Ch. 5 She's pretty

[Revised: Sunday, July 14, 2024]

The Potter twins, Petunia, Dudley, and Hagrid, finished breakfast an hour later. Petunia stood up, collected the dirty dishes, and walked to the kitchen to wash them. Hagrid stretched, feeling full from the home-cooked meal.

"That was delicious, Petunia," Hagrid said with a kind smile as Basil and Harry ran upstairs to get dressed for the day.

"I'm glad you liked the food, Hagrid," Petunia replied softly.

Dudley stared curiously at Hagrid. "Um, are you a Giant?" he asked hesitantly, hoping not to offend.

Hagrid turned his gaze to Dudley and smiled. "I'm a Half-Giant. Mum is a Giant, and Dad is a Wizard."

Dudley raised an eyebrow, wondering how that was possible, but decided not to ask further. "That's cool," he said politely.

Basil and Harry came back downstairs, dressed in their new clothes. "Aww! I'm glad they fit!" Petunia said happily as she walked out of the kitchen.

"We should get going," Hagrid said to the twins.

Basil and Harry beamed with excitement. They were eager to visit the Wizarding World and get their school supplies.

"Petunia, I'll see you later," Hagrid said as he walked out of the house with the boys.

"Okay! You three, be careful!" Petunia waved goodbye. "Bass! Harry! Promise me you'll get me something from there," Dudley called out.

"Will do!" Basil reassured as he and Harry waved goodbye to their cousin and aunt.

Hagrid placed his hands on the boys' shoulders, and they disappeared, reappearing in an alleyway. "Follow me and stay close," Hagrid instructed as they approached the Leaky Cauldron.

Inside, the twins marveled at their surroundings. Hagrid greeted the owner, Tom. "I'm here to take Basil and Harry Potter to Diagon Alley."

Several patrons gasped, drawing the twins' attention. People began to talk and touch Harry as if he were a celebrity. Basil wrapped a protective arm around his brother, who looked scared and confused.

"I cannot believe it! It's Harry Potter! Do you have that scar on your forehead?" a man asked in awe.

Harry blinked, confused about how this stranger knew about his scar.

Basil eyed the crowd warily. A woman remarked, "I didn't know Lord and Lady Potter had two sons."

Tom intervened, scolding the customers. "Everyone, stand back! You're scaring the boys."

Tom apologized to Hagrid and the twins, who followed Hagrid to the back of the pub, heading towards Diagon Alley.

As they stepped into the courtyard behind the Leaky Cauldron, Hagrid tapped a specific sequence of bricks on the wall with his umbrella. The bricks shuddered and shifted, forming an archway that revealed the bustling heart of Diagon Alley.

Basil and Harry's eyes widened in amazement as they saw the vibrant shops and magical items on display. They had never seen anything like it.

"Stay close, you two," Hagrid reminded them as they entered the crowd.

Their first stop was Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The imposing marble building loomed over them, and the goblin guards eyed them warily as they entered. Basil and Harry followed Hagrid to a teller, who greeted them with a smirk.

"Mr. Basil Alder Potter and Mr. Harry James Potter are here to retrieve the keys to the Potter Family Vault," Hagrid explained.

The goblin's eyes gleamed with interest. "The Chosen One and The Guardian have finally arrived," he muttered, causing Basil and Harry to exchange puzzled glances.

"Follow me," the goblin instructed, leading them to a door that opened into a long, narrow passage. They boarded a rickety mine cart, and the ride down to the vaults was a thrilling blur of twists and turns.

The goblin instructed the twins to place their right hands on the wall at the Potter Family Vault. The vault door creaked open, confirming their identity as the rightful heirs. Inside, mountains of gold, silver, and bronze coins glittered in the dim light.

"Here, these bags are for you to put your money inside. Do. Not. Lose. Them," the goblin warned as he handed over two brown bags.

Basil and Harry carefully filled their bags with coins, ensuring they had enough for their school supplies. They also received keys to the vault for future access, which they stored safely in their pockets.

Once they returned to the surface, Hagrid led them out of Gringotts. "Alright, I have something important to do, but I'll be back soon. Go to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions and get your school uniforms."

Basil and Harry nodded, assuring Hagrid they would stay put. They entered the robe shop and were greeted by a friendly assistant.

"Hello, dearies. First-year students?" she asked.

"Yes, ma'am," Harry replied as Basil nodded.

"Follow me, please," she said, leading them to two stools. "Raise your arms while these ladies take your measurements."'

As the seamstresses worked, Basil began to get bored. His attention wandered to the door, which opened to admit a striking figure with sleek, white-blond hair and piercing grey eyes. The individual looked around the shop, and Basil found himself staring.

She's pretty, he thought, his heart skipping a beat. She looks like a mix of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

The blond-haired individual noticed Basil's gaze and smiled softly at him. Basil's emerald green eyes met their grey ones, and everything else seemed to fade away for a moment.

"Dearie, you can now get your school uniform," one of the seamstresses said, breaking the spell.

Basil and Harry walked to the cashier and paid for their uniforms. As they left, the blond-haired individual called out, "See you at Hogwarts!"

Basil blushed and smiled back. "Um, you too," he said, waving as he left the store.

Hagrid was waiting outside. "Got everything you need?" he asked.

"Yes, Hagrid," Harry replied, holding his new robes.

"Good. Now, let's get your books and supplies," Hagrid said, leading them to Flourish and Blotts.

The bookstore was a maze of shelves filled with magical books. Hagrid handed them a list of required texts, and the twins split up to find what they needed. They overheard snippets of conversation about themselves and the magical world they were entering as they gathered their books.

"Look, it's the Potter twins!"

"Do you think they know how famous they are?"

"Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived! And his brother, Basil!"

The attention was overwhelming, but Basil and Harry tried to stay focused. They picked out their books and met Hagrid at the counter, where he paid for their purchases.

Next, they visited the Apothecary for potion ingredients, Eeylops Owl Emporium for a pet (Harry chose a snowy owl named Hedwig), and Ollivanders for their wands.

The wand shop was narrow and shabby, with thousands of narrow boxes piled high to the ceiling. An old man with wide, pale eyes approached them. "Good afternoon," he said softly. "I am Ollivander."

Hagrid greeted him, and the twins explained they needed wands. Ollivander's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Potter twins, eh? Let's find the right wands for you."

He began by measuring their arms and examining their hands. Then, he started handing them wands to try. After several unsuccessful attempts, a holly and phoenix feather wand chose Harry, and a willow and unicorn hair wand chose Basil. They felt a surge of warmth and power when they held their wands.

"Curious," Ollivander murmured. "Very curious."

"What's curious?" Basil asked.

"I remember every wand I've ever sold. It so happens that Harry, the phoenix whose feather is in your wand, gave another feather—just one. It is the core of the one that gave you the scar. That is curious indeed."

Basil and Harry exchanged curious glances. They paid for their wands and left the shop, rejoining Hagrid outside.

"All set?" Hagrid asked.

"All set," the twins echoed, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about the adventures that lay ahead.

As they made their way back through Diagon Alley, Basil couldn't help but glance back at the shop where he had seen the blond-haired individual. He wondered who they were and if they would meet again at Hogwarts.

With their supplies in hand and their minds buzzing with anticipation, Basil and Harry felt ready to take on the magical world together.
