"Don't have to sleep in the sofa man." Boomhauer said. "I don't wanna be invasive." Dale said. "No man." Boomhauer said as he grabbed Dale. He brought Dale to his room. "It's a good dang size, just lay down man." Boomhauer said as he laid down. Dale wasn't very sure of this still. Boomhauer's noticed. "Dang ol it's jus like our sleepovers as kids, hop in." Boomhauer said. Dale finally listened to Boomhauer as he laid next to him.
Dale took off his sunglasses and hat. Finally he had gotten comfy on his side, back facing Boomhauer. The night was so peaceful. No thoughts invading his mind. He could feel the soft breaths of Boomhauer as his back touched his. He had to admit, it was nice to feel another person's warmth.
In the kitchen while they were talking, Dale noticed they've got a lot closer than what the fishing trip did. He remembered the smile Boomhauer gave him. As kids, it was always him and boomhauer. Hank and Bill would be off doing adventures and dares, which Dale couldn't bring himself to do.
Now look at how the tables turned, it's now Dale who has a knack for adventures. The gun club certainly ignited it, as they would go and do hunts that would make him explore some parts of the areas he'd never seen.
Yet, despite not being adventurous as a little kid, it didn't affect Boomhauer. Boomhauer always stayed with him. Even when he got a label on him from the other kids, Boomhauer was there.
*flashback*
A little boy was crying on the bench. "Why am I such a freak?" He said as he whimpered. A taller kid sat next to him. "Y'alright Gribble?" The taller boy asked. He sniffed. "No I'm not Boomhauer! these kids made me eat all sortsa bugs and made fun of me!" A young Dale said as he cried. "Y'dang were able t'eat bugs?" A young Boomhauer said, surprised. "Yeah... you're disgusted by me aren't you?" Dale said, looking at the ground. "Whaddya mean? I dang ol couldn't do that! y'are cool!" Boomhauer said, smiling.
Dale stopped crying and looked at Boomhauer. "R-really?" Dale said, a small smile forming on his face. "Yeah! now come t'dang on! we got t'get a tent for t'stars!" Boomhauer said as he grabbed Dale's hand. Dale smiled brighter than the sun that day. "Will we see those constellations everybody talks about?" Dale asked. "With t'pace like this we won't man!" Boomhauer said as he laughed. Dale found himself to laugh with his best friend as well.
*flashback ends*
Dale smiled at that memory. He remembered all night they had set up a small tent they borrowed from Boomhauer's dad. They sat together on the cool grass as they watched the stars. He remembered how he was trying to make out some constellations with Boomhauer.
In middle school Boomhauer would always stand up to Dale's bullies. Dale remembered how his bullies would steal his lunch money and such, but Boomhauer would always be there to get it back for him. Boomhauer even offered to share his own lunch when Dale couldn't afford his one day. He never even forgot that.
And High School. High school was rough for Dale. He lost his mother, and his father became so distant. Hank, Bill, and Boomhauer were always busy with Football, and Dale was just proud at being the towel manager. Whenever Dale would just clean up in the lockers room, Boomhauer would always pop in to check on him.
*flashback*
"Dang ol y'done with t' dang towels man?" Boomhauer asked, drying his platinum blond hair. "Oh yeah, almost." Dale said. "Oh dang ol hurry man, we are goin t'Whataburger!" Boomhauer said. Dale looked at Boomhauer with widened eyes. "Whataburger? Don't you have practice later?" Dale asked, quite softly.
"yeah man, but i dang ol wanted t'spend time with y'after so long." Boomhauer said, scratching his head and smiling. Dale found himself blushing light pink at that comment. "O-oh okay, sure." Dale said, caught off guard. As soon as Dale was done, he found himself sitting next to Boomhauer in his red mustang.
They were at the drive thru, just waiting for their turn. "Dang ol y'decided?" Boomhauer asked as he nudged Dale. "I'll just have a burger. I guess you're having the same?" Dale asked. Boomhauer chuckled. "Dang ol yeah, add a milkshake with that." Boomhauer said.
They finally got out of the drive thru. "So, how are things going with Madison." Dale asked out of the blue. "Madison? Dang ol done man, she is dang fake." Boomhauer said. Boomhauer looked at Dale. "And y'dang ol warned me and I ignored it." Boomhauer said, feeling guilt.
"Apology accepted." Dale said as he smiled. Boomhauer smiled. "Besides, there's plenty of girls in the sea, you'll find someone." Dale said. "I could dang ol say that for y'too." Boomhauer said as he snickered. Dale scoffed. "For your information, I met a girl under the bleachers. Nancy Hicks." Dale said, crossing his arms.
"T'girl from t'other school?" Boomhauer asked. "Well yeah, she got lost and i helped her, then we ended up making out under the bleachers." Dale said, smiling at the memory. "Y'gonna see her again?" Boomhauer asked. "I hope so, she feels like the one." Dale said.
It was quiet for some time, just enjoying their meal in Boomhauer's car. Dale looked at Boomhauer, he needs to tell him about what he just found out. Just yesterday he eavesdropped on Boomhauer and the coach's conversation.
"Boomhauer... don't leave Arlen." Dale said. Boomhauer looked at him. "I know you got that sport scholarship to Houston. Don't go." Dale said.
Boomhauer was surprised. "How did y'find out?" Boomhauer asked. "The walls aren't so thick, Boomhauer." Dale said. Dang ol Gribble... y'will have ol hank n' Bill." Boomhauer said. "But they're boring." Dale said. This earned a laugh from Boomhauer. "I dang ol promise I'll write back." Boomhauer said.
Dale sighed. "You promise right?" He asked. "I dang ol promise." Boomhauer said. They both smiled at eachother. "Well, it is getting pretty dark out. You got your practice right?" Dale said. Boomhauer just nodded. Both of them really didn't want to leave, and just spend the night together, like they did during simple times. "Good luck." Dale said. Dale got out of the car, and Boomhauer just watched him leave like that.
*flashback ends*
And he did keep his promise.
