It was a silent ride, Boomhauer wanted to be careful with what he wanted to say to Dale.
Dale has never been this quiet before, or sad either. He saw him cry over the plaza being west, but this is an entirely different story
Dale pulled over and went outside.
Boomhauer followed him. "One boat and two fishing rods please." Dale asked the man behind the stand. The man nodded, fetching the items Dale asked for.
Dale and Boomhauer sat in the boat. The silence followed them as none spoke a word. Dale was concentrated on fishing, but Boomhauer kept on staring at Dale. Dale felt like he was being watched and looked at Boomhauer, who quickly removed his glance
"What do you want Boomhauer." Dale asked bitterly.
"Dang ol Gribble man you got me concerned about yuh, silent on the dang ride man." Boomhauer said. "I'm sorry Boomhauer it's just really hurtful of the events that happened. It's worse since you guys knew it and no one told me, even if it's not me being hurt." He said as he mocked the word hurt.
Dale was right, even when the guys knew, they should've told him. Boomhauer felt guilty
"Dang ol Nancy and you done man?" Boomhauer asked, with a tone of guilt
"Do you really expect me to stay with her after what she did? I loved her so much, and I'm stupid for thinking we would die together" Dale said sadly. "I know Bill told her what I said. Now I'm screwed. I have no place to live in, I can't continue exterminating since it won't contribute to the bills, and I lost Joseph." Dale said as his voice cracked.
"I love Joseph, he's not my flesh and blood, but still a son of my own who I love. I'm willing to stay with Nancy for Joseph's sake." Dale said
"Gribble, man don't do that." Boomhauer said. "Why not?" Dale asked. "Dang ol gonna be miserable man, solved your dang problems since you're living with me man." Boomhauer said.
"You want me to live with you?" Dale asked in a surprised tone. "I mean Hank was my first option, but considering how'd he get sick of me he'd kick my ass in a second!" Dale said as he imitated Hank for the ass part. Boomhauer chuckled at the impression of Hank. Dale is being back to his own self, and Boomhauer missed that.
"But what about Joseph?" Dale asked. "Dang ol Joseph loves you man. Yuh raised him your whole life man." Boomhauer said in a comforting tone. "You're right, I'm hoping that's the case." Dale said. "Thanks Boomhauer. I owe you one." Dale said as a flashed a small smile to Boomhauer. Boomhauer slightly blushed. "Yuh don't owe me a gotdang thing man." Boomhauer said as he smiled back at Dale.
"Let's see if any of these bastards reel in..." Dale said as he began to fish. The atmosphere was always peaceful. It was always Dale and Boomhauer. They'd lie to Hank and Bill about going to their convention and family reunion as an excuse for them to fish and hunt treasure together. Well.. that didn't last as those two found out, but it was fun while it lasted.
After some time they decided to go back to Arlen. It was night, Dale was sure no one worried about him or anything. Dale looked over at Boomhauer, who was asleep. Atleast he had someone to tolerate him. Dale parked his truck on Boomhauer's driveway. Dale sighed as he looked back at his house. "Goodnight Joseph.." he said in a sad tone.
Dale gently shook Boomhauer. "mmm.." Boomhauer mumbled in drowsiness. Dale shook his head. Dale shook Boomhauer harder this time. This time it worked as Boomhauer was wide awake. "What's your dang ol problem man!" Boomhauer yelled. "Well I'm sorry Boomhauer the GENTLE way was INEFFECTIVE." Dale yelled back. Boomhauer shook his head. "Lets just go in the dang house man." Boomhauer said as he got out of the car.
They entered Boomhauer's house. Dale liked being here during his visits with his friends. "It's nice to be here again." Dale said as he took a puff of his cigarette. "Yuh like being here man?" Boomhauer asked. "Yep." Dale said
"Want the dang bed man?" Boomhauer asked. "No it's good. I'll sleep on the sofa Boomhauer. Thank you for letting me stay here." Dale said as he laid down on the sofa
"Lemme go get the ol blankets and the ol pillows man. I jus wanna make sure yuh comfortable man." Boomhauer said. "Sure." Dale said. When boomhauer went to fetch the things, Dale looked at the ceiling. He's grateful that he found a place to stay for some time since he couldn't face Nancy.
His heart ached when he thought of Nancy, and all those moments with John Redcorn in the shower, on his mower, near Joseph, when he saw his wife and John Redcorn dressing up quickly, and those hushed whispers. What was in front of him was the most obvious hints that god threw towards him and he ignored them.
"God. Could I get anymore pathetic?" Dale asked himself.
Boomhauer returned with pillows and a blanket. "Here yuh go man." Boomhauer said. "Thanks Boomhauer." Dale said quietly. "goodnight man." Boomhauer said as he went upstairs. "Goodnight." Dale said quietly again, taking off his cap and sunglasses as he tried to sleep.
