39; the wonders of what a world can bring

Chapter Thirty-Nine
『the wonders of what a world can bring』

Adrian found himself amused by the expressions that found their way onto Harriet, Steve's, and Natasha's face. He could tell that it was some sort of a surprise for them to be told that this lost child was Asgardian, though at the same time Adrian could tell that they didn't believe a word that was coming out of his mouth. There was a part of Adrian that was growing more interested in seeing what Jace's reaction would be when Adrian tells him that he's Asgardian.

Steve and Harriet shared a look with one another as if they were talking to each other with nothing but their eyes. It was something that made Adrian wanna gag though he contained himself. Steve turned his attention back to Adrian. "We pulled out what he had on him," Steve stated. "There's nothing on it which indicates that he is Asgardian."

Adrian shrugged. Maybe Terra's technology was truly that shit. He at least thought that their technology would be better designed given the aliens that like to invade the planet. "It's the truth. I don't think it would have been in any Terra documents, though. Whichever parent was Asgardian would have concealed it though only probably told whoever they were close to—like Jace's grandparents and partner."

He knew that he probably should tell them which parent was Asgardian but at the same time, Adrian didn't feel the need to do as such. He was already giving them more than enough information that he liked, though he knew that this was just a means to an end, knowing that once he got the information that he wanted then he'd leave with it in hand.

Harriet and Steve shared another look with one another, clearly unsure on this as a whole. Natasha on the other hand looked directly at Adrian with narrow eyes, like she didn't trust Adrian at all. Adrian wouldn't blame her at all, why would anyone trust someone who just came from space demanding answers from them all?

Adrian wondered for a moment whether they were still all on edge about aliens descending from the sky. If so, Adrian wondered as to why they hadn't updated any of their technology to defeat anything that came into their atmosphere. Though, now that he thought about it, there was a part of him that was happy that they hadn't. It was a stupid thought for him to have.

"What's your plan?" Natasha asked, crossing her arms.

Adrian rolled his shoulders. "Quite simple, really. Read anything about Jace Taylor, from who his parents were, anything medical wise. Just anything which I can get my hands on. I didn't come here to fight anyone or bring an army if that's what you're worried about. I have no interest with this planet, only for the information you can give me for this one person."

"He's lying!" Leah snapped, none of them hearing when she came in. It surprised Adrian that he hadn't noticed her entering, he was normally quick to notice such things. "You honestly expect us to believe that?"

"Leah, he's not," Natasha spoke. "He would have set any of this off and you know why it was built." Natasha gestured to the machine used on Adrian, both knowing who built it and knowing who can't beat it. Adrian found himself wondering how many liars were on this planet that they needed to create a machine to tell.

Leah let out a sigh as she then turned to Adrian. "How do we know we can trust you?"

"You don't," Adrian said. "But the same goes for you lot. I don't know if I can trust you, yet I'm going to because it means my safety. You attack me, I attack back—it's simple. All I want is information about Jace Taylor."

Leah's jaw set as she stared at Adrian. Her arms were crossed, she briefly looked back at both Harriet and Steve to see the pair nod. She let out a sigh as she then released Adrian from the chair. The assassin gave a somewhat sarcastic smile to which she gave back. There was something about Leah that Adrian liked, maybe if he ever returned he'd want to know what's going on inside that head of hers.

Just before Adrian could move, Leah grabbed his arm. "If you dare to hurt anyone in this facility, I will kill you."

"Not if I kill you first," Adrian hissed, ripping his arm out of her grip.

Two guards come beside Adrian and insisted for him to follow them. Adrian stared at them for a moment before doing what they suggested. Nat, Harriet, Steve, and Leah were all around him as they lead him to a more enclosed room. Something was said by Steve to Harriet, clearly noticing how tensed she was with all of it.

Adrian found himself smiling slightly, knowing that he liked having that kind of affect on someone. Though, the one thing that made Adrian curious was how Harriet had powers, from Adrian's understanding Earth lacked the people with abilities. Of course, Adrian barely met people who had abilities, but that wasn't the point.

He knew that there was a small portion of the population that could obtain abilities based on Kree experiments on the people of the planet. He'd heard about how the Kree created Inhumans, created them for their war centuries ago but the entire science experiment was abandoned. Though from what Adrian knew the experiments were a success which was why it got shut down and abandoned. He wondered whether Harriet was one.

