Chapter 18

Riley and their siblings ran up the theater stairs.

Halfway, Allison grabbed Luther's arm, stopping him.

"Wha–"

She showed him another message.

'I need to go alone'

"Allison, I can't let you do that, all right? She's beyond reasoning."

Luther tried to walk past her, but Allison blocked his way.

"You hear the music? It's started," said Diego.

Riley hadn't heard of the music yet, at least until now.

And now that Riley could hear the music, they realized how talented Vanya was.

They knew she had to be good, but this was amazing.

"Do you honestly think she's going to listen? After everything that's happened?" Luther asked Allison.

"We don't have time for this," Klaus muttered, looking around.

"Okay," Luther finally said.

Allison nodded and walked off alone.

"You're using her as a distraction, aren't you?"

"Our best chance to incapacitate Vanya. She'll thank us later," Luther explained.

"Very good, Number One," said Riley.

They, Diego and Luther started moving.

"So, what's the plan?" Klaus wanted to know.

"Uh, you wait out front," Luther replied.

"What?"

"Yeah, you're the lookout."

"The lookout?"

Riley, Diego and Luther sneaked up to the stage from different sides.

The teenager waited for a sign and the three of them ran towards Vanya.

Their sister stood up and threw Luther and Diego off the stage with a wave of energy.

Now the audience also noticed that something was wrong.

They jumped up and all at once ran towards the door in panic.

The orchestra also wanted to leave, but with another wave of energy, Vanya ordered them to continue playing.

Vanya then launched another wave of energy at her siblings.

She also apparently had enough of her siblings' attempts to stop her and a bond of sorts appeared between her and Riley.

Because while the others were flying off the stage, it was as if Riley's feet were glued to the floor.

Vanya sent a wave of energy through Riley, forcing them to create one of their protective shields around the stage.

Allison, Diego and Luther sought shelter in the rows of chairs.

"She's stronger than expected," commented Diego.

"Yeah."

Allison threw the notebook at Luther.

"Yeah. We're fine, thanks for asking. Look, I almost lost you once, all right? I wasn't about to lose you again."

"Well, so much for the element of surprise. What else did you get?" Diego wanted to know.

Allison knocked on one of the chairs to get her brothers' attention.

The two men looked at her and she mimicked someone playing a violin.

"No shit, Allison. Tell us something we don't already know."

"She's talking about the violin. It's her lightning rod," explained Luther. "If we can take it from her and stop her from playing, we might have a shot."

He looked at the stage again, where Vanya was still playing the violin and Riley was slumping to the floor.

Their eyes glowed white, like Vanya's, and black veins ran down their arms.

"I don't think Riley will last much longer," Luther said.

"Shit," Diego hissed.

He wanted to jump up and get Riley off the stage, but at the same moment the men with the red gas masks appeared and thwarted his plans.

Diego, Luther and Allison continued to take cover between the rows of seats as the attack continued.

The other members of the orchestra now stood up in panic and ran off the stage to safety.

"What the hell happened to Klaus? He's supposed to be on lookout," Diego wanted to know.

"Yeah, you surprised?" Luther replied.

"What's with all the lollygagging?" Five wanted to know after he appeared next to the others.

"Five, get down!" Luther warned him and Five took cover next to his siblings.

"Five, what the... I thought you bailed on us!"

"I had an errand to ru…Where is Riley?"

"Yeah, about that–" Diego muttered.

Five followed his brother's gaze to the stage.

"Riley!"

Five tried several times to jump onto the stage to get Riley out of there.

But the protective shield threw him roughly back into the audience.

The third time he landed right next to Diego.

"This is not good," Five muttered, frantically trying to find a way onto the stage.

"You know these guys?" Diego asked Five and pointed to the guys with the red gas masks

"Yeah, I do."

"And?"

"Well... we're screwed."

"Guys, it's Cha-Cha!" Klaus shouted as he ran into the room. "It's Cha-Cha, she–"

"Klaus! Get down!"

Klaus also took cover.

Five jumped onto the back of one of the men. This one spun and the bullets hit two of the others.

At the same moment, Cha-Cha appeared in front of the stage. Which was a good reason for Diego to leave his hiding place and run towards her to put his revenge plan into action.

Meanwhile, Klaus summoned Ben.

He in turn summoned his 'friend' as Riley called the tentacle monster.

The Tenatel gradually wrapped around the group trying to kill the Hargreeves, picking them off one by one.

"Oh, my God. It's him. Ben," Luther murmured as he and the others realized that Klaus had been telling the truth from the start.

When the danger was over, Ben disappeared again.

"Now who's the lookout?" Klaus commented and couldn't help but laugh.

His gaze fell on the stage, which was still surrounded by a protective shield.

Five was standing in front of the stage again.

"Riley?" he said to his spouse. "Riley, do you hear me?"

They didn't.

"Riley, listen to me. We need your help okay? The Shield–"

Five sighed.

