Chapter 16
"You know, it's rude not to let someone finish their sentence," Riley complained.
"It's Klaus and Diego. They'll get over it."
Riley rolled their eyes.
They and Five began searching the house for Vanya.
"No sign of Vanya," Five reported after the couple searched the whole house along with Diego and Klaus.
"She's not in any of the rooms."
"She's not downstairs, either."
"Well, I'm out," Diego explained.
He walked past the other three and Riley, Klaus and Five looked after him in surprise.
"Wait."
"Wait. Wait."
"Where are you going?" Riley wanted to know.
"Vanya's still out there, and so are Hazel and Cha-Cha," Five reminded his brother.
"I know," Diego replied and stopped for a moment. "I'm gonna get my things and then I'm outta here. I got some unfinished business with those fools."
As Diego walked away from his siblings, Riley wanted to say something, but decided against it.
"Hey, did Dad say anything about the apocalypse when you spoke to him?" Five addressed Klaus. "Any clues as to how it happened?"
"No. No clues. Truly terrific shave. But no clues."
"Well–" "Jeez," Riley and Five muttered at the same time.
Five stepped around Riley and walked down the stairs to the entrance hall.
"You know, come to think of it," said Klaus and followed the teenager down the stairs. "– he did mention something about my potential, and how I've barely even scratched the surface of my–"
"How did he know about the apocalypse?" Five asked loudly.
"I don't know, but listen. This whole jumping through time thing of yours, how did– How did you know how to do that?"
"I didn't," Five answered and paused briefly in the entrance hall. "You'd realize that if you were actually sober."
"Hey, I'm sober," Klaus defended himself. "I've been sober for two… almost two days now."
Five, who had almost crossed the room, turned to his brother.
"Yeah, two days."
"It feels like 45 years."
"Who are you kidding, Klaus? I've seen you fidgeting all day."
"Well, I guess we're both fighting our addictions, then," Klaus replied.
"I'm not an addict."
"Yeah, you are. You're addicted to a drug called the apocalypse."
"You're wrong."
"First sign. Denial," said Klaus.
He turned around, but for Five the conversation wasn't over yet and he jumped right in front of Klaus.
"You and I, we're not the same."
Klaus chuckled.
"I've seen that look in the eye of someone who doesn't know who they are without their high anymore. Trust me. You gotta just let it go."
Five and Klaus looked at each other in silence for a moment before Five threw the glass eye against the wall, causing it to break into a small shards.
Then Five left the room.
"Figuratively, but yeah, that works, too," Klaus said as Riley came down the stairs.
The teenager sighed and stopped next to Klaus.
“Always so dramatic,” Riley commented.
"One day at a time," Klaus murmured. "You should probably check, if he's alright."
"He needs a second for himself," Riley explained. "Are you okay?"
"Of course. I'm always okay."

Five sat at the bar and two glasses of very lightgreen liquid stood in front of him.
Each glass contained a straw and a small decorative paper umbrella.
Riley sat down next to their husband and Five pushed the glass with the yellow umbrella towards Riley and drank from the one with the blue umbrella.
"Yours is without alcohol," Five explained.
"Thanks," Riley smiled.
For a few minutes the couple sat together in comfortable silence– well, not quite silence, as the radio quietly played jazz music.
"Love, do you think we really did it? Like actually stopped the apocalypse?"
"Seems like it," Riley shrugged. "Now what?"
"I don't know," Five chuckled. "I'm open to suggestion."
"We'll find something," Riley said and took a sip. "But for now... we could, you know, start living a normal life."
"You mean stuff like getting a job at some boring office? Buying a house? Attending Sunday night family dinners?"
Riley nodded: "It kinda sounds nice."
The teenager poked the drink with the straw and the thought of a white fence and a dog popped up in their head.
Five grimaced slightly. Even though the two will spend their second chance together, he still couldn't imagine an ordinary life.
They both heard a knock at the door.
