Chapter 3
Peeling my eyes open as the soft morning light hit them, I had a large coat over me from the look of it, it was Thorin's. Standing sluggishly, folding the coat and stumbling over to my pony Chandler who was tied to the fence. Pulling out an apple from the satchel attached to the saddle, and feeding it to him, the green door to the quiet hobbit hole swung open and out walked the thirteen dwarves.
"Sleep well lass" Dwalin asked, rubbing his eyes from sleep. "Good enough, yourself" I questioned, tightening Chandler's saddle "My necks got a kink in it, I think I slept on it funny" He grumbles rubbing his neck
I chuckle standing up, "Let me have a look at it" I say turning him around and began to massage his neck, hearing a soft click I knew I had gotten the spot
"Better?" I ask stepping away and looking at him moving his neck around, "Much, thanks lass" He said with an appreciative smile before turning walking to his pony
Turning back to Chandler I notice Thorin standing beside him, petting him "You still have him" He says, his voice thick with sleep "Of course" I say walking over to Chandler stroking his mane, feeling eyes on me I look up to see him looking at me
"What?" I question
"You're still as beautiful as I last saw you" He reached out and placed his rough hand against my face stroking it softly, my face grew red at this
"Thorin I think we should go, the hobbit's not coming" Dwalin called, tearing Thorin gaze away from mine, "Alright, time to head out" Thorin's voice called to everyone in the company, he took one last look at me before turning to his pony
Mounting Chandler, I follow along near the back of the company. "So you and my uncle huh" Kili's voice asked from behind me on his own pony, turning slightly in the saddle to look at the young Oakenshield, with his older brother beside him snickering "What do you mean?" I question, trying to fight the blood rushing to my cheeks,
"Oh you know the lovey dovey eyes, this morning" Fili joked, Kili accompanying that with a kissy face, rolling my eyes at the two "Well, we were engaged" I say, the duo's eyes widened
"You didn't know?" I questioned, they both shook their heads "Nobody liked talking of you, must've been too painful" Fili spoke up, letting out a light sigh nodding in agreement
"So do you think the hobbit is going to come" I question out loud to everyone, "Of course not, he'd rather stay home and talk about doilies" Dwalin laughed from upfront,
"Alright a bet then" I say, "I bet twenty gold that he shows" I call out to Dwalin, he turned in his seat and smirk "You got yourself a deal there lass" Soon everyone is making bets
Not soon later a voice can be heard from a "Wait! Wait!" It was Mr Baggins, I pull on Chandler reins to stop, turning around in my saddle I see the young hobbit running to catch up, once he reaches the company he hands Balin the contract. "I signed it!" he says cheerfully, hands on his sides trying to catch his breath
Balin takes the contract and inspects it with a pocket glass. He then smiles at Mr Baggins "Everything appears to be in order. Welcome, Master Baggins, to the company of Thorin Oakenshield." Balin says once everything was in order. I gave a small cheer along with the other dwarves, "Give him a pony." Thorin orders, kicking his pony into a walk
"No, no, no, no, that...that won't be necessary, thank you, but I'm sure I can keep up on foot. I I've done my fair share of walking holidays, you know. I even got as far as Frogmorton once WAGH!" Bilbo's speech is cut off as Kili and Fili ride alongside him and pick him up from behind to put him on a pony.
Laughing at his facial features, "Mr Baggins the pony will not bite you" I say from beside him, Mr Baggins is riding a pony and looking quite terrified. The pony neighs and tosses its head, making him quite uncomfortable; I laugh again kicking Chandler softly urging him forward to catch up with Fili and Kili
"Come on Dwalin pay up" I call to the dwarf from the front, hearing him grumble about how he shouldn't bet against me before throwing a bag of coins at me, soon sacks of money begin passing between the dwarves
"No, no, wait, wait, stop! Stop! We have to turn around." The entire company comes to a halt, and the dwarves start objecting and asking what the problem is "What on earth is the matter?" Gandalf questioned the small hobbit; I myself would like to know as well "I forgot my handkerchief." He cried out
The tearing of cloth coming from someone's clothing could be heard "Here! Use this." Bofur's voice said, must have been his clothing, I chuckle imagining Bilbo's disgusted face "Move on." Thorin called, and the company began to move again
۞۞۞۞۞
The company has camped for the night near the edge of a cliff. It was quite serine actually, most of the dwarves were asleep; Gandalf, Fili, and Kili are awake. Which means it isn't very quiet; the two brothers were sitting either side of me, not talking just sitting
A loud scream pierced the air, an orc night raid flinching I stood, walking towards the edge of the cliff where the ponies were kept "What was that?" Mr Baggins' voice asked from behind me, "Orcs" Kili answered, another scream I clenched my hand on the hilt of my sword scanning the area in front of me
"Throat cutters, there'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them." Fili says "They strike in the wee small hours, when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet; No screams, just lots of blood." Kili finishes, they then began to laugh. Did they not know of how much death orcs caused?
