Chapter 23
Riley and Five didn't have to wait long before Diego was brought into the room.
Riley stood up and hugged their brother.
"I missed you, idiot," said Riley.
"I missed you, too."
"Hey, no hugging", said one of the guards.
Riley let go of Diego and sat back down next to Five.
Diego sat down opposite the two.
"Five."
"Hey, Diego. You look good in white."
"Yeah, and your new look really suits you", Riley added.
Diego gave them a small smile before he turned back to Five.
"About time you showed up."
"How'd you know I'd be back?" Five wanted to know.
"Because that's the kind of shit you pull."
"Where are the others?"
"They're not with you?"
"We'll find them," Five murmured.
"How long have you been here?" Riley asked.
"Seventy-five days," Diego replied. "Landed in the alley behind–"
"– Commerce and Knox," all three finished the sentence.
"You?"
"April," Riley answered.
"Damn," Diego muttered. "You okay?"
"I am now," Riley assured with a smile on their face.
The Teenager was happy that they could finally get Diego out of here and with his help it would be easier to find the others.
"What about you?", Diego wanted to know from Five.
"I got here this morning."
"How'd you find me?"
Five scoffed and pulled the newspaper article about Diego out of his pocket.
"Page 16. 'Disturbed man with multiple knives arrested outside 1026 N. Beckley'. That's Lee Harvey Oswald's house. Care to explain?"
"Let's just say Dallas Law Enforcement has not been supportive of my attempt to stop the assassination of... John F. Kennedy."
"Because it hasn't happened yet," Riley said softly.
"And it's not going to happen. Not on my watch."
Riley sighed, "Diego, you can't–"
"Look, I've been shaving down the bars in my room. Another day or two, and I'll be out of this place, then I'm going to stop Oswald and save the president. You want in, say the word. "
"Listen to me very closely, you give me a moron", Five spoke up. "You are not going to do a goddamn thing."
"Why not?"
"Because we have to stop the apocalypse."
"No shit. But that doesn't happen for another 60 years."
"Not that apocalypse. This is a new one. It followed us. I've seen it. Nuclear war, Diego, in ten days."
Diego laughed softly and leaned back.
"And I'm the one they locked up, huh?"
"It's a lot to take in, but we need your help," said Riley.
"Fine, I'll play along. What causes it?"
"I don't know," Five replied. "Maybe some looney-tuned asshole with a hero complex tried to save the president and screwed everything up."
"So you're saying it worked?", Diego wanted to and Five just scoffed. "I saved the president? I knew I could do it. Okay, okay, I'll help you."
"Thank God."
"After I save Kennedy. And then you swing us back a few decades so I can slit Hitler's throat off with a butter knife."
"This is why you don't have any friends."
Diego said nothing. He even seemed to be seriously considering Five's words.
"You know what? Guard," said the teenager and stood up. "My brother is plotting an escape–"
"Five, what the fuck!"
"– The bars of his room have been shaved down."
"Piece of shit," Diego hissed and wanted to attack Five.
But two guards stopped him, holding him back.
"Hey, let him go!"
Riley jumped up and tried to intervene, but Five grabbed their hand and stopped them.
"Look, this is for your own good, Diego."
"No! Five!"
"Five, what are you doing?!"
"Listen, my brother is a very sick man–"
"No, Five!"
"Five, please–"
"– I only pray that he gets the help he so desperately needs."
A nurse entered the room with a needle in her hand.
"No, please! Not the needle!"
"Wait! He's afraid of needles," Riley explained, but the nurse ignored them.
"No! No! No!"
The woman poked Diego in the arm.
"Be back for you later, okay?" Five whispered to his brother. "Just... Well, nighty night."
Then he left the room with Riley.

As soon as Riley and Five left the building, Riley broke away from his grasp.
"What was that?"she wanted to know and was anything but enthusiastic. "I thought we would get him out."
"He's fine," replied Five. "We will get him out, just not now."