"I'll get it," said Five.
He stood up and opened the door, his drink still in his hand.
Hazel stood in front of the door and aimed his gun at the teenager.
"Hey, old-timer."
"Do you have my sister?" Five wanted to know, not caring about the gun. "And if not, would you like a margarita?"
Hazel didn't answer right away and Five turned around to go back to the bar.
"Come on."
Hazel followed him and Five sat back down on one of the bar stools next to Riley.
"You're here to kill us?" Riley asked with a raised eyebrow and pointed at Hazels gun.
"Oh. Shit. Sorry. Old habits," the man apologized and put the gun away. "Well, I can understand why you might feel that way, you know..."
"Well, you attacked our house, tried to kill our family, and kidnapped our brother."
"Well, there's not much I can do about the past–"
"It hasn't even been a week," Riley said.
"Okay listen, I'm not the only killer in this room. You both got your own bloody history," replied Hazel.
Riley cocked their head. The man in front of them was right.
None of them was in the position to judge each other.
"Speaking of which, that job you did in Calhoun, that shit's legendary. Can't believe I'm actually sittin' here talkin' to you, after all–"
"It was teamwork," Five interrupted Hazel. "But why are you here?"
"Well, I'm, you know..."
Hazel didn't had the time to explain.
Diego appeared out of nowhere and attacked the other man.
"Diego, stop!"
"You know, before you kill him, you might wanna hear what he has to say."
Hazel kicked the other man and Diego stumbled back.
He caught himself and pulled out one of his knives.
"I'm going to kill you for what you did to Patch," Riley's brother threatened and attacked Hazel another time.
"– Or don't. See how that goes."
"Hey, wanna bet on how this ends?" Riley whispered.
Five chuckled and at the same moment Diego plunged the knife into Hazel's leg.
The couple inhaled sharply.
"That's gotta hurt," Five commented and Riley nodded.
The fight ended when Diego bit Hazel's ear.
Five handed Riley his glass. He jumped and grabbed a vase to put around Diego's head.
Diego collapsed to the ground.
"I drew the line at biting," Five explained. "Hazel, whatever you came here to say, I suggest you make it quickly, before he comes round."
"I left my partner, quit the Commission, came to volunteer," Hazel reported.
"For what?" Riley asked, handing Five his glass back after he sat down next to them again.
"To help stop the apocalypse.”
Riley and Five chuckled.
"What on earth could be so funny to you right now?"
"Before one of us answers that, why do you want to help us?"
"Let's just say I have a vested interest in a donut shop," Hazel gave an imprecise answer.
It took a moment for Riley to understand what he meant and a small smile appeared on their face.
"Oh…"
"Well, I hate to break it to you, pal, but you're a day late and a dollar short. The fact that you're here right now means, without a shadow of a doubt, that the apocalypse is over", Five explained to the other former hitman.
"Really? How do you know?"
"The mark is dead. Found him this morning. You were the last known unknown left in the equation."
"Shit. Really?"
"Mm-hmm. And if you're out, then Hellrider ain't riding."
"Oh! All right," said Hazel happily.
While they were still drinking the glass, Riley placed it on the bar.
They giggled at Hazel's sudden good mood and stood up.
"I'll be right back. I'll just get a hand brush for the broken vase," said the teenager and left the room.
Meanwhile, Hazel sat down on one of the other chairs.
He grabbed the mixing cup and drank the rest of the margarita that was still in it.
"So now what?"
"You know, to be honest, I don't know. I've been chasing this thing for so long, I… I never really thought about the day after. Riley did, apparently", Five mumbled and let out a chuckle, before he continued. "I don't know. What about you?"
"I'm done with all this madness. Time to start over. You should do the same," advised Hazel.
"That's easier said than done."
"It doesn't have to be hard. I mean, think about it like this. If you never time traveled, you never got caught up with the Handler, what would have happened?"
Five glanced at his brother, who was still lying unconscious on the floor.
