Chapter 27
Ten Years earlier
"You wanted to talk to–," Lila said as she entered her mother’s office. "– me."
She paused at the door, confused, when she noticed the baby the blonde woman was holding in her arms.
The black-haired young woman looked from her mother to the baby and back to her mother.
"What the fuck is that?", Lila wanted to know.
The Handler chuckled and stepped away from her desk.
"That's a baby, darling. Your little sister," the older woman explained.
A little sister, Lila wondered. She wasn't sure what to think about it.
"Why don’t you say 'hello' to her", said The Handler.
Lila, still suspicious about this thing, took a step towards her mother and new sister.
The little girl was wrapped in a green blanket and was sleeping peacefully.
"I know it's confusing. Her parents are dead– long story. I couldn't leave her all alone," explained The Handler.
"Why?", Lila wanted to know.
She loved her mom, but Lila also knew that The Handler wasn't the type of woman who would adopt a random child.
"Because she reminded me of you," the blonde woman replied.
She smiled at her oldest daughter and at that moment the baby woke up.
She looked around and then started complaining again.
"Oh no, I think someone's hungry. Would you mind holding her for a second?"
The younger woman shrugged her shoulders and then took the little girl in her arms.
She was preparing to calm the little one down, but the girl immediately stopped screaming.
"See, she likes you", said The Handler and left the office to look for a bottle.
Lila looked at the girl in her arms and carefully adjusted the green blanket.
"So, you are Rhea," Lila murmured as she noticed the embroidered letters on the blanket.
Rhea looked up at her and for a moment it looked like she was smiling.
"Cool name. I'm Lila."

Little Rhea sat on the carpet in her mother's office, playing with her building blocks.
She built a little tower again and again, only to knock it over every time– finding this very funny.
The Toddler only stopped for a second when her sister entered the room.
"Darling, how was the mission?"
"Good. Everything went according to plan, as always," Lila reported.
She sat down on a chair in front of her mother's desk.
Rhea watched the two of them for a few more minutes until she got bored and continued destroying her little towers.
The girl was interrupted as she was picked up by her sister.
"Come on, Munchkin. Let's get something to eat."
~~~~
'Happy 6th Birthday' was written on the green coloured cake, which was almost completely eaten.
"I don't feel so well," Rhea murmured and put the small plate on the desk.
"Yeah, because you ate four pieces of cake," Lila reminded her little sister.
"Well, half of it is still on her face," said The Handler.
She walked around her desk, grabbed a napkin, and wiped the cake crumbs from Rhea's cheek.
"Mom," the girl complained, pushing her mother's hand away.
The Handler rolled her eyes and placed the napkin on a small plate that was no longer needed.
"That reminds me", the blonde woman changed the subject. "I still have something for you."
The Handler pulled a red envelope out of the drawer and handed it to Rhea.
The little girl furrowed her eyebrows and opened the envelope.
She paused as she pulled a photo out of the envelope.
"Are these?"
"You birth parents? Yes. I wanted to tell you, when you were older, but I thought about it and you are right. You have the right to know. Your parents death was, connected to a case. The–"
"Mom, I don't think that's a topic for today," Lila interrupted her mother.
She knew Rhea really wanted to know what happened to her parents, but it was her birthday.
The young woman wished her little sister a nice day.
Her mother could still tell Rhea the story tomorrow or any other day.
"No, I want to hear it," said Rhea and looked at Lila.
"Are you sure?", Lila wanted to know.
"Yes."
The Handler cleared his throat.
"The man who killed your parents was supposed to be eliminated hours before the accident, but your agent was too late. Because of this change in the original plan I visited the scene to check that everything was back in order. And there you were… A little baby who just lost her parents. And I just knew."
Rhea listened carefully to her mother. Her only reaction was a slight nod when The Handler finished speaking.
Her big sister and mother gave the girl a few moments to process all the new information.
"You just knew", Rhea repeated the statement. "Knew what?"