"You think that's funny? You think a night raid by orcs is a joke because it isn't anything of the sorts" I growl turning around and glare at the two young dwarves, "We didn't mean anything by it." Kili mumbled hanging his head
"No, you didn't. You know nothing of the world." Thorin growled, glaring at his nephews before walking over to where I stood
Thorin placed a hand on my shoulder, in which I laid my hand on his, "Don't mind them, laddie. They have more cause than most to hate orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first." Balin's voice spoke to Kili, I flinched at the memory of that fateful day
Flash Back
Thousand of dwarves and orcs fight in front of the gates of Moria. There at the front were Thorin, Thror, Thrain, Balin, Dwalin and I fighting fiercely. And for what we were fighting towards was a massive, pale, orc who was wiping out many dwarves with his mace, and then engages King Thror.
"Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs lead by the most vile of their entire race: Azog, the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin. He began by beheading the King."
Azog, having defeated King Thror, holds up his beheaded head as he roars in triumph; I head, comes flying towards us landing on the bloodied battlefield it bounces and rolls to Thorin and I's feet. Thorin screamed from beside me, in horror at the fallen King
"Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner or killed, we did not know. We were leaderless. Defeat and death were upon us."
Orcs have overpowered us, many of my fellow dwarves ere turning and fleeing for their lives.
"That is when I saw them: a young dwarf prince and his lover facing down the Pale Orc."
Thorin was facing Azog; My swords clashing with any orc close enough to interfere with Thorin's battle, I turn to see what was happening only to see Azog swinging his mace knocking away first Thorin's shield, then his sword. Thorin falls down an embankment and lands on the ground."Thorin" I scream rushing forward only to be hit with the Pale orcs mace, being thrown a few feet away, landing roughly on the ground.
"He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armour rent...wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield"
I watched helplessly as Azog leaped and to smash Thorin, but Thorin, grabbing an oaken branch lying on the round, managed roll away in time. Azog continues wielding his mace against Thorin, who is still on the ground, but Thorin blocked with the oaken branch, which he uses as a shield. As Azog swings one last time, Thorin, grabbing a sword lying nearby, swinging upwards and cuts off Azog's left arm, his mace arm, from below the elbow. Azog clutches the stump of his arm as he howls in pain.
"Azog, the Defiler, learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken."
Azog is rushed into Moria by other orcs; Still screaming in pain Thorin, yelling "Du Bekâr! Du Bekâr!" rallying the dwarves, they stop fleeing and return to battle, fighting ferociously. The dwarves now seem to have the advantage, I watched as our forces fought bravely against the orcs
I stood, my legs nearly giving way as I went to walk forward. Only to be faced with a grotesque face of an orc. With a powerful swing of its bloodied mace I was sent flying, landing a few feet away coughing up blood, my vision blurring as the battle around me rage, as I stumbled away from the battle
Once reaching the tree line, collapsing onto the ground
"Our forces rallied and drove the orcs back. Our enemy had been defeated. But there was no feast; no song that night, for our dead was beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And our princess, the one to fight alongside Thorin had disappeared"
The battlefield was covered in the corpses of dwarves and orcs; I watched from the tree line as the surviving dwarves wept with one another over their loss. I watched as Balin and Dwalin hug and put their foreheads together.
I watched as Thorin, holding the Oakenshield branch, searched the battle field for me. I watched as he screamed in rage and sadness when he could not find me, my own tears poured down my face I should be there, is should be standing beside him reassuring him I was there for him.
But I was not, I had failed him, I was supposed to stand by his side and fight with him, but I had ran, ran away from the fight. He would think of me as a coward, I could not face him
"And I thought to myself then, there is one who I could follow. There is one I could call King. Though he did not have his Queen, I knew that he would be strong"
Flash Back End
Thorin turns away from the view beyond the cliff; I knew it was about me leaving the battlefield about him thinking I was dead; I turn slightly seeing the entire Company is awake and standing in awe, staring at him. Thorin walked between them toward the fire, "But the pale orc? What happened to him?"Mr Baggins questioned
"He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago." Thorin spat with hate, talking about the orc that killed his grandfather, "And the girl? What happened to her?" Bilbo questioned curiously, I watched as Thorin's back tensed and many of the company lowered their gazes to the ground
"She ran off" I spoke up softly looking at Bilbo, he opened to ask another question but another howl from the filthy wargs in the distances cut him off
