Ch. 20 First Day of School

It was the morning of Monday, September 2, 1991. Students got ready for the day, ate breakfast in the Great Hall, and received their class schedules from their Head of House.
Basil's schedule for the day was Charms, Herbology, Break, Potions, Lunch, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Study Hall, Dinner, and then free time until nine in the evening.
Basil and his friends speed-walked to their first class when the bell rang. They successfully made it to the Charms classroom, where they saw they would be sharing the course with Gryffindor.
Basil felt thrilled that his younger brother was in the same class.
"Harry! I am so happy to see you! How did you sleep?" Basil asked, sounding happy.
Harry, who had been talking to his new friends, frowned. He still couldn't believe his older brother got sorted into one of the most disliked Houses in Hogwarts.
"I'll save you a seat next to me when you're done, okay, mate," Ron whispered to Harry before walking away with Seamus and Dean.
Harry nodded in response and turned to greet his older brother. "I slept well for once. At least I don't get to hear you snore," Harry responded.
Basil frowned at his younger brother's response. "I don't snore!" Basil remarked.
Harry gave his older brother a look, implying that he did indeed snore. Basil opened his mouth to say something, but the second bell cut him off. The two brothers went their separate ways, with Basil sitting beside Draco while Harry sat beside Ron.
The first-year students chatted but stopped when they saw their Charms Professor, Filius Flitwick, enter the room. Professor Flitwick introduced himself to the class and took attendance. He then explained Charms and what spells they should know throughout the school year.
"Now, who can tell me the main objective of Charms?" Professor Flitwick asked after explaining the concept of the subject.
Some first-year Gryffindor and Slytherin students raised their hands. Professor Flitwick smiled when he saw Basil with his hand raised, looking excited.
"Mr. Basil Potter, do you perhaps know the main objective of Charms?" Professor Flitwick asked.
All the first-year students turned their gaze to Basil.
"After hearing your explanation, I figured that Charms is a course that teaches you how to cast specific types of spells known as Charms. These spells can alter an object without changing its essential nature. For example, in the Locking spell, or Colloportus, the object affected is the lock. The door doesn't change except for the lock. If the door is unlocked, the lock is only altered by locking it," Basil explained.
"Ten points to Slytherin for an amazing explanation of the overall objective of Charms," Professor Flitwick nodded in response.
The first-year Slytherins looked at Basil with approval. "Great job, Green Eyes," Draco lightly patted Basil's back.
Basil smiled brightly at Draco, feeling happy. He turned his gaze to his younger brother, his smile fading when he saw Harry looking dissatisfied.
An hour later, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the first period. As the students packed their belongings into their school bags, Professor Flitwick informed them that their only assignment was to read about the Levitation Charm, Wingardium Leviosa, which they would be learning about tomorrow.
Despite being discouraged by Harry's disappointment, Basil pushed aside his negative thoughts. He didn't want to let his House down by not participating.
Basil and his friends headed to their second period, Herbology. Once they entered the
Greenhouse, they noticed they would share the course with Hufflepuff.
"I heard that the Professor of Herbology is the Hufflepuff's Head of House. Do you think they will be biased towards their House?" Blaise asked while standing between Basil and Theodore.
"I doubt that since it would be unfair," Cordelia responded while standing between Daphne and Pansy.
Basil looked around and smiled softly when he saw a familiar face. "Hey," Basil waved when he saw first-year Hufflepuff Wizard Neville Longbottom standing between his two female Housemates.
Neville tensed up when he saw Basil waving at him, remembering that the young Wizard had saved Trevor despite accidentally having his toad in his mouth. He decided to wave back out of politeness.
"Why are you waving at him?" Draco asked while eyeing Neville and standing between Basil and Gregory.
"I saw that he seems nervous, and since I know him from that time on the Hogwarts Express, I figured I should say hello to calm his nerves," Basil responded.
"I see," Draco nodded in response.
The school bell rang, signaling the start of the second period. They watched their Herbology Professor, Pomona Sprout, enter the Greenhouse.
Professor Sprout introduced herself and took attendance. She then began to explain what types of magical and mundane plants and fungi they would be learning about.
Basil thought the subject was interesting, and it reminded him of gardening, one of his favorite hobbies. He used to do it with his Aunt Petunia back in the Muggle world.
"Speaking of Aunt Petunia, I should write her a letter during lunch and give it to Hedwig to take to her once school ends," Basil told himself, nodding his head.
An hour later, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the second period. Professor Sprout informed her students that their only assignment was to read about the Fire-Making spell, Incendio since they needed to know it before confronting a dangerous magical plant called the Devil's Snare.
"Finally! It's break time," Blaise cheered while walking out of the Greenhouse with his friends.
"We only have a break for fifteen minutes," Theodore reminded.
"Don't remind me!" Blaise whined.
Basil amusingly stared at his friends, and his bright green eyes blinked when he saw his younger brother with Ron, Seamus, and Dean in the courtyard. He was about to look away but stopped when he saw them surround Neville, who was holding a tiny plant vase. His eyes widened when he saw Seamus take it away from Neville.
"Well. What do we have here?" Seamus asked while holding the tiny vase in his hands.
"Give it back! That's my Mimbulus mimbletonia plant! Professor Sprout gave it to me to take care of!" Neville tried to get his tiny vase back from Seamus.
"Catch it, mate!" Seamus threw it to Ron, who caught it.
Basil's forehead twitched when he saw Neville trip and fall.
"This is one strange-looking plant," Ron remarked while oddly staring at the tiny vase.
"I mean it! Give it back to me!" Neville stood up and shouted, looking upset. He turned to Ron and ran to grab his tiny vase.
"Harry! Catch it!" Ron shouted while throwing the tiny vase to Harry when he saw Neville running towards him.