"Why not?" Riley wanted to know.
They just didn't understand why Five didn't just get his brother out of there.
Five just rolled his eyes and walked past Riley.
"He's not crazy!" Riley complained. "He shouldn't blush in there."
"Yeah, yeah, I know-"
"He is probably going through hell right now, and you don't even care–"
The black-haired teenager stopped abruptly.
"I am sorry, but I saw my family die. Again. And this time.. you were there, too. And I won't let that happen again. If I have to be the bad guy of the day, to save all of you, I am more than happy to be the bad guy."
Riley took a step back in surprise.
Although he had told them what he saw, he deliberately left out the detail that everyone else died.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"Honestly, I don't know," Five explained. "I would have told you, but first wanted to–"
"– stop the apocalypse," Riley finished Five’s sentence. "Of course."
The pair looked at each other in silence until Riley sighed.
"I am still mad."
"You know what? I'm a desperate man, I take everything I get."

Diego had managed to free himself from the white jacket and open the door of the room with a pen.
He staggered down the empty hallway until he met one of the guards.
"Ah, shit."
"Hargreeves. What are you doing out here?"
"I'm sleepwalking," Diego lied.
He tried to attack the other man, but with his dislocated shoulder that was almost impossible.
"Like to run your mouth, smart-ass? It's gonna be hard after I break your jaw."
Before he could seriously hurt Diego, the guard was knocked out by a bedpan and collapsed to the ground.
"Lila?"
"You're not the only one who wants out, wolf man!"
She stepped around the unconscious man and helped Diego stand.
"Watch my shoulder."
Lila adjusted his shoulder and put his arm around hers.
"This way," said the woman.
She led Diego further down the hallway to a stairwell.
"What are you planning to do?" Diego wanted to know as they ran up two floors.
Lila didn't answer him, but left the stairwell.
Again, no one was in sight and the two of them were able to sneak through the hallways– Diego still wondering, what they were doing here.
"Let go of me, you bloody moron," Lila and Diego heard a child’s voice.
Lila stopped for a second, changed direction and ran towards the voice.
They turned into another hallway where a girl was arguing with two guards.
"Shut up and go back to your room", hissed the first guard.
He walked towards the girl and she took the same number of steps back.
Diego wanted to intervene and help the girl, but before he could even take a step towards the three, the girl lunged forward.
She kicked the first guard between the legs.
The second tried to reach for her, but she slapped his hand away, stole his baton and hit the second unconscious.
Then she turned around and sent the first man to sleep, too.
"She’s got that from me," Lila explained, nudging Diego with her elbow.
"Hey, Munchkin," Lila called the girl.
She turned away from the unconscious men and only now noticed Lila and Diego.
"Lila!"
The girl ran towards the two adults and stopped in front of them.
"You okay?" Lila wanted to know and the girl nodded.
"Good–"
"Sorry to interrupt", Diego spoke up. "But we should hurry."
"Right," Lila murmured, reaching for the girl's hand.
The trio ran back down the halls to the stairwell and back to the floor where Lila and Diego originally came from.
Suddenly Lila and Diego stopped.
Three men with light blonde hair had suddenly appeared at the end of the hallway.
They stepped towards the sisters and Diego and started to shoot at them.
Lila pushed the girl behind her.
The sisters and Diego turned and ran in the other direction– Lila and Diego blocking the Girl from the Bullets.
"Who are those guys?" Lila asked.
"No idea."
Diego suddenly stopped and opened the door to another room.
"What the hell are you stopping for?"
"We need a distraction," explained Diego
The sisters realized that it was a kind of lounge for the nurses.
He pulled a small lever on the wall and activated the alarm– which also opened all the automatic doors.
"Follow me."
Diego led Lila and the girl into a small room that was used as a storage room.
"And what now?" the blackhaired girl wanted to know.
"This way," said Diego and pointed to the entrance to the laundry chute.
