Chapter 21

Riley walked past the mailman as he left the newspaper at the front door.

Wednesday June 3, 1963.

The front page was about a topic that didn't interest Riley at all.

They picked up the newspaper and brought it into the house.

"Where have you been?"

Maggie and Chip stood at the stairs and looked less than thrilled.

"Looking for my family." (Breaking into another government building to get information)

Maggie scoffed and Chip crossed his arms over his chest.

That was the explanation Riley always gave when they were out all night.

The Adams couple didn't like this at all.

And at first they didn't say because they thought it would stop eventually– it didn't.

An argument broke out about Riley not telling the truth and that they should finally tell Maggie and Chip everything.

"Listen, you are a child. We just–"

"I am 58 years old," replied Riley. "I don't need someone to look after me."

They stopped and Maggie and Chip looked at them confused.

The teenager sighed and decided to tell them everything. From the first time travel accident ro the first apocalypse, the commission, the second apocalypse and the second time travel accident.

"– and since then I've been stuck here in 1963."

At first, Maggie and Chip didn't seem to believe Riley.

Riley understood that. When they talked about it, the teenager thought he was crazy– which, to a certain extent, they were.

"Superpowers?"

~~~~
July 6th was Maggie and Chip's anniversary.
The two drove away for the weekend. It was their 10th anniversary, so they planned this little trip long before they took Riley in.
And that was okay. Chip and Maggie deserved the weekend together and Riley was glad they had some time alone.
It was already get4ing dark outside and Riley sat down on the sofa when the theme song of their favorite series started.
It became something of a habit for Riley to sit in the living room with Chip and Maggie every Saturday and watch as the two main characters didn't dare confess their love to each other.
This week was no exception.
As the credits rolled, Riley turned off the TV and shuffled off to bed, disappointed at having to wait a week for a new episode.
~~~~

On August 17th, Riley was sitting on a bench watching 'the alley'.

The teenager did this several times a week, always careful not to be noticed.

"Hey," Maggie said and sat down.

She had to run a few errands and Riley waited on the bench for the young woman.

"You know, I thought about it. What if your siblings are already here?"

"I left a message," Riley replied.

Maggie nodded and pointed out that it was possible that Riley's siblings didn't read the message.

Riley and Maggie stayed there for a while before the young woman stood up.

"It's getting late, are you ready?"

She gave Riley a moment and the teenager stood up and took a shopping bag from Maggie.

"Did you get everything?" asked Riley.

The dark-haired woman replied that she received everything and dug her car keys out of her pocket on the way to the car.

Riley put the shopping bags in the back seat and raised an eyebrow in surprise when they saw what Maggie had bought.

"Why did you buy baby clothes?"

"Wel... we are going to need them in a few months," Maggie explained with a big grin on her face and placed her hand on her stomach.

It took Riley a moment to process the information, but then they smiled.

"Congratulations."

The teenager pulled Maggie into a hug.

On the morning of September 3rd, 1963, it was a Tuesday, Chip was reading the newspaper.

That wasn't unusual. What was unusual was the article about a crazy man who was arrested the day before– according to the article he had several knives with him.

Maybe this was something Riley was looking for.

He knocked on Riley's bedroom door.

When he didn't get an answer, he opened the door.

"Riley?"

"Go away."

Chip sighed. The brown-haired man pushed the door open a little further.

Riley wasn't visible, Chip assumed the teenager made himself invisible.

"How about we pull up the curtains and open the windows? You know? fresh air and light."

"You wouldn't dare."

"Well, okay, then not. But what about the newspaper? I think you'll be interested in this article."

"No."

"But–"

"No! Get out! Please..."

Chip closed the door again.

"Still not leaving the room?" Maggie asked, pointing to Riley's bedroom door.

Chip shook his head.

Riley decided not to leave the room three days ago.

Maggie and Chip seen Riley being homesick and missing their family before, but it never was this bad.

The couple slowly didn't know what to do anymore.

Riley just didn't want to do anything anymore. No matter what the two suggested, the teenager didn't leave the room.

"No," Chip shook his head. "They wouldn't even look at the newspaper."

"They haven't eaten the ice cream I brought them yesterday either."

Maggie sighed and looked at the door with furrowed eyebrows.

"Maybe the thing with the nursery wasn't such a good idea after all," Maggie murmured.

"You just asked what color we should paint the walls? I don't think–"

"Oh really, you think, Chip?" the young woman interrupted her husband.

"Believe it or not, but I do think, Maggie," Chip replied calmly.

"Sorry," Maggie sighed. "But what if they really think we're going to kick them out when the baby comes?"

Chip shook his head firmly.

"No, Riley is smarter than that. My guess is, they just miss their real family."

Maggie had to admit to herself that this was the logical alternative.

Even if Riley was already part of the family to both of them, the couple knew that the teenager already had one.

And part of them hoped that Riley would see the others again.

~~~~
Two days later, Maggie and Chip were sitting at the kitchen table.
"And when I'm back from work we–"
"Morning," Riley murmured as she entered the kitchen.
The teenager grabbed a cup from the cupboard, poured themself some coffee and sat down at the table with Maggie and Chip.
"Morning," Maggie said, a little surprised that Riley left the room.
Riley put a slice of bread on the plate and looked for the jam. They stopped, looked up, and met Maggie's and Chip's worried looks.
"I know, I wasn't well the last couple of days, but I decided that I am fine now," reported Riley and for them there was nothing left to talk about.
"You found an interesting newspaper article that I should read?" the teenager changed the subject.
"Yes, I did," said Chip. "But we threw it away, sorry."
He actually wanted to keep it until Riley was better, but Maggie was quicker than him and threw away all the newspapers from the last few days.
~~~~

On Tuesday, October 15th, Riley went shopping after work. On the way to the bus, they walked past a bookstore.

They stopped and took a closer look at the books in the window. One of them was a collection of Grimm's Fairy Tales (the children's versions) and Riley remembered their mom reading it to them and their siblings every time one of them was sick.

The cover even looked exactly the same.

Riley entered the store and picked up a copy of the book and flipped through the pages.

The teenager quickly decided to buy the book. They even asked the saleswoman to wrap the book as a gift– it would be a gift for Maggie and Chip's baby.

~~~~
"Riley, could you help me with the groceries," Maggie asked after lunch. "The bags are slowly getting too heavy for me."
"Of course. Did you want to go now or later?"
"Now would be great, then we'll be back before Chip gets back from work."
Riley nodded and put down today's newspaper (Friday November 15th).
On the way to the car, the teenager suggested driving, but Maggie politely declined.
She said she would "drive as long as she could." That and she didn't approve of Riley's driving style.
But Chip was already home when Riley and Maggie came back from shopping.
Maggie unlocked the door as Riley was holding both filled paper bags.
Riley went into the hallway first and put the groceries on the dresser.
"Chip," the young woman called to her husband after closing the door behind her.
Normally he always looked to see if he could help and Maggie was surprised that he didn't right now.
"In the living room," they heard Chip's voice.
Riley and Maggie looked at each other briefly and entered the living room together.
They were surprised to see that Chip wasn't alone and Riley stopped in their tracks when they realized who was sitting on the couch next to Chip.
"Five?"
"Hey there, stranger."
