Chapter 38 Lawrence

Sam settled in beside Mason, still not feeling herself as she started to come down from her essence high. Jack pulled Joseph to his office with myself and Nate following. I was exhausted, but without answers there was no way I would get any sleep. House quieting down, the men they left behind to clean up at the clearing had finished and were headed home. Now was the best time to get the answers from Joseph. Behind his desk, ankles crossed, fingers entwined resting over his solid abs, Jack waited for Joseph to start.

Deflating on the couch rubbing his hands down his face and muffled, "So what do you want to know?" Joseph asked.

"The beginning would be nice start, but I am tired so give me the highlights for now," Jack responded.

Nodding his head, Joseph, sat back on the couch. "Ok. I'm a born not a bitten or made, whichever you prefer, and as far as I now I am the only one. My father told me I had two brothers but they are not like me, but I believe they are shifters and I also have a human sister," Joseph began to explain.

"That explains the scent," I said from the corner watching Joseph, keeping my inner thoughts off my face.

"So your mother was able to carry you full term, how?" Jack asked.

"Yes. She stayed in her wolf form. She...passed shortly after I was born. From what my father told me his first two sons were twins and he had them when he was human. Around a hundred years ago my father was changed. A few years after I was born. When I hit puberty every full moon became intense until my 16 birthday when I had my first complete change. Anyways after that my father started to train me and that is how I know so much about Sam and why I am the only one that can train her," he said with conviction.

"Hold on. You need to back up. What does your father know about any of what Sam is?" Jack cut in.

Joseph stood and began to pace. "He is like Sam. He is a Tlazolteotl and a wolf. That is what I know for sure...but there is more to him. After scenting Sam, after her change, my father had the same distinctive scent. You are the first ones I have ever told this to and the only reason I am is because of Sam. My Alpha never knew. Oh he knew I was different but was too into himself to look more into it. He just took my ability to heal the ones I became intimate with as a freak of nature. He used it to his advantage, I am glad he never knew years ago." He shook his head in disgust.

I knew this was one topic that needed more time to get into but now I just wanted the highlights. This new information was even more involved than I thought. "Where is your father now?" Hearing about a male Tlazolteotl was interesting and what he could teach Sam and us was truly fascinating. At the same time scary as all hell, one of them could do damage; two could destroy the world. Now having the son of one that was a born, and him here with us and with Sam made it made me even more nervous than before.

"I...the last time I seen him was 30 years ago. Five years ago I received a letter from him and that was how I learned about my sister and that she was human and knew about us. He wrote that she was safe with a pack in Vancouver. He doesn't stay in one place to long because of the effect he has on the female shifters. It kills him to leave. But unlike Sam, he has not found a mate or have grown feelings for anyone more than their natural ability to care for the shifters and feel at home with them." Joseph said with a faraway look in his eyes.

"Sam has not found a mate," I said defensively.

Before Joseph could answer, Jack jumped in. "How old are you? And is there any way to get a hold of your father?" Jack asked.

Already shaking his head Joseph answered, "No. No, I don't know where he is, and I don't think it would be a good idea to have him here." He looked a little pale.

Jack sighed, exhaustion eating at him, "Please Joseph, just tell us so we can get to bed."

Standing up and starting to pace Joseph explained, "The last time I seen him, spent time with him, he was not the same. He liked the power he holds over a pack. As far as I know he has not done anything wrong, but I know he grows bored. It angers him seeing mated pairs because he has not yet found anyone. Not just anyone but someone that is strong," he looked back and forth between Jack and myself. "Like I said before, Sam is the only other like my father. I fear that if he knew she existed he would be he in a heartbeat."

I pushed myself away from the wall, moving into the middle of the room. "So what, you think he would want her?"

Joseph gave me a serious look then asked, "Don't you? Don't at least half of your unmated males feel more for her then just the need to protect her? I don't know what would happen if they met, but I can imagine. Each of them attract the opposite unmated pairs. They are both officially unmated and even if they were not I don't know if it would make a difference. They are close to be one in the same. So I figure the attraction will be too strong to fight, which would give them more power over any shifter they meet. Or nothing could happen at all.

"I know neither of you trust me but you have to know I would do anything for Sam. And that includes keeping her and my father from ever meeting," he was standing tall in the middle of the room, looking at both leader and alpha.

Jack had had enough for one night. "OK, Joseph go find a bed and we will talk more about it tomorrow," he dismissed him.

"Well, it sure has been more interesting since Sam moved here," I said thrusting my hands in my dishevelled hair with a chuckle.

Jack had to laugh at that than sobered. "You know when others find out about her things may get even crazier. And we have to talk to her about this and the fact she will always need guards around her till things come down."

He was right. "Did you notice, or was it just my shock that she could change into both forms, that she was able to refuse both our commands? And we need to see how far this communication she is able to do reaches. Can we do it not in our animal form? Also, does Sam need to be around or is that the way it is now? I'm...I'm going to go check on the injured and then head home. I will talk to you tomorrow." I left, leaving even more questions unanswered.

"Actually Lawrence I have pack business but would like you to stay if you can spare a few more minutes," Jack asked before he turned to Nate. You heard Alexis. What is this about her and Dmitri becoming mates and taking over the pack?"

I wasn't the only one shocked. Nate was, I think, more surprised on the question. I was more surprised that he brought this up with me in the room. Yes I was there and heard everything and I did wonder but there was more important things to worry about. Like Sam.

"Jack I swear to you that was the first time I heard either. Sure I knew him and Alexis screwed around a bit but I was pretty sure it was more out of boredom than anything else. I do know for a fact that if he wanted to be your second he could be but he doesn't. He wants nothing to do with the politics. He is your muscle and likes it that way. I could snoop around if you like." You would have to be blind not see the that the last part bothered him but he would do it. He believed in his brother. Fromm what I knew of Dmitri I would have a hard time believing he wanted to move up in the pack.

Jack sighed and rubbed his face with his hands. We were all mentally and physically exhausted. "That is how I see things as well. No, I will talk to himself. I could not let a statement like that go unattended too. Thanks Nate, go home to Mady. Thanks for staying."

With that done Nate left and I followed right behind him. It had been a long couple of days and I still had to check in on Sam and my injured.