Adrian cleared his throat. "You're an Inhuman, aren't you? That's why you have powers, isn't it?"

Harriet's shoulders clearly tensed. She looked back at him for a moment as if she was curious as to how Adrian would know such a thing. "I'm not Inhuman. Why does it matter what I am? How do you know about Inhumans?"

He heard how Steve muttered something under his breath to Harriet as if he didn't like the thought of entertaining Adrian's conversation. Adrian didn't care though, there was a part of him that was surprised that she wasn't Inhuman. If she wasn't Inhuman, then what was she? That was something that he wanted to know but knew that he wasn't going to get that answer no matter how much he questioned it.

Adrian shrugged. "Doesn't necessary matter, just a question. I know about them because I was taught, how the Kree came to this planet and started the experiments, how the Kree view their creations, seeing them as abominations." He noticed the way that Harriet got agitated by Adrian's comments which made him wonder whether or not she knew anyone who was. "If you're not Inhuman, then count me surprised that a normal person like yourself has powers like that. Speaking of powers, do you know if there's another Asgardian living on this planet who can bend fire to her will? I'm not here for her, but I heard word of her when I was looking into Jace."

Adrian was talking out of his ass, he knew that the Asgardian never stayed on Terra. He just wanted to see their reaction. He'd noticed the way that Harriet tensed up, like the mention of fire was something that stressed her out. He was finding all of this amusing, the thought of causing Harriet enough stress was something that brought him more joy than he thought that it would. Was he being an asshole for doing such a thing? Yes. Did he care? No.

"What's the point in this?" Steve shot before Harriet even had the chance to respond. Adrian somewhat smirked, he had a feeling that there was something between the two. "Or do you plan to gloat in a sick and twisted way?"

Adrian wasn't sure whether he was gloating. There wasn't anything to gloat about. Unless Steve meant his knowledge. "Just trying to lighten the mood." Adrian stated. "I mean, if the Kree found out that the Inhumans still existed and any of them went through terrigenesis, they're going to be pissed."

Adrian felt the way that the hallway they were walked through got colder, as if the previous warm atmosphere was being controlled. He found himself looking towards Harriet who was far too tensed than before, as if his words struck a nerve. Adrian found himself smirking slightly more so when both Steve and Leah comforted her in an attempt to calm her down.

It took a few moments before the warmth came back, Harriet kept her back to Adrian which he was somewhat happy about. He'd noticed the way that Steve held her wrist, his thumb rubbing circles on her inner wrist. Adrian rolled his eyes, love, disgusting.

It was Natasha who broke the silence between them. "You look human, what are you? You know aside from being a murder."

"Now the sudden personal interest." Adrian smirked. "My father was someone who your plant might be familiar with."

"Thor?"

"No," Adrian shot Leah a look. "Not that fool. Lucifer. My father was Lucifer Morgenstern."

Adrian didn't know if Thor was a fool, hell, he probably shouldn't be saying such a thing if he wanted to get tipped well by Odin, but that didn't matter. Or he tried to not let it matter all too well.

Steve didn't seem amused at all. In fact, it seemed as if he hated Adrian for making Harriet stressed more than anything. The thought that Steve cared so much about Harriet that it would make someone else find adorable, but Adrian just saw it as an opportunity for if things took a drastic turn. "So, you're telling me that your father is Lucifer? The demon?"

"Yes."

"You're joking, right?" Natasha asked.

"Of course I'm joking," Adrian spoke. "I don't know my species, only what I've been told. Or my parents. They died. All I know is to kill and hunt."

It was some form of a lie, he did know his species, in some aspects. It was just the case he didn't know who his father was. He knew that his mother was killed, his teachers and mentors would try and goat a reaction out of Adrian over such a thing. Not that Adrian cared that much, it was something that didn't matter to him. He was a demon, he knew that.

"You're screwing with us." Leah said.

"You'll never find out," Adrian spoke. "Though I will say, all that I am aware of is that I am part demon."

Kain and Jace had been stood within the Benatar, just under the cockpit. The rest of the Guardians were up there, observing or whatever. The pair of them went a few rounds before they eventually got ready for their trip on Krylo, Jace found it all amusing, like he'd finally had everything with Kain. The pair of them were standing side-by-side, Jace found himself staring at the table, lost in his thoughts about Kain, the faint thought of his mother, though what made Jace jump and let out a small yelp was when Kain hit his side.

