Chapter Twenty-Three
Now that the five of them are together, other monsters are weary to get close. There was no back-up plan for if the bad guys managed to regroup. The occasional long-ranged attack is fired at them, but Soul uses his borrowed magic to create walls of bones to defend them. The action is quickly tiring him out even further.
"This is crazy. Ink has never organized an attack of this scale before," Cross huffs. He knocks a bone attack out of the air with his sword when Soul is a little too slow.
"Dust's hurt. Bad," Horror says gruffly. He tried his best to defend both of them when Dust went down, but Horror was hopelessly outnumbered.
"Are you okay, Boss?" Killer asks skeptically, looking Nightmare's half-corrupted form up and down.
"What should we do now, Nightmare? We can't keep-" Cross is quickly interrupted.
"Let me think!" Soul snaps. His head is a jumbled mess of thought and rouge emotion. Soul isn't going to able to keep Nightmare standing for much longer, but Soul won't leave without finding Error. The situation is bad. The bad Sanses can't fight any more. Soul promised Nightmare that he would save them all. "Hold this."
"What?" Horror stumbles when Dust is dumped into his arms. Horror can't fight when carrying someone! He has to be careful just to keep the head of his axe away from from Dust.
"Cross, do you have enough magic to make a portal?" Soul asks quickly.
"I do, but just once," Cross admits. He doesn't like being seen as weak. Cross jumps a bit when he realizes that there's something weird about that question. "Wait, Nightmare, Are you saying that you can't portal?"
"Nightmare isn't home right now," Soul finally admits. He bats away an attack and winces when it stings his long tendril. Why does Nightmare have to have nerves in these things?
The three of them stare at Soul in confusion. It takes a moment to connect the dots in the best of battle, and Horror is actually the one to say it. "Soul?" He asks.
"Don't freak out," Soul says quickly. He's distracted by keeping an eye on the battlefield and looking for Error. There's a light tremor in his body now that makes his elongated limbs shake. "Nightmare asked me to help after he was knocked unconscious."
"....... What are you going to have us do?" Cross asks, obviously a little uneasy. He was still himself when Soul hitched a ride, but it seems Nightmare is not so lucky.
"You guys aren't doing anything. I told Nightmare that'd I'd get you all to safety." Soul's attention snaps upwards. "Killer! Shoot down that Gaster Blaster." To pull this off, Soul has decided that he must be faster. The bad Sanses don't need to be here for the plan that Soul is concocting.
Killer reacts quickly despite the situation. He fires an attack off at a Gaster Blaster that had gotten too close. The monster riding on top of it is shocked as their ride disintegrates. The Undertone Sans plummets towards the ground before teleporting to safety. Tone wasn't paying attention in his panic and teleports way too close to the scary monsters. He squeaks as he's grabbed by a long tentacle. Tone was not supposed to be a part of this battle. He was only there to watch from a high advantage point and report what he saw. Tone wouldn't have come at all if his friend Ink hadn't asked Tone specifically.
Nightmare finally succumbs to exhaustion and collapses as Soul switches body. Cross grabs Nightmare before he hits his head on the ground. Thanks to spending so much time listening to Soul's wild stories, it's obvious to the others that Soul just switched bodies.
Tone really wants to go home. Soul tries his best to shake off that fearful thought as he jumps to his feet. Tone's magic is jittery as Soul calls on it, creating a dome of music notes around the group that counteracts any attacks fired their way. "Cross! Open the por-portal now and get out of here." Soul tries to raise his voice, but it cracks halfway through. Tone really wants his brother. This is scary.
"What about you and Error? Ink will-" Cross's protests are quickly interrupted.
"Dust and Nightmare need medical attention," Soul shouts, managing to get the upper hand on Tone's shy demeanor.
Cross wants to argue more, but Soul is right. Nightmare and Dust can't stay here. Soul has the best chance of finding Error with the the least resistance. Soul can become anyone and use the confusion to disappear into the chaos. "Don't get yourself killed," Cross says reluctantly.
Soul fends off more attacks with music notes as Cross opens a portal. Horror dashes in with Dust right before Killer and Cross drag Nightmare through. The portal closes, and just like that, Soul has fulfilled his promise. He nods resolutely and lets the music notes drop. Now it's time to save his best friend.
If there's one thing surprising about Tone, it's his speed. Tone is quick on his feet and very strategic despite his meek demeanor. He is still the judge of his AU and has the combat experience to match. Soul takes advantage of all these skills has he jumps into action.
