Chapter 4
It was finally the day I'd be flying to America. Nani hadn't left my side since yesterday, she hadn't stopped crying since yesterday.
"I'll call you everyday" I told her "I know but who will give me massage no one here can do it as good as you" I smiled pulling her in for another hug.
Our flight got called "you better call as soon as you land okay?" I nodded "of course" it took everything in me to walk away and leave her with her yelling out threats to smack me if I didn't call.
I had never had a grandmother before, and she treated me as if I was her own flesh and blood. Never mind grandparents I only have one half of my parents, correction I had one half of my parents, am I an orphan now? Dumb Amara, your living parent needs to be dead for you to be an orphan and damn is my mother hard to kill.
"I've never been on a plane before well I have just not with this many people on it" I told Amir who was sat to my left taking the window seat, on my right was a woman who looked to be in her early 20s.
It was as if she could sense my nerves "hey you'll be alright" I smiled at her reassurance "thank you, I'm Amara" she shook my hand "I'm Haleema it's nice to meet you" the flight began to take off and 19 hours later we had finally arrived.
The plane ride was quite eventful, considering I watched a divorce happen mid journey after a cheating scandal was brought up. The rest of the journey was spent talking to haleema about things in general.
"Hey wake up we're here" my hands began to sweat as I nervously began to wipe them on my jeans.
We made it off the plane and we're looking for our bags at the baggage claim.
"Are you nervous?" He asked as I sat on the trolley. "You could say that, the nerves might just be my hunger" she shrugged as he laughed "again? Mari we ate 10 minutes ago!" Her eyes spotted the red piece of fabric tied to the suitcase "found them!" Amir grabbed the bags and made their way down the escalator.
There stood a man with red hair that was fading into a soft gray, stood beside him was a girl a couple of years older than me with matching red hair, they held a sign which read 'Amara' on it. I recognized the man from the picture 'Jim' she thought to herself and she could see the resemblance the older girl had to the younger one in the photo.
"Well it looks like this is it for us" Amir smiled sadly at the girl. "Yeah I guess it is" she frowned, he gave her a hug "here's my number and my address if you ever need anything just give me a call" Amara pocketed the small piece of paper hugging him once again.
"Thanks for everything" she pulled away giving him a final look before they parted ways.
"Hey you must be Jim" she sent a polite smile to the older man "Amara! It's great to see you! This is my daughter Barbara" he introduced.
"Hi" the red head smiled at her "let's get going shall we it's a long drive back" they were now sat in the car as Amara looked out the window intrigued by how modern everything here was.
Spending her entire life in the mountains made her quite sheltered to what the outside world looked like.
"So how exactly do you know my mom?" She asked Jim who looked at her through the mirror.
"Well I uh... we're old friends" he responded his eyes straying from the road ahead to look at me briefly as if he wanted to ask something but didn't know how.
"Go on" I urged "pardon?" I rolled my eyes "you clearly want to ask something so spit it out" he looked like he was fighting himself before he asked "where is Nadia?" My eyes widened, I didn't think he'd actually ask.
"She's uh... preoccupied" I replied vaguely, how am I supposed to say 'last I saw her she was being buried in a pile by assassins and that I might be an orphan now'.
"Your mom just left a 12 yr old on her own?" the redhead, Barbara retorted "hey! She didn't want to and besides she's coming back for me" I told her.
"Where have I heard that before?" She rolled her eyes sarcastically. "Listen carrot top, my mom is nothing like yours, when she makes a promise she keeps it, she's coming back for me" I snapped at her.
"Amara! Barbara! That's enough the both of you" Jim scolded the girls "I'm sorry, I realize I went too far with the mother thing, I don't like it when people insult her" she offered an apologetic smile to the older girl.
"You're fine, we're gonna have to get used to each other if you're going to be living with us" not long after they arrived at the Gordon's apartment building. "By the way I'm 14 now.."
Amara walked into her shared room, everything had been pulled to one side, everything dull and white, while Barbara's side of the room was filled with vibrant colours and posters.
"Dear god, what the hell have I got myself into?" She stared in disbelief at the dolls and pink.
Amara had spent the day observing the family of 2, she had concluded that the Jim was often preoccupied with work since he left not even an hour within her arrival in their home. She had yet to decide how to feel about Barbara, It was later that night when the two were getting ready for bed did her suspicions of Barbara get to her.