"Ow!" Jace spoke as he rubbed his arm. "What was that for?"

"You know exactly what it's for," Kain responded. Kain narrowed his eyes at Jace with a small childish grin. "You were rough and its sore."

Jace grinned at that. "Sorry."

"And my throat hurts from trying to keep quiet, asshole," Kain added, shooting him a look.

Jace smiled as he wrapped his arms around Kain's waist, placing a kiss on his temple. "Didn't want anyone to complain again, plus when we land we'll be staying there for the night, meaning we can do what we want."

"You're not doing what you want," Gamora spoke as she came down the steps from the cockpit. "Or have you forgotten that Adrian Sanguis is after you, and there are countless other assassins that are after Kain. We have to keep an eye on the pair of you. So just don't even consider walking off again, the pair of you. We don't want a repeat."

Jace frowned slightly at the thought of not being able to do what he wanted. All that Jace wanted to do was spend some alone time with Kain, maybe look more into where his mother could've come from. He was sure that there were research places here that both him and Kain could go to. In truth, Jace had no idea what was on this planet, he'd only been here a handful of times but never fully explored, only using it as a pit stop.

"Oh, come on!" Jace playfully said. "Why can't me and Kain just walk around and be a normal couple? We haven't had this in a while and just because there are assassins after us doesn't mean that we're not going to be careful."

"Jace, no offence," Gamora spoke, "but you're a dumbass who forgot what Peter's name was last month."

Jace let out a dramatic gasp then pouted. "I know I'm a dumbass, but please can we have this? We'll be careful."

Gamora gave him a hard look and remained silent for a moment as if she was considering it. "Fine, but you'll have five hours after we land. If I find out that the pair of you decided to get involved in a fight, then I'll be tempted to allow the pair of you to die—or be the ones to kill you. Send up a flare if you run into trouble."

Both Jace and Kain stared at Gamora for a second before looking at each other. They both then splattered out a "yes," as they nodded. Gamora gave the pair of them a smile before leaving the pair, heading back up to the cockpit. Jace assumed that Gamora would tell Peter or the others about the agreement.

After a moment, Kain brought Jace's hand up to his lips and kissed Jace's knuckles. "I'm still not over any of this," Kain placed a hand around Jace's waist.

"I know," Jace grinned, giving Kain one little kiss.

Truth be told, Jace hadn't gotten over it one bit, he never thought that he'd get a second chance no matter how much he wanted to will it into existence. He never thought that he'd meet Kain off Xopheila, he'd always thought that he'd have to swoop in and pray that Kain would take him back. Though, to know that Kain was here—and probably knew more about what Jace could be—was something that brought Jace this sense of comfort, knowing that Kain was safe.

For the past five years, Jace felt as if he'd been in this void, like there was a void in his heart that longed for the one person that it craved to fill it. He thought that he'd have to live with that void for the rest of his life, he thought that he'd never get the chance to see Kain again even with the plan that he had, but now that he had Kain with him right now filled that void, giving him something to live for.

The way that he feels for Kain was—is—something that he could never truly explain to someone, it was like this intense and constant wave that hit him over and over again, suffocating him. Sometimes it engulfed him to the point where he found peace in it, as if he wanted to be embraced by such comfort. Without it, Jace felt lost, he'd felt completely lost without the one person that filled him with a sense of peace and comfort. These past five years, Jace's heart has done nothing but reach out for Kain, searching through the dark for something that wouldn't come.

To have Kain so close to him now made Jace feel as if none of this was real, as if he was living in some fantasy world where love like this seems fictional. He knew that it was stupid, he knew that it sounded weird, but every night for as long as he's known Kain, its like a part of his heart finally felt content with this life.

"We've landed!" Peter's voice called out. It was enough to make Jace snap out of his thoughts.

"Have you ever been here?" Kain questioned, looking at Jace.

Jace's eyebrows knitted together. "A few times but I've only ever stayed in one place. I've never fully explored."

Kain's features lit up with excitement. "Well, lucky for you, I know this planet well, it was one of the many planets that I worked on, I know exactly where to go!"