Which, as it turned out, led to the basement.
From there they just had to find their way out.
"Which way?"
"Right," Lila suggested.
"Why right?"
"Why not?" replied the girl, who was still holding Lila's hand.
"Okay," Diego mumbled and simply followed the other two.
Shortly before the exit, the three ran into two police officers.
Diego, Lila and the police officers fell to the ground while the girl was still able to stay on her feet.
"Thank God you're here," Lila said and stood up. "Three men just tried to attack us."
"Get your hands up, now."
One of the police officers also got up and was pointing his gun at the girl.
"Wait, you don't understand. We're not the bad guys," Diego tried to calm the other man, while Lila stepped in front of her sister.
"Shut your mouth and stay on the ground."
Without hesitation, Lila kicked the gun out of the policeman's hand, then kicked him in the stomach and finally knocked the man out.
"Where'd you learn how to fight like that?" asked Diego.
"My mother," Lila replied.
She took her sister's hand and left the building with Diego.

Luther was standing at the bar of the nightclub when a young woman approached him.
"Hi, Luther."
"Hey, Autumn. How's business?"
"Still waiting for the big tipsters to show up."
"Who's the half-wit bothering Mr. Ruby?" Luther asked, seeing that his boss wasn't happy about being approached by the other man.
"No idea, but he's been putting away vodka gimlets like they're gonna run out of limes."
"Oh, yeah? He gives you any trouble?"
"Not yet. But he's getting there. I'm more worried about the kids."
"What kids?"
"At the table," said the blonde woman and pointed to a round table where two teenagers, that Luther knew all too well, were sitting.
Riley was reading a book and Five was watching Riley reading.
"– I told them we don't allow minors."
"Oh, yeah? And what'd they say?"
"Nothing. One of them just gave me a big tip", Autumn giggled.
Luther excused himself and went straight to the table where two of his siblings were sitting.
He placed his hands on the table and leaned closer to Riley and Five.
"No kids allowed in this club, guys."
"Nice to see you too, Luther."
"What do you want?", Luther wanted to know.
"For you to stop hovering like an ambitious stripper and sit down with us," said Riley.
They put the book aside and Luther sat down at the table.
"How long have you been here?" asked Five.
"A year, thanks to you."
"I'm sorry, Luther. I know that couldn't–"
"Don’t apologize," Riley interrupted their husband. "It's not your fault."
Luther opened his mouth, but Riley wouldn't let him speak.
"It's not his fault."
"I thought everyone was dead," said Luther.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw his boss being further harassed by this 'half-wit' as Autumn called him.
"I gotta go," Luther declared.
"Luther, wait."
"Look, I get it, okay? I know what it's like to be stuck in time… Thinking this is how you're gonna live out the rest of your life. On the run, and not knowing if you're ever gonna see the people you love again, and to be in an unfamiliar world. But Luther, you're not alone. We have to find the others because the world ends again in ten days. I have no idea how to stop it."
"I don't give a shit," Luther replied and walked away.
"That went well," Riley commented and picked up their book again.

Diego, Lila and the girl hid behind a car until the police car passed them and the three were safe for the moment.
"That was funny," said the child. "Can we do this again?"
"No," Diego and Lila answered at the same time.
The girl rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. She mumbled something that neither of the two adults understood.
Neither Lila nor Diego react and the girl placed her braid over her shoulder.
The child looked at Diego and only now seemed to realize that she didn't know him.
"Lila, who is the weird looking man we just helped escaping?"
"Oh, that's my friend–"
"– We are not friends."
"– Diego. Diego, this is my little sister."
Lila's little sister looked at Diego for a second with an unreadable look.
Then she smiled at him and held out her hand.
Diego raised an eyebrow.
Something about the girl seemed familiar.
But he wasn't sure if it was her slightly sarcastic smile or her unique eye color, he swore he knew from somewhere.
"I'm Rhea, nice to meet you, Diego."
