropping to Jace's, Kain took Jace's hands and lightly squeezed them. "You've been playing with the ring all night and I know better than anyone that you only play with something when somethings bothering you. Plus, you're terrible at hiding your facial expressions."

There was a moment of silence between the pair, Jace either looked at Kain or towards the floor. He couldn't find the right words to explain what was going on in his head considering that what was going on was a mess. He wanted to say something but there was nothing of which he could come out with, actually he wasn't that sure as to what he wanted to say. He knew that whatever his thoughts were in regards to Ego could make him sound like an actual dickhead, and yet the thoughts were eating at him.

Jace let out a sigh before pulling Kain into a hug which the prince didn't expect. "I'm going to be completely honest with you, Kain, I don't know what's going on. It's just with Ego here saying how he's Peter's dad and shit, just makes me miss my dad and Terra. It's stupid to think about it but I don't know. I should be happy that Peter has his father back, but—I don't even know."

He wanted to mention the thoughts that he was having regarding his distrust about Ego, but he didn't know how to phrase it without it making it sound as if he was a dick. He wanted to say his distrust, though the more that he thought about it the more that he realised that it was something that he couldn't bring himself to talk about.

Kain rubbed Jace's back. "It's fine, Jace. It was horrible with how your father died, and it's understandable as to why you might miss Terra. But it will get better, it might not seem like it with the pain in your heart, but it'll be easier to bare."

Jace nodded, his chin resting on Kain's shoulder. He didn't say anything, somewhat comfortable in Kain's arms. "I know. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if my parents were still alive, and I hadn't been taken."

It was a thought that he'd occasionally had over the years, he wondered whether he'd found out about what he was a lot earlier, he wondered whether his mother would've taken him to Asgard to show him where she came from. He wondered whether he'd ever meet his father's family. There was a lot that he wondered when it came to what would've happened if his parents were still alive. Would they have told him the truth? What would his life had been like if they'd still been alive, and he hadn't been taken?

Kain made an odd sound as if he hadn't expected Jace to think of such things, his eyebrows scrunching together. "Probably a lot less hectic than what it is at the moment, I guess?"

"Probably," Jace let out a small huffy laugh. "Though, I don't think your dumbass would have survived without me, all that boring prince shit. 'Yes, sir,' 'no, sir,' 'Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo I'm the prince bitch.'"

Kain laughed slightly. "Yeah, you saved me from a lot of shit, Jay. Though either way I think that we would have found our way together whether you were taken or stayed on Terra." Kain's arms had then tightened around Jace. "I know that you miss your parents, and I know that there's more things that are bothering you, but I won't pry if its nothing. I want you to know, my space boy, I love you, and you can talk to me even if the thoughts don't make sense."

"Would have welcomed you with open arms either way, no matter if it was up here or on Terra," Jace mumbled. "I love you too, my prince."

The two parted slightly, just enough for them to rest their foreheads against one another. Jace's hands were round Kain's waist while Kain's were wrapped around Jace's neck. It was Kain who moved their head slightly for a kiss. Jace couldn't help but somewhat smile into it, though it was him who pulled away just enough that his eyes racked over Kain's face as if to memorise his face, he wanted to burn the image of Kain's face into his brain.

"I'm happy I met you," Jace mumbled, raising his hand to stroke Kain's cheek. "You're the one who I want more in this universe. Just you."

Kain shook his head slightly, biting his lip before moving his head further into Jace's palm, he gently kissed Jace's palm. "You're so sappy when you want to be, Jay. I love it."

Jace somewhat grinned as he then leaned into kiss Kain once more before they then made their way back to camp hand in hand. Though before they could make it back to the camp, Kain dragged them behind a tree, kissing him more harshly in an attempt to be somewhat dominant which didn't work well for Kain. Jace ended up laughing a little, muttering how Kain always tried to be dominate, yet failed which ended with Jace having to keep himself quiet for a few moments, panting against a tree.
