3: Trial and Error

The Multiverse is not endless. It has a limited space. That space starts out small, but grows with time. It can only hold so much. AUs can grow, too, and they can grow too much and touch if they are too close. This will cause a chain reacting that will destroy the Multiverse. There is a delicate balance to be kept.

Fate's explanation to Genesis is full of more annoyance and disdain than that, but it got the point across. Genesis feels so overwhelmed with how complicated all the rules are. If he creates too slow, many monsters will suffer the genocide routes. Too fast, and the Multiverse will crumble. Genesis has no way to tell when he's nearing that limit. It seems awfully unfair. Two Multiverses have already fallen in so little time. Genesis wants nothing more than to curl up and continue feeling miserable for himself, but he doesn't want to keep making mistakes that cost lives.

With more care than the last, Genesis takes his time to create just one new AU. He then sits down in the empty void to watch both of the worlds for a while. The weight of the responsibility that's been placed upon the young Creator is a heavy toll for him to carry. The cost of mistakes doesn't feel like something he can shoulder. Dwelling on all the lost lives threatens to destroy him. Instead, Genesis tries to block out his thoughts and pay attention to is new AU.

This word isn't too different from the original Undertale. The biggest thing that Genesis changed is how magical combat works. Monsters still use magic, but they use it in conjunction with a physical weapon that reaches its full potential when filled with magic. Genesis is rather proud of how it turned out. His attention keeps drying back to the spear that he created for Undyne. It's a beautiful piece with a spear point on each end. Undyne's magic compliments it well and lights the entire weapon in a burning magic equal to her own fiery passion.

Genesis likes the weapon so much that he wants one of his own. Like an easily distracted child, the interesting object steals all his focus. Genesis has the power to create entire worlds. He reasons that he must be able to create simple objects. The power to create worlds and push them out into the Multiverse comes easily. Creating something in the void is a little harder for him to grasp. While Genesis is indeed powerful, it takes great strength to create something in a place whose very nature is to be empty. Fate did it with ease when she created Genesis, but he struggles with the task.

A squiggly shape forms in Genesis's hands only for the construct to deteriorate. It falls apart and drips through his fingers. The floor and Genesis's shoes are stained in a dark and oily substance. Genesis slides it around on his fingers and watches more of it drip onto the floor. What is this stuff? It was produced by Genesis's magic, but this is nothing close to what he was trying to make. This strange substance is the result of Genesis's lack of concentration. It doesn't have a name, and Genesis doesn't know how to describe what it actually is, so he decides to just call it ink.

Genesis is soon covered in ink. It has stained the floor all around him and continues to spread outwards. Despite the soaked weight of his clothes, he can't help but grinning like a fool. Genesis finally has something solid in his hands. The spear is a little warped, and some details are wrong, but the Creator couldn't be happier. All the empty space around him suddenly doesn't seem as daunting. He has the power to fill it up and and make it just as pretty as the AUs.

Excited to see what else he can do, Genesis lurches up to to his feet with the spear still clenched in his hands. He then promptly slips on all the spilled ink. Genesis's left foot flies out from underneath him. He looses his balance and falls. Genesis braces to his the ground, but the floor gives way with a sickening squelch. He slips through the floor as if it were a viscous slime. Genesis inhales in shock and gags when it gets into his mouth. After only a minute that feels like an eternity, Genesis falls through the ink and out the other side. He rolls over and spits out the ink he got it in his mouth. It tastes awful; it doesn't taste like what he imagines regular ink would taste like.

It takes a few moments for Genesis to regain his composure. When he finally looks around, he freezes in surprise. The empty void has been replaced with dark evergreen trees and a snowy landscape. Genesis takes in his surroundings like a drunk takes in liquor. The simple scene is stunning to him. The fact that he's here, in Undertale, is even more incredible. Genesis is half-buried in the snow with a black puddle just to the side of him. He sits up on his knees and finds the warped spear nearby. Genesis grabs it and stands up.

If his memory is correct, Genesis isn't too far from the main path through Snowdin's forest. Excitement buzzes through him like lightening. Genesis stumbles through the thick snow. It's more difficult to walk through than he thought it would be. The pine trees quickly thin out and give way to a packed down path. Genesis comes out of the trees just a dozen yards away from a little wooden shack. A skeleton monster is slumped over the counter. Genesis dashes over, practically vibrating with joy. Genesis has talked to absolutely no one but Fate. He has never learned the do's and don't's of social interaction. Genesis sees nothing wrong with walking right up to a sleeping, oblivious monster who has an eerily similar face to his own.

"Sans! Hey!" Genesis practically shouts it once he's in front of Sans.

Sans startles so badly that he jerks up and hits his head on the roof of the shack. His eyes are wide and confused when he sees Genesis's too-happy expression. "Wha-"

"Oh! So you don't know me but I know who you are and this is the first time I was able to leave the void but I'm not even sure how I was able to do that-," Genesis is rambling on at an alarmingly fast rate, vomiting up words even before they appear in his head. "But I'm just excited to be in Undertale! I've been watching you and your brother and the resets and-,"

"Who are you!?" Sans finally interrupts.

Genesis pauses for a moment as he registers the question. "My name is Genesis," he says, just a little calmer. "I think to think of myself more as a Balance Keeper, but I'm called the Creator by Fate!"

The name has barely left his mouth when the world cracks. Undertale splinters around him and Genesis hears Sans shout before the Creator is ripped out of the AU. Genesis learned another rule that day: Fate doesn't like regular monsters knowing of her existence.

Another Multiverse has fallen. The loss punches another hole right through Genesis's heart. He creates a single AU before collapsing and curling up on the floor. He lets the failure sweep over himself. Genesis does not get up for a long time. In a separate space, a separate void, a black boned skeleton does the same as he finally gives up on getting out and lets the emptiness break him.
