Chapter 17

After the sun completely disappeared, Five and Riley made their way back to the Academy.

But even from afar they realized that something was wrong.

Riley only stopped when the teenager was standing right in front of the ruins of the house where they and the others grew up– again.

Five stopped next to Riley a moment later and showed them the newspaper he suddenly had in his hand.

Riley glanced at the headline and realized they and Five made a mistake.

"Look," Five said and pointed to the house.

He saw the others and, luckily, they didn't seem okay, at least from a distance.

"Guys."

"Thank God, you're okay."

The couple made their way through the rubble and stopped at Allison, Luther, Diego and Klaus.

"This is it. The apocalypse is still on. The world ends today."

"I thought you said it was over."

"I was wrong, okay? This newspaper, I found it in the future the day Riley and I got stuck. The headline hasn't changed," Five explained.

"No, that doesn't mean anything," replied Diego. "The time could've been changed since that newspaper came out this morning."

"You're not listening to me. When I found it, I assumed this place came down along with everything else. But here we are. The Moon's still shining, the Earth is in one piece, but not the Academy."

"I'm confused," Klaus muttered.

He picked up the newspaper and looked at the pages.

"Then listen to me, you idiot!"

"Five!"

Riley's husband rolled his eyes, took a deep breath, before he continued.

"Vanya destroys the Academy before the apocalypse. I thought Harold Jenkins was the cause, but he was the fuse. Vanya is the bomb. Vanya causes the apocalypse."

In the distance, Riley heard sirens from several police cars and a helicopter.

"We have to find her."

Suddenly the helicopter was flying directly over the house.

"We gotta go, now."

"Regroup at the Super Star. Go!"

The group split up.

Five took Riley's hand and jumped.

~~~~
A short time later, Riley and the others sat in the 'Super Star Lanes' bowling area and discussed their next steps.
"Look, I hate to be the one to say this, but everyone needs to prepare," Luther began.
"For what?"
"To do whatever it takes to stop Vanya."
Riley looked at Luther in horror and Allison hit him in the arm with her small notebook.
"I... We may not have a choice, Allison," Luther defended himself.
"Bullshit. There's always options," said Diego and Riley nodded.
"Yeah, like what?" Five wanted to know.
"I don't know."
"Look, whatever we decide, we need to find Vanya. And fast, okay? She could be anywhere."
"Or...here," Klaus murmured. "Look at this."
He showed his siblings the page on which the advertisement for Vanya's concert was printed.
"That's right. Her concert is tonight."
"Hello," a voice came from behind Riley.
They turned around and looked at a young employee.
"I hate to intrude, but my manager says if you're not going to bowl, you gotta leave."
She pointed to a grim-looking man standing at the shoe counter.
"Whose turn is it?"
"Oh, for–"
Luther grabbed a bowling ball and threw it across several bowling lanes without looking.
Meanwhile, Allison wrote 'She's out sister' on the notebook.
"We're the only ones capable of stopping this."
"Luther, you are talking about Vanya, not some super villain."
"We have a responsibility to Dad–"
"To Dad?!" Diego repeated. "No, I've heard enough about–"
"He sacrificed everything to bring us back together."
"No. The old man killed himself, leaving it to Pogo to explain everything to us. After all, he is the one who had to explain himself to us," said Riley and got up from the chair.
"I'm with Luther on this one," Five spoke. "We can't give her a chance to fight back."
"I thought we went back to save our family," Riley turned to him.
They crossed their arms over their chest and looked at Five with a raised eyebrow.
"We are," Five assured and also stood up. "but there are billions of lives at stake."
"Vanya is family," Riley hissed, standing directly in front of Five.
"I never said anything else. But we don't have another choice. We're past trying to save just one."
"You. Are. Talking. About. Our. Sister," Riley repeated.
"Hey, you know, guys, uh… maybe I could help," Klaus spoke up and pushed Riley and Five away from each other.
"Now is not the time."
"No, let him finish," said Diego. "He saved my life today."
"Is that true?" asked Luther.
"Yeah, yeah, I did... take credit for it. In fact, the real hero... was Ben. Today... Listen. Today, he punched me in the face. And earlier at the house, he was the one who saved Diego's life, not me."
"You are unbelievable, Klaus."
"He's telling the truth," Riley explained. "I saw it myself. Ben punched him."
"You saw Ben?" asked Five.
Riley nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"There wasn't the right moment. I mean, I was really confused and then Klaus said–"
"Riley, we appreciate that you want–"
"You want proof, is that it? All right. I– I'll give you proof," interrupted Klaus Luther.
He reached for a bowling ball.
"All right, it's showtime, baby. Catch!"
He threw the bowling ball into the air, probably for Ben to catch.
But it landed on the ground with a loud thud.
"Is there any way to silence that voice in your head that screams out to be the center of attention?"
"You know, I like you a lot better
before you got laid," Klaus replied, immediately realizing his mistake when he saw Allison's expression.
"Which was a complete... It... It wasn't his fault, 'cause he was ridiculously high, right? And... And the girl, she thought he was a furry–"
"Stop."
"Okay."
Allison looked at Luther for a moment before turning and walking away.
"Allison, wait," Luther called and ran after her.
Riley reached for their lemonade and wondered why Allison was making a big deal about it.
After all, She had nothing to do with Luther's love life.
"Excuse me!"
A woman walking toward the rest of the group with her son interrupted Riley's thoughts.
"Excuse me, it's my son Kenny's birthday today, and wouldn't your children be happier playing with kids his own age? Assuming it's okay with your two dads."
"Oh, that's nice, but it's family–"
"I would rather chew off my own foot."
The woman and her son Kenny, both shocked from Fives reaction, disappeared back to Kenny's party.
"If I was going to date a man, you'd be the last man I would date," said Diego.
"You'd be lucky to get me. Ri, it's your turn."
Riley grabbed a bowling ball and threw it into the correct bowling lane (unlike Luther earlier).
And Riley hit every single one of the bowling pins.
The teenager smiled and turned around, expecting to see Five, but he wasn't sitting in the chair he was just moments ago.
Five stood off to the side and reread the message the Handler sent him a minute ago.
The message was written on a fortune cookie, so the little note said.
'TIME MARCHES ON… OR DOES IT?
Rain Quail, Rm 12'
He looked at Riley one last time and jumped.
~~~~

