Chapter 10
The light clicked on.
Tamao started slamming his body against the glass of his cage. Crack, crack, crack.
Suddenly, the glass broke, and the door opened. With adrenaline coursing through Tamao, he ran off to find his sister. The scientist ran up to Tamao and grabbed him right as Tamao reached Sakura's cage. Sakura, now awake, started ramming against the glass as Tamao bit the scientist as hard as he could, which caused him to be dropped.
Tamao threw himself at the glass of Sakura's cage, and it broke, glass pierced both Tamao and Sakura's manes as they ran. "Quick attack to speed up!" Tamao shouted running towards the open door.
Tamao had no doubt that Sakura listened to him as they ran towards the door. Scientists chased Tamao and Sakura, doubt trickled into Tamao's mind as he started to fear that they might not make it out. He encountered the training room and ran in, running at a closed door, the only door he knew that led to freedom.
The door didn't open, and scientists swarmed the room. An alarm was now blaring, causing Tamao to feel disoriented and for Sakura to cover her ears, shaking. Tamao grabbed Sakura and started running as the scientists tried to corner them.
Tamao was not accepting this to be fate, not when he's so close! When he saw that the entrance to the room was open, he ran out and started running around the lab, running down halls and corridors, his claws clicking against the marble floor. He felt like he was going to slip, especially since he was carrying an eevee larger than him.
He needed to be strong though, one wrong move and it was over, their only chance at freedom would be taken away from them. Tamao ran down another corridor, boltund chasing them. It seemed as though the scientists were using boltund to chase them down and catch them, which was bad news for the two eevee.
"Sakura, imma need you to run, okay? I can't carry you!" Tamao exclaimed. Sakura whimpered, terrified, yet squirmed free and ran with Tamao. It was clear the alarms were something that Sakura didn't like.
The walls all looked the same as Tamao's tag flew off. He spotted an open vent and jumped in, Sakura following him. The two eevee crept further into the vent, preventing any boltund from crawling in and stopping them. "We need to get out." Sakura mumbled.
The alarms were quieter now, as Tamao nodded. He started following his gut feeling and wandering around the vents, creating loud creaks and groans, protests from the vent.
He looked back, making sure Sakura was following him. To Tamao's relief, Sakura was. So far, the plan was going good.
It seemed as though they actually had a chance!
Tamao led Sakura around. With how many turns the vent had, it felt like they were going in circles. Occasionally, there was another vent they could open and crawl out of, but never close enough to an exit.
Tamao's plan was to go to the vent in the training room.
"Are you alright?" Sakura asked Tamao. Tamao hadn't noticed it, but the wounds from the glass were bleeding. "I'm fine, how about you?" Tamao asked, wanting to make sure his sister was doing alright. Sakura nodded, and Tamao sighed a breath of relief.
They kept crawling through the vent, hoping they'd run into their vent of choice. "I feel sore, can we take a break? You seem like you also need one." Sakura asked.
Tamao nodded and stopped moving, getting more comfortable with Sakura as they took a break.
He hadn't realized how much he needed this. He was grateful to be looking out for Sakura, and for her to be looking out for him. It might've been a bad idea to take a break in the vent though, as there would be no room to stretch.
The vent was starting to get to Tamao as well, he didn't like the feeling of being confined. It felt like the space was closing in, which caused Tamao to get up immediately. "S-sorry Sakura, but we need to keep going. We're so close!" Tamao smiled.
Sakura nodded and started crawling with Tamao to the next vent opening. Tamao peered into the room, and kept walking, not wanting to be trapped in a room with more scientists. They kept crawling, being careful not to let the vent creak or groan.
Letting out a quiet breath of relief, Tamao led his sister further and further in the vent, his pace being picked up due to wanting to get out of the vent.
As they kept crawling, Tamao felt worse. He felt as though he was pushing his sister too much, all for what he wanted. "Do you want to take a break?" Tamao asked. Sakura shook her head. "N- no, lets keep going. The sooner we get out, the sooner we can rest and have fun! The sooner we can see the world! We will get out, we just need to have hope!" Sakura encouraged.
Tamao nodded and led his sister further, eventually seeing the room they needed to get into.
The training room was empty, both doors were closed. Tamao sighed and broke open the vent, falling down into the room. It hurt, but he didn't care. "It'll hurt! Careful!" He quietly called up to his sister. Sakura nodded, and Tamao watched as she jumped down.
"How do we open the door?" Sakura asked, looking at it. It wasn't a door handle they'd be able to easily open, which was bad. "We could push it?" Tamao suggested, using Quick Attack on the door.
It held no use though, and only hurt Tamao. "Ow..." He mumbled. He took off Sakura's tag since he noticed it was still on her, then he looked back at the door. Sakura hummed and did the same thing. "Owie! Okay, that hurt." She confirmed.
The two giggled but were quick to look at the door. They could hear the entrance creak open despite the alarms still blaring. Tamao looked at the door, and panicked, trying to push the door to freedom open, however he was pushed back.
The door was opened, and this led for a perfect escape, so Tamao and Sakura pushed their luck, and ran into the bright outdoors.
Freedom at last!