The other monster aren't stupid. They just watched Nightmare grab Tone and the collapse. Tone turned around right after and started helping the bad Sanses. With Soul's introduction to the Multiverse in mind, there is no way that Soul can hide his presence any longer. That particular problem doesn't concern Soul. He's done trying to hide.
Soul summons a Gaster Blaster and jumps on top of it before soaring into the air. He instantly becomes an easy target for the few that are determined enough to go after him. It's a risk that Soul is willing to take. He needs a better view of the battlefield. Soul scans the ground and quickly spots Error. He and Ink are off alone on one side of the field. Their battle is fierce enough to deter anyone from coming near. The two move so fast that Soul has a hard time following their movements. Soul needs to get closer and-
The Gaster Blaster beneath him shatters. Soul shouts as he's dropped into open air. He panics as he falls, too startled for a moment to remember that he can teleport. Soul drops past another Gaster Blaster and finally gets a hold of his magic. He teleports to the nearest surface: right next to the monster riding their Blaster.
"What-"
"Sorry!" Soul grabs them by the forearm. The jump is disorienting, and Soul almost loses control of the Gaster Blaster. He grabs Tone by the collar of his shirt to keep him from falling to the ground. The memories try to flood in, but Soul shoves it alway. The Gaster Blaster drops in altitude and moves to zip over the ground. Soul pushes for speed and tries to reach Error as quickly. The solid surface beneath him explodes. A lucky attack hit the Blaster.
Soul hits the ground before he can react. The air is knocked out of him, and Soul feels a sharp pain in his head. He scrambles back up and looks around for Tone. The unconscious monster is lying a few feet away, definitely bruised, but otherwise fine. Soul lifts up one hand to touch the painful spot on his head. Soul's hand comes away red. That can't be good. Soul jumps to his feet and tries not to fall back over. The shallow crack in his skull is making his building headache worse. No matter what, Soul can't stop now. There's only a dozen yards between him and the large area where Error and Ink are fighting. There are also about a dozen other Sanses closing in on him.
Still a little unsteady, Soul summons a pair of long bones and holds them in front of himself like swords. Just because he's not currently a Swap Sans doesn't mean he's forgotten how to fight like one. Soul uses one bone to parry an attack and then sweeps the legs out from under another monster. Air rushes behind him, and Soul whirls around just in time to block another attack. Fighting like this is useless. Soul doesn't have time to waste over meaningless battles. If he doesn't move soon, he'll get over whelmed as more monsters arrive at the scene. Soul dissolves the two bones that he's been fighting with.
A bone attack comes flying right at Soul's face. He ducks and sidesteps underneath it with all the grace of a DanceTale Sans. Soul the straightens back up and charges his attacker like a Sans from RevolutionTale. The other monster's eyes widen is surprise as Soul slams into them. The impact makes Soul stagger, but he pushes the new memories away and races forwards. He jumped bodies again. Soul doesn't have to fight all these monsters if he can just go through them.
The growing pain in his head and body is distracting. Soul dodges another attack and jumps bodies again. He won't be able to do too many more before he becomes overwhelmed, but each jump saves a few seconds in moving a little closer to Error. The next monster to get too close receives a mean right hook that cracks Soul's knuckles. He learned how to throw a punch from MobTale.
Soul has to fight through a few more monsters, but after switching hosts one more time, he finds himself on the edge of the area where Error and Ink have been battling. The two God's battles are quite destructive. They need lots of room to use their stronger attack. Monsters with common sense know to stay well away. Soul isn't bothering to listen to something so silly.
Error looks terrible. He has many new injuries that are beginning to slow and hinder him. With the fierce fight, Error has yet to realize that Nightmare and his crew have escaped the AU. He's still fighting hard to hold Ink's focus. Error still hesitates to land some attacks, but Soul can see that Ink sports a few minor injuries.
Soul charges through the disturbed terrain. Stray bone attacks, taunt strings, and puddles of acidic paint make the ground dangerous. Error and Ink have progressed to fighting atop a combination of strings and newly created platforms that hover in the air. Soul has to be careful in order to pull this off. Error and Ink are too preoccupied with each other to bother paying attention to other monsters around them. Soul watches them battle back and forth, scanning the fight. Neither of the two stay in one spot for very long.
When Ink jumps back to dodge an attack, he aims to let himself fall onto a lower platform. Soul acts immediately. He teleports onto the platform right as Ink lands. The Creator is surprised and stumbles to the platforms edge. Soul lunges forward to grab him.
"I got you!" Souls cackles. Both monsters immediately fall unconscious, and Ink tumbles off the platform.
