Chapter 15: First Attempt At Murder

Day followed day and night followed night. Until Rey couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't bear his presence, knowing what he was capable of. She should have acted earlier, the plan of her lifetime should have been done by now.

It was not the way she had imagined doing it, but now she had no ther choice. She knew what was fair and what was not, and back then, she had imagined herself doing it the fair way. But now the dirty one was the only solution they have left her. And she didn't regret what she was going to do. For she wasn't only saving herself, she was saving the Seven Kingdoms too.

Rey had endured all for the queen's sake, but one night, she gathered her strength and went for the Maester's chambers.

She had no blacks, but she draped a dark cloak from Ben's wardrobe over her long, light-colored nightgown. She had administered him milk of the poppy after they ate, to make him fall into a deep sleep and not notice her sneaking out of the room.

She had left her boots under the bed. A smart girl walks barefoot, she heard her master saying in her mind.

It was the middle of the night, and there was no movement in the castle. On the corridor that led to the stairs there was only one torch left to lighten it, and Rey had to draw her eyes out to see something in that deep darkness.

Good that she was barefoot and she did not make too much a noise when she stumbled.

She followed the spiraled stairs down to the floor, and took another corridor that went along the kitchen.
In the short time she had got to spend at the castle, she had learned it all. In the first two days, she knew every chamber, every corridor, every tower and every corner of the crypts. She had nothing more important to do, so she found things to fill up her time, and stay as far from Ben as possible. The provocation to steal a knife from the kitchen and stick it through him was too big.

The chamber where the Maester held his potions was down under the castle. Here, it was pitch dark, and Rey had to place her hands on the stone walls to guide her steps down the staircase.

But her reflexes never betrayed her. Even though she had never learned to fight blindfolded as the Faceless Men did. Yet she still hoped that one day she would.

There was a small light at the end of the steps that told her she had reached the Maester's chamber.

She pushed the door lightly, as if too afraid she might wake up the shadows of the night. Queer, though, that the door was not locked.

Rey stepped inside, timidly at first, and marveled at the multitude of bottles that glowed in the thin moonlight that protruded through the small gap at the top of the wall. Her eyes have now adjusted to the darkness, and she could almost see perfectly.

Her paces drove her through the stales, deeper and deeper into the chamber. She reached up with a hand to touch one glass with a glowing blue liquid in it.

But it was not what she sought. Still, whatever the poison was, she had to be gone by the dawn. When they would find Ben dead, they would split his body apart and find that it was poison that had killed him. And who else was with him at the time of the murder, if not her?

And she spotted it... Glowing translucent poison in a thick, round bottle, with a thin neck. The Tears of Lys, they called it. A rare and expensive thing, sweet and clear as water.

She took it with deft hands, threw two glances back and forth to make sure no one had followed her steps, and hid it in the folds of her nightgown. She had heard well that The Red Keep was more alive than a  forest, all around ears to know your every step.

As she returned to their room, she saw Ben sleeping quietly on the couch where he used to, his head nestled on a pillow. He looked as if he was finally having a good rest after days of agitation, even though he was far too large for the small couch he was sleeping in. It is exhausting him, she thought. Yet he didn't once give a sign that he would come to sleep in the feather bed with her. Because he knew just how much she hated that.

Some hairs have even fallen on his face, and his steady breath made them flip in the air and back on his skin.
She approached him with careful paces, as not to make a sound, not even by mistake.

There was a nightstand next to the foot of the couch, where a goblet of water had been set. She slid the glass bottle that contained the translucent liquid from the folds of her gown, and opened it.

But as she approached the flagon to the goblet, she found it was far more difficult than she would have ever imagined it would be.

She forced her eyes to stay averted from him. She thought that if she would see his face, her heart will fill with pity, and self blame. But she couldn't resist, and her eyes landed directly on his sleeping face. He seemed at ease now. And it was the first time she watched him sleep. And maybe the last, too. She watched his chest rising and falling slowly, and his features were gentler than she had ever seen them. But she knew what she had to do. She could not let some foolish thoughts cloud her wits.

It would only take three drops of poison. Three drops, and the realm would be saved from a tyrant. Three drops, and she would be free.

   But she couldn't do it.

Her hand trembled as it held the flagon, and, not even realizing it, tears began to form in her eyes.

    She couldn't kill him.

His life was not hers to end. And somewhere deep in her heart she knew that the gods were not done with him yet.

And instead, she slid the bottle back inside her gown. But before she stood up, her fingers brushed some hairs that had fallen in his face. She had no idea what had gotten into her head. But then, something odd pulled at her chest. She woke up in time when she was on her way to kiss him on the forehead. Startled, she drew back.

   "Good night." She whispered. "Ben..."

This scene was not originally in the script, but this idea came to my mind and I thought it would add a bit more suspense to the story!:D xd
I just thought things were going too smoothly, so I had to do something about it=))
