I Can Explain
Although Jackson and BamBam would have loved to stay to watch the reunion, they knew that it was best to the leave the couple alone. They had a room booked at the Oceanside hotel, and many... activities, planned.
WeiZhou walked away from Jingyu, wanting him to calm down before he continued. He filled the kettle up with water, putting it on the stove for tea. Jingyu was still standing in the doorway, staring at WeiZhou. Yes, he was the same old ZhouZhou... but... how?
"Don't just stand there." Zhou said, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms. "You can come in, if you want."
Jingyu stepped forward, looking around as he did. It was a tiny place, actually. The downstairs area only had a kitchen and a living room, both in the same area, so it wasn't unusual for WeiZhou to sit on the couch and eat his dinner. Jingyu imagined him in an oversized hoodie and boxer briefs, eating popcorn and watching a movie. Then, he snapped out of his thoughts and stared at real WeiZhou, who was the same WeiZhou who appeared in all his fantasies over the last year, except for one thing. This WeiZhou was alive, has been alive. Living a whole different life.
WeiZhou smiled at Jingyu sadly. "I'm... sorry." He said, putting his arms down so he looked less threatening. "I... I wanted to get away. From everything. China, all the fans, travelling, my manager." He shrugged. "To be honest, I wanted to get away from you too."
"I know why." Jingyu said. He felt like a kicked puppy. "I was an ass."
"You were a total ass." WeiZhou grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "I missed you though. I also didn't want you to know where I was. I was hoping you would just move on, like you did when we were dating. I just wanted you to let go of me. But then Jackson got so worried about you... I just... I didn't want you to kill yourself because of me."
Jingyu nodded, watching WeiZhou's hands as they moved to pour him a cup of tea. He handed it to Jingyu and smiled. "WeiZhou, the days you were gone were the most loneliest days of my life. I could have went out and found another but I didn't. Do you want to know why?"
WeiZhou stared into those eyes. Those eyes he had first met on the Addicted set, those eyes that coaxed him into intoxication, those eyes his heart recognized from lightyears before, even though he had never seen the man before. Jingyu continued to speak. "ZhouZhou, I knew I fucked up the moment I woke up alone. I made the biggest mistake of my life, trying to leave you." Jingyu put the cup of tea down, stepping closer to WeiZhou.
WeiZhou took a step back, confused by his own feelings. On one hand, he missed Jingyu more than anything else, and wanted him back so the life of Jackson and Bam would be much easier to live. On the other hand, he wanted to keep the same life in Mangsang without Jingyu. Without anybody.
Jingyu's lips tightened, seeing WeiZhou move away from him. "What's wrong with you?"
"What?"
"Why are you moving away, ZhouZhou." Jingyu whined, moving forward once again. Zhou backed up, showing his strength. He knew at the time he was much more headstrong that Jingyu, and he refused to give in. He felt the arm of the couch press into the back of his thighs.
"Jingyu, let's face it." He looked down, at the floor, then back up, trying to avoid those eyes. WeiZhou knew that as soon as he looked into those eyes he would be done for. "It can't work out between us anymore."
Jingyu's face darkened. "What... what do you mean?" He asked, eyebrows creasing.
"You and I.... it doesn't work. You're an amazing actor and model and I'm a dead man. I'm not Timmy Xu anymore." He was being honest. "Jingyu, I work in a restaurant, okay? I live here. This place has less square feet than our old apartment. Every morning I run to the beach and back, and I look after stray cats when they come to my door." He sighed, leaning against the couch and running a hand through his hair. "I can't be seen in Beijing. And it's too far and expensive for you to fly all the way here constantly. I mean, we don't even have an airport in Mangsang."
Jingyu's heart skipped a beat when he heard WeiZhou say 'we', meaning, at least to Jingyu, that he was part of this town now.
"It's gonna be harder, yeah." Jingyu said, not moving any closer. He knew his ZhouZhou. He was like a cat. With careful coaxing and gentle names, he would come out of his hiding place. "It's gonna be tough, but... what is love without struggle?" He smiled, but it was small, much smaller than usual.
"Jingyu... I... I don't know." He shook his head. "I wanted you to know that I'm alive. All I want.... all I ever want is for you to be happy." Slowly, he reached his hand out, pulling Jingyu's up and gazing at it. The veins that stood out on the back of his hand were prominent and his fingers were satisfyingly long and bony.
"When I'm with you, I'm happy." Jingyu said, trying to catch WeiZhou's eyes. The younger man stared at his hand like it was a lifeline, smoothing his fingers over Jingyu's knuckles lightly. Then, finally, he looked up.
"Are you sure?" He met Jingyu's eyes, his breath leaving his chest. "I mean, we're so far away. We both live separate lives now."
Jingyu shrugged.
"I know that." He put his other hand on top of the one WeiZhou was holding. "I also know that I love you, more than anything, ZhouZhou." WeiZhou smiled slightly.
"We're doing this then?"
Jingyu let go of his hands, stepping closer and placing his hands on Zhou's waist. This time, WeiZhou didn't step away. "Yeah, we're doing this." And then, their lips met and the world faded away.