"I guess I would have grown up to be an emotionally stunted man-child like everybody else around here."
"Well, there you go. Now you can grow up," said Hazel.
He started to get up, but then paused again.
"Last question. Did Riley include you in their plans?"
"Yes, I think so."
"Well then, no need to be worried," replied the older one. "Good luck."
Hazel stood up and walked through the room towards the door until Five spoke to him one last time.
"Hazel. One more thing before you go."
"Shoot."
"Which one of you was the trigger man for Detective Patch?"
"Trigger woman," Hazel replied.
"Huh. That's too bad. That gun could have cleared my brother's name."
"Well, today's your lucky day, amigo."
Hazel put his and Cha-Cha's gun on the bar counter.
"Take 'em both. I'm done with this life," Hazel said goodbye, leaving Five lost in thought.
A few steps from the front door, Hazel met Riley, who was walking back to the bar with a hand brush in their hand.
"Bye, Hazel," Riley said goodbye.
"Goodbye, Riley."

Riley was finishing their second (non-alcoholic) margarita when Diego woke up.
"Good, you're up," Five commented.
“You okay?” Riley wanted to know.
"Ready for a drink now?"
Diego didn't answer, he just jumped up and looked around expecting Hazel somewhere.
"Where is he?"
"I let him go," Five explained.
"You what?"
"Now that the apocalypse is over, it's time for the fighting to stop."
Diego still didn't listen and picked up his knife.
"Hey, he didn't kill Patch. His partner Cha-Cha did," Riley told him.
"So what? They were both there that night."
"This half of the partnership gave me both of their guns," said Five. "Which will clear you, because the ballistics will match Patch's crime scene."
Diego's gaze fell from Riley and Five to the guns and stayed there.
"Hazel came here looking for a way out. He wanted a fresh start," Riley added.
"And he happened to have in his possession the one thing that could do our family a little good. So it's time to move on."
"Not a chance."
The pair looked at each other for a moment before Five put his Glas on the counter.
"Suit yourself," said the teenager.
He stood up and held out his hand to Riley.
Five's other half was also standing up from their bar stool.
They smiled at him and took his hand.
"I am curious," Five addressed Diego again. "Your girlfriend, Patch. What did you like about her?"
"A lot of things. Cute butt. Nice legs."
Riley rolled their eyes and Five asked: "Anything a little more profound than that?"
"She believed in people. No matter how much shit and filth she saw on the streets. She always saw the good inside."
"She sounds like a great person," said Riley.
"She was," Diego murmured.
"Well, I'm sure she'll be proud to know that you're killing Hazel and Cha-Cha as a way to honor her memory."
Five motioned for Riley to accompany him and together they left the room.

"Where are we going?" Riley wanted to know.
Five covered Riley's eyes with one hand and led them a few steps further with the other.
"One second… and we are… there."
The time traveling teenager removed his hand from Riley's eyes.
Riley's eyes take a second to adjust to the light.
"Five, why are we on a roof?"
"Because it's the perfect place to watch the sunset."
"The sunset?" Riley repeated, irritated.
Five nodded and pointed in the direction in which the sun disappeared below the horizon at the same moment.
"Wow," Riley murmured and the two watched the sunset.
"You know, we have always been an unusual couple," Five interrupted the silence.
"What?"
"Just a thought," Five cleared his throat. "This isn't easy for me, love, and I… I want you to know that I cherish every single minute I ever shared with you, all and a half million of them– as friends and as a couple. It's a lifetime."
Riley was kinda speechless.
It wasn't often that Five would put his feelings into words. And Riley cherished it every single time.
"Now look at us," the teenage boy said. "We're lucky enough, we get another lifetime together."
"Yeah," Riley whispered.
They turned back to the setting sun and discreetly wiped away the tear in their eye.
"Thank you for showing me this. This is beautiful," Riley commented on the sunset.
"You're right. Really beautiful," said Five, looking at Riley