Riley didn't hear him, but he had to be able to get through to them somehow.

At that moment he remembered something.

When they were children, he and Riley found a way to communicate secretly (two whistles in a row) without Reginald noticing– they even use it to this day.

He whistled twice, hoping to get a reaction from Riley.

And it worked.

Riley looked up and looked straight at him.

"The Shield," Five repeated. "I need you to deactivate the Shield. Do you hear me?"

Riley blinked.

Five's mouth twitched upwards and he took another step closer to the stage.

"Everything will be okay, Love," the other teen assured Riley.

He reluctantly turned around and walked to his siblings.

"Oh, welcome back. Where were you?" Luther said to Diego, who was the last to join the group.

"Honoring a memory," the person addressed replied simply.

"So, how do you wanna end this thing?"

"First, we need to wait until Riley deactivates the Shield," said Five.

"Five, are you sure that's a good idea?"

The siblings glanced at the stage, where Vanya was about to end the concert and Riley was looking directly at the group.

"Yes," the teenager replied. "So, what then?"

"I'd say, we surround her. We come to her from all angles."

"So it's a suicide mission," Klaus muttered.

"Yeah, but one of us could get through. It's the only chance we've got."

"Are we all in?"

Five, Klaus and Diego denied.

"All right. Allison?"

Allison shook her head.

Unfortunately she didn't want to be a part of the plan and the brothers split up.

Luther from the left, Diego from the right and Five and Klaus waited at the front.

While the others remained at their assigned positions, Riley struggled to their feet.

Then Riley sent out their own energy wave and used it to destroy the protective shield.

The teenager stumbled forward and fell off the stage.

Five jumped and was able to catch Riley in the last moment

"I've got you, Love," Five murmured.

Klaus, Diego and Luther made sure Riley was okay before running towards Vanya.

But Vanya sent out another wave of energy, leaving her Brothers hanging in the air.

Before Five could help the others, a shot rang out across the room.

Because while Vanya was distracted by her brothers, Allison sneaked up on Vanya.

She initially aimed directly at the back of Vanya's head, but decided against it at the last moment and the bullet flew past Vanya's head.

She stumbled back and Allison caught her before Vanya fell to the ground.

Diego, Luther and Klaus fell back to the ground. They picked themselves up and climbed onto the stage.

"Is she alive?" asked Luther.

Allison nodded.

"Oh, thank God."

"We did it. We saved the world."

Five entered the stage, still with Riley in his arms, and joined the others.

"Is Riley okay?"

"Yes. They–"

Five stopped as Riley opened their eyes.

"Hi."

"Hi. What happened?" Riley asked.

"Oh, we just stopped the apocalypse," Five explained.

He let Riley down but continued to support them.

"Well, then."

Riley wanted to run a hand through their hair, but pulled the hand back when they saw their gray fingertips.

"What the–"

"Let me see it," Five said and carefully took Riley's hands.

"Uh... Guys?" Klaus addressed his siblings. "You see that big moon rock coming towards us?"

Riley and the others saw through the shattered glass dome of the room that a huge piece of the moon was coming straight towards them.

"That's not good."

"How?" she murmured.

She hadn't seen the energy beam that Vanya sent out after Allison pulled the trigger.

"So this is it, huh? So much for... saving the world."

"If only Sir Reginald could see us right now, huh? The Umbrella Academy. A total failure."

"At least we're together at the end. As a family."

"This doesn't have to be the end," Five objected.

"What? What are you saying, Five?"

"I think I have a way outta here. But you gotta trust me on this."

"Yeah, I don't think so."

"No."

"Guys," Riley rolled their eyes.

"Well, then, we might as well accept our fate, because in less than a minute, we're going to be vaporized," Five explained.

The others remained silent. They knew he was right.

"What's your idea?" Riley asked.

"We use my ability to time travel. But this time, I'll take all of you with me."

“You can do that?” Diego wanted to know.

"I don't know. I've never tried to travel with more than one other person."

"I could help," Riley suggested.

But Five shook his head. Riley couldn't use their abilities in this state. It was just too risky.

"What's the worst that can happen?"

"You're lookin' at it. Two 58-year-olds inside child's bodies, so there's that," Five replied.

"Oh, what the hell? I'm in."

"Yeah, whatever. I'm in."

"Me too. Allison?"

Allison nodded.

"What about Ben?" Luther asked Klaus.

Klaus turned to the side for a moment and replied: "Great, yeah, he's in."

"Okay, great. Luther, grab Vanya."

"Wait, should we be taking her?" Luther asked and picked Vanya up anyway. "I mean, if she's the cause of the apocalypse. Isn't that like taking the bomb with us?"

"The apocalypse will always happen And Vanya will always be the cause, unless we take her with us and fix her," Riley explained.

Then they stood in a circle and took each other hand.

Five used his power and created some kind of forcefield around him and his siblings.

It took a second but then the Hargreeves traveled back (in time).
