"No, no, don't run!" I warned Alice as we approached my office. She, of course, ignored me and rushed into the building, a wide grin on her face.
I rubbed my temple and reluctantly followed her inside, trying my best to prepare myself mentally for the day.
"Alice Chase, is that you?" the usually grumpy receptionist asked as Alice rushed into her sight. Alice stopped and grinned at her.
"Hi, Bethy," she greeted as she rushed over to her desk. The receptionist's real name was Bethany, but when they first met Alice had trouble pronouncing it, so she was forever dubbed Bethy.
"Sorry about her," I said with an awkward smile as I made my way towards Alice, grabbing her hand as I reached her. "We have to be quiet in here, Alice."
Alice nodded as she followed me over to my desk. She gave the receptionist one final wave.
Bethany laughed, which was strange coming from her as she was usually rude and passive aggressive. "It's no problem, really. Alice is just the sweetest thing!"
Alice's serious face quickly slipped back into a smile. I pulled up a chair right next to my desk and helped her climb onto it. Once she got situated she started swinging her legs as she'd clearly inherited my ADHD.
"You wanna watch Finding Nemo?" I whispered to her, which caused her face to brighten and her to nod vigorously. "Okay, you can watch it, but you have to stay quiet, remember?"
Alice nodded and watched me intensely as I pulled out my phone and connected headphones to it. After I got the movie up I handed her the phone and reminded her to be careful and quiet for what seemed like the millionth time. She quickly became immersed in the movie and forgot all about me.
As the hour went by Alice settled down and, as per my promise, didn't make a noise, meaning I was more than relieved.
"Hey, uh I got your email—" Percy started as he made his way over to his desk. He raised an eyebrow when he saw Alice. "Oh, hi, Alice!"'
Alice looked up and immediately ripped the headphones out of her ears. She stood up and grinned. "Cool guy, why are you here?"
Percy retuned her grin and enthusiasm and crouched to her height. "I work here, didn't your mommy tell you that?"
"Nope," she replied and shook her head. "So, you see each other? Like, all the time?"
I laughed nervously and quickly tried to get Alice's attention back to the phone. "Sorry she's here, my daycare cancelled, it probably won't happen again. Hey, Alice, honey, is the movie over?"
Alice, of course, ignored me and finished her conversation with Percy. "So, what do you do? Do you make buildings like mommy?"
"Oh, no, I'm nowhere near as smart as your mommy," Percy replied. "I'm just here to pick out lights and stuff like that. It's boring, really."
As Alice's eyes widened with curiosity I knew I was in deep trouble. I knew that face better than the back of my hand, she was clearly intrigued and wanted to know more.
"What else?" Alice asked quickly. "Do you get to design things?"
Percy shrugged. "I mean, I guess? My job is to mainly pick them out. I add features to the buildings."
"Like what?"
"Fish tanks," Percy said smugly, causing her eyes to widen even more. "And elevators, escalators, offices. Even plants. Stuff like that."
Alice peered back at me. "And you design it all?"
I bit my lip, nodded, and then shrugged, deciding it was better if I didn't go into the details of my job as I'd probably bore her. "Sure; now what movie do you want to watch next? I think Moana is on Netflix."
"Nah, Disney Plus," Percy interjected before turning bright red. "What? Estelle likes Disney princesses!
I raised an eyebrow at him questioningly.
"Oh, be quiet," Percy retorted.
"Can I see the fish tanks?" Alice asked anxiously, turning the conversation back over to her.
"No," I snapped, causing her to frown. "I mean, Percy is very busy today. I'm sure that he doesn't have time to show you."
Percy peered at his watch before grinning at Alice. "You know, my schedule is actually wide open right now. If your mommy agrees, I'll show you the fish tank designs. And the fish were getting."
Alice stared at me with her signature begging face, which wasn't much different from Percy's. I sighed and nodded. "Okay, okay, you can stop begging. But only if it doesn't disturb Percy's work."
"It doesn't, I promise!" Percy swore and winked at me before leading Alice into the conference room. Immediately the two started laughing as he showed her all of the designs, and I couldn't help but crack a small smile as I watched them work.
"So, how long have you been into him?" Bethany asked as she dropped a piece of paper on my desk.
I blinked and pulled my eye contact off of them and onto Bethany. "W-what?"
"Oh, you heard me," she replied smoothly before heading back over to her desk. "It's not a secret. In fact, it's actually quite obvious."
"You're wrong," I snapped back at her. "I'm not into him. And even if I was it's none of your business!"
She sarcastically raised her hands in surrender before rolling her eyes. "You know, you two would actually be kinda perfect together. He already likes Alice but, I mean, who doesn't?"
"Be quiet Bethany," I snapped as Alice and Percy headed out of the conference room and back to my desk.
"We've made a lot of progress today," Percy said as he arrived at my desk, Alice besides him. "All of the fish are now ordered and named."
I couldn't help but laugh at Percy. "They're all named already? That's quite ambitious."
Percy shrugged. "Well, she's hardworking, just like her mother."
I felt my face turn red and prayed he didn't see it as he walked away. Alice awoke me from my trance by repeatedly tapping on my arm.
"Movie time now?" she pestered before staring back at the conference room just like I had. "Can I watch Finding Nemo again?"
I laughed. "Again?"
"Again!"