Since Five, Luther and Allison didn't return, Riley, Diego and Klaus continued playing alone.

And, of course, Riley won.

Diego was handing Riley the fries he bought them when Luther and Allison rejoined the others.

"All right, where’s Five?" Luther wanted to know.

"He left," Diego explained.

"Oh, for the love of... Where'd he go?"

"Didn't tell us," Riley said.

"Not even you?"

"Nope," Riley replied, frowning.

They wondered why Five hadn't said anything to them.

The two of them always said everything to each other, right? At least Riley thought so.

Wondering where Five was now, Riley stuffed another fry into their mouth.

"Well, we're not waiting around for him. The concert starts in 30 minutes," said Luther.

"All right, so what's the plan?" Diego wanted to know from his brother.

"Well, I think that, uh… We're going to the Icarus Theater."

"That’s a location, not a plan," commented Riley.

Luther opened and closed his mouth again and Riley could see him trying to come up with a plan.

"What? Is that all you got?" asked Diego. "Look, you wanna be Number One, fine, but you're gonna have to get us on the same page, because right now, we're all over the place."

"You're right. We need a plan."

The siblings saw the men with the red gas masks at the last moment.

"Get down!"

Riley and the others all took cover.

"Who the hell are these guys?"

"Maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday!" Klaus said, covering his ears.

"No, I'm pretty sure they're here for us!"

Riley powered up their shield and Diego and Luther started throwing bowling balls and knives at the men.

One of them tripped over the sound system and probably hit a few buttons, which activated the disco mode.

"Oh fuck this," Riley muttered.

They stood up and threw their fries at one of the men.

This in turn gave Klaus an idea and he threw Kenny's birthday cake at someone else.

"They're blocking the exit!"

"So, what's the plan now, Luther?"

Allison pointed to the bowling alleys and the others immediately knew what she meant– the back entrance.

"The lanes! Let's go!"

The siblings jumped up at the same time and ran down the bowling alleys.

Since Riley wasn't as fast as the others, Klaus put his hand on Riley's shoulder and carefully pushed them towards the exit.

~~~~
Five walked down the hall towards the door number 12.
The door was open, so he stopped for a moment.
"Five, come in. I've been waiting for you," he heard the Handler's voice.
He entered the room and closed the door behind him.
His eyes first fell on Agnes, who was sitting on a chair unable to move with tape covering her mouth.
"You must really like doughnuts," Five muttered.
"Help me," Agnes asked him through the tape.
Five sighed and turned to the Handler who was sitting on the couch.
"It's been a while," she said.
"Three days."
"For you, maybe. But for me, it's been a lot longer since we've seen each other."
"Well, you've had time to heal," Five said.
"Luckily, for both of us, time is the one thing my organization has an abundance of."
"Got your message, by the way. Nice packaging, but so much for Commission protocol."
The woman chuckled, stood up and walked towards Five.
"There have been a lot of changes since you and Riley left the Commission. You two really did some damage. The briefcases were all but destroyed, to say none of the highly trained personnel you killed. After all, what is an institution if not for–"
"What do you want?" Five wanted to know.
"To be happy. To have a simple... unfettered life, to do the work my superiors require. But... your being here, well, it complicates all that," the woman answered and sat down back down on the couch.
"Billions of people are about to die tonight. You can change that."
"Tonight, tomorrow. So little difference in the scheme of things. Don't you remember the Commission's raison d'être? What's meant to be is meant to be, or, as I like to say, que será, será."
"It’s bullshit in any language," replied Five. "Why did you call me here?"
"I want to offer you a choice. Everyone's going to die tonight, but… unlike the rest of the world, you have a way out. You can abandon your family and skip ahead to the apocalypse, take a walkabout for a few decades, but this time without Riley–"
The Handler stopped for a second, hoping to get a reaction from Five but he didn't move.
"– Wondering if I'll come back and offer you a job again, or you can stay here, with your family, and die a horrible death."
Five wished Riley was here. It would make things much easier.
But they weren't and it was his fault.
"While you weigh your options, just know your spouse and siblings are fighting for their lives without you."
"You brought me here to pull me away," Five realized and jumped to help his family.
"It's been nice knowing you, Five," said the Handler and poured some champagne into a glass.