Basil's body began to shake with fury when he saw Neville lying on the ground after Ron stepped aside, causing the Hufflepuff to trip and fall.
Harry caught the tiny vase and silently stared at it. Neville turned his gaze to Harry, holding out his hand, thinking that the Boy-Who-Lived would return his tiny vase to him.
"Please, Harry, give it back to me," Neville's watery eyes stared at Harry.
Harry's bright green eyes intently stared at Neville. Basil decided it was enough when he saw that Harry wouldn't give the tiny plant to Neville.
"I'll be back," Basil mumbled, causing Draco and his friends to stare at him.
"Where are you going?" Draco asked, and he got his answer when he saw Basil walk towards Harry and his friends.
"Harry!" Basil shouted.
Harry's hands tightly grasped the tiny vase when he heard his older brother's voice.
"What do you want?" Harry asked, turning his gaze to his older brother.
Basil walked up to his younger brother and held out his hand. "Give me that vase. It's not yours," Basil firmly said.
Draco and his friends entered the courtyard, intently watching the two brothers.
"We should do something," Blaise firmly said.
"Daphne and I will get Professor Snape," Cordelia responded, and the two female Slytherins ran to get their Head of House.
"It's not yours either. Why do you want it?" Harry asked.
Basil stared at his younger brother as though he were an idiot. "I said to give that vase to me!" Basil firmly said, putting his hands on the tiny vase and starting to yank it away from Harry's grasp.
"No!" Harry shouted, firmly grasping the tiny vase and pulling it away from Basil.
"Harry! What are you, five? I said let go of that vase!" Basil sternly shouted.
"Hey, Slytherin! Let go of Harry!" Ron shouted, starting to walk towards Basil.
Draco's grey eyes narrowed when he saw that Basil's back was defenseless. He pulled out his wand and walked towards Ron.
"I suggest you step back, Weasle!" Draco sneered while standing between Ron and Basil.
"It's Weasley, you Ferret-Face!" Ron shouted, pulling out his odd-looking wand and aiming it at Draco.
Seamus and Dean decided to help Ron by pulling out their wands and aiming them at Draco as they walked towards him.
Blaise and Theodore also decided to help Draco by pulling out their wands and aiming them at the trio as they walked towards them.
"Three against one isn't fair. So, might as well join the fun," Blaise said while standing to Draco's right.
"I dare you to hit us with one of your poorly aimed spells," Theodore said while standing to Draco's left.
Professor Snape entered the courtyard with Daphne and Cordelia following him. He narrowed his eyes when he saw four Gryffindors and four Slytherins standing in a stalemate. He walked closer and overheard his first-year students' conversations. He intervened when he saw his first-year Slytherin Basil Potter yank a tiny vase away from his first-year Gryffindor brother, Harry Potter. He also heard Neville Longbottom shout.
"Harry! Please! Give my Mimbulus mimbletonia back to me!" Neville shouted, his watery eyes staring at Harry.
"Enough!" Professor Snape shouted.
Everyone froze when they heard the Potions Professor's voice.
Basil successfully yanked the tiny vase away from Harry and held it out for Neville to take.
Neville nervously grabbed the tiny vase from Basil's hands and turned his gaze to Professor Snape.
Professor Snape saw this and walked towards the first-year Hufflepuff Wizard.
"Mr. Longbottom, what do I hear about Gryffindors harassing you and trying to take your Mimbulus mimbletonia plant from you?" Professor Snape asked, his dark eyes intently staring at Neville.
Neville gulped and slightly shook. "Well... uh... yes, Professor," Neville responded.
The Potions Professor saw this, feeling both anger and concern. He decided to turn his gaze to Harry and his first-year Gryffindors.
"I do not want to hear excuses from any of you four. You all will follow me to see Professor McGonagall and explain what has happened," Professor Snape's dark eyes narrowed at the four first-year Gryffindor students.
The first-year Gryffindor students looked down and sadly walked towards Professor Snape. He gave a slight nod and turned his gaze to Basil.
"I am glad you and your friends intervened, Mr. Basil Potter. I'll escort Mr. Longbottom to Professor Sprout and these four to Professor McGonagall. You may spend the rest of your break with your friends," Professor Snape softly said.
Basil blinked in confusion when he heard his Head of House speak to him softly. He nodded in response, not wanting to feel any more awkward, and turned his gaze to his younger brother.
Harry wanted to tell his older brother off but decided against it, not wanting to deal with his Head of House and the Potions Professor's wrath.
Professor Snape turned his gaze to Neville, put a hand on his back, and gently escorted him away from the courtyard with the four first-year Gryffindor students following behind.
Basil watched his Head of House walk away from the courtyard with Neville and the five first-year Gryffindors. He began to shake uncontrollably until he felt Draco's hand on his shoulder.
"That was intense," Draco said while putting his wand away.
Basil turned his gaze to Draco and smiled softly. "Yeah," Basil responded while feeling his face heat up.
Ron stops walking when he notices Harry staring back at Basil, and he feels his blood boil.
"Harry! Get over here before Snape catches you loitering!" Ron shouted.
Harry, startled, ran towards Ron and Seamus.
Ron turned his gaze to Draco and the other first-year Slytherins, narrowing his eyes. "This isn't over, Slytherin!" Ron shouted before walking away with Harry, Seamus, and Dean.
Basil began to shake uncontrollably again when he felt the heated glares from some Gryffindor students.
"You can relax now, Green Eyes. The show's over," Draco said, patting Basil's back.
Basil turned his gaze to Draco, smiled softly, and nodded. "Thanks, Draco," Basil softly said.
The first-year Slytherins felt relaxed when they noticed the break was almost over. They decided to chat for a bit before the bell rang, signaling the end of the break.