"That you belong here, little darling", replied The Handler.
~~~~
Rhea followed her mother down the stairs to the shooting range.
Because according to The Handler, the girl was old enough to start her training.
"What if I'm not good enough?" Rhea asked.
She was a little nervous and, to be honest, a little confused.
Lila always told her she was too young, but she was on a mission and her mother seemed to think otherwise.
"Don't worry, no one expects you to be perfect on your first day," said The Handler and held the door open for Rhea.
The Handler took the time to explain to her daughter how to use a weapon, using an old-fashioned revolver as an example.
"– Now, why don't you try it yourself?" Rhea's mother finished her explanation.
Rhea hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
The girl carefully picked up the revolver and stood at the shooting range.
She took a moment to take a breath.
Then the six-year-old aimed at the target– emptying the magazine within seconds.
Rhea looked at the result excitedly.
It only hit the center of the round target.
Was that good?
The girl turned to her mother and wanted to ask when someone ran past the two of them.
"Oh, hello Hazel," The Handler greeted the man.
"Hello Handler, Hello Rhea."
"Hi, Hazel", Rhea waves at him (unintentionally) with the revolver.
"Rhea, please put the revolver away before you greet others."
The girl mumbled an apology and quickly put the gun aside.
"Don't worry about it," said Hazel and then his eyes fell on Rhea's target.
"Wow, you are a natural", commented the time agent.
Rhea turned around again and The Handler also took a look at the target.
"Of course she is," Rhea's mother replied with a proud grin. "It runs through family."
~~~~
"You know, I was at that band’s concert", reported Lila.
The sisters sat together in Rhea's room and listened to some of Lila's records.
"Really?"
"Yeah. It was after a mission. In Sydney, if I remember correctly."
"You don't remember?" Rhea raised an eyebrow. "Did someone have too much alcohol that night?"
"Hey, you little shit, watch your tone."
Rhea giggled, rolling onto her back and letting her head hang off the edge of the bed.
"I want to go to a concert too," the girl murmured.
"We will go to one", said Lila. "You'll pick the band."
"Pinky Promise?" Rhea asked, holding out her little finger to her sister.
"Pinky Promise," Rhea's big sister promised.
Rhea smiled: "Can I pick the next song?"
Her big sister nodded.
The seven-year-old jumped off the bed and put a new record in the record player.
Then she sat down next to Lila.
Halfway through the song, Rhea noticed the bandage on Lila's arm.
"What happened?"
"Oh, it's nothing," assured the young woman. "It doesn't even hurt."
Lila's little sister didn't believe her and looked at her worriedly.
"But what if it had been something worse?"
"Munchkin–"
"If you hadn't come back?"
"Muchkin…"
"I already lost my parents and I–"
"Calm down," Lila tried to calm her little sister.
She knew that Rhea was very sensitive to when she or her mother was hurt or left for long periods of time.
"– can't lose you too."
"Rhea, you won't lose me, okay. I'm right here."
"But–" the girl mumbled, but Lila shook her head.
"Did I ever lie to you?"
Rhea shook her head.
"Right, I didn't. Rhea, I promise you, I won't leave you ever. We are sisters and I love you. And there is nothing that could ever change that."
"There's going to be a lot of paperwork," Riley commented.
They looked up and down the street again to make sure no one else was here.
"I could help you with that," Martin suggested, standing next to Riley. "We could sit down later. I know a good Chinese restaurant and–"
"Finally. This took you forever," Riley commented as Five left the house before them.
He stopped for a moment in surprise and then joined the others.
"Love? What are you doing here?"
"The handler asked me to look after the child," Riley explained.
"What child?"
"The little girl."
Riley walked past Five and entered the house.
The girl hid in a closet.
"Hey there", Riley spoke to her. "Do you want to get out?"
The girl nodded and climbed out of the closet.
"Okay, keep your eyes close," Riley murmured, picking up the little girl.
She made sure that the girl's eyes were closed and left the house with her.
