Chapter 9
"I'm going to go take a walk to the park," I told Madi and Dad as I slipped on my white converse high tops and grabbed my backpack.
Dad acknowledged my proclamation with a simply nod, so I swiftly exited the house before I was interrogated. A part of me hated the outdoors, especially in the fall. The chilly air that made my fingers and toes ache for warmth caused me to grow irritated. I tried to like autumn, I really did, but it just was not an ideal. I sucked up my strong dislike for the weather and walked out to the park.
"Hey." Ethan smiled as I spotted him waiting for me by the side of the curb next to the small park in our neighborhood.
"Hi." I responded pulling up my tank top uncomfortably. I looked back at him awkwardly and continued walking silently until we reached the mini bridge.
"So, um, I need to ask you something-it's pretty important-but yeah. " Ethan informed as he shyly dug around in his jeans pocket.
"Oh okay, I kind of figured you had to talk to me about something when I received your text. What is it?" I asked worriedly as I examined Ethan's posture and facial expressions.
Then out of the blue Ethan surprised me with an invite to homecoming.
"Linnea Clementine, will you come to homecoming with me?" Ethan asked, kneeling down on his right knee as he held out a beautiful diamond necklace for me in his hands.
"Oh my god," I squealed as I gazed into his soulful eyes,"Of course!" I exclaimed as I ran and hugged him tightly around his neck.
"I thought you would be happy when I asked you, but here, look at this." He demanded as he handed me the necklace box from Kesslers that he had in his hand before. My gaze dropped once I opened up the small box.
"Oh, Ethan, this is such a beautiful and exquisite necklace!" I gaped as I carefully reopened the tiny little purple box that he handed to me. I slowly lifted the necklace from its dormant position.
"Yep, I bought it just for you." Ethan smiled as I pulled him in for another long hug, "obliviously." He added, his deep masculine voice ringing in my ears as he spoke.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I replied in awe as I slipped the lovely necklace around my neck.
I literally could not believe I was just asked to homecoming by Ethan Coon! To be honest, I seriously thought he was going to ask Becca but apparently I was wrong. On the other hand, this necklace seemed too good to be true. Actually, it screamed more of a "will you marry me?" kind of thing rather than a simple homecoming proposal.
I bit my lip lightly and unlatched the necklace from my neck for a moment. I needed a moment to process this whole thing. Ethan gave me a funny stare, so I knew I had to clarify.
"Ethan, I hate to admit it, but I feel like the necklace is too much. What about a simple sign like all the other kids? A catchy saying or whatnot."
"Oh gosh, I know." He sighed, putting a hand to his face in disgrace. "I just thought I would be a bit more formal than the average person. You know how I am . . . think out of the box!" He exclaims with an awkward laugh.
I smile at him and wrap my arms around his neck. No matter what he gave me or how he acted, I loved him more than anything.
Later that day we took a walk through the small, scenic pathway to the the ocean. Thankfully, the North Carolina air smelled like summer now; I was not ready for the cold to come yet. I thought it was comical how only a couple of hours ago the wind pointed all signs at fall.
I glanced up at the huge maple trees swaying in the breeze with the grass. A few young teenage boys were screwing around on the playground while a clique of girls sat on the slide, popping their gum as they gave flirtatious smiles at the boys.
As we were about to turn onto the grassy path, I heard a quick rustle in the leaves. Ethan and I shot a curious look at each other before we heard a young boys's voice erupt from behind us.
"What are those?" Ben screeched, jumping from behind the ledge. He stood there making a strange face and looking at Ethan's shoes.
"Oh my God, Ben what the hell do you think you are doing? You are so freaking stupid," Ethan groaned," and just so you know, these are a pair of customized Nike shoes," Ethan retorted giving him a you-are-so-annoying look.
Ben laughed heartily at his response, "Are you oblivious to everything going on social media right now?" Ben asked, still feeling slightly offended by Ethan's response.
Ben took out his phone from his sweatshirt pocket and started texting someone. I could see his thumbs doing what I call,"The texting dance."
Ethan brushed his wispy brown bangs out of his face and answered Ben's question," Yeah, actually, I do." Ethan replied flatly as he fumbled through his pocket to try and find his phone. He typed in his secretive password and continued onto his phone, where he opened the app.
I stood there not knowing what to do or say so I just leaned over Ethan's shoulder to watch him. He was scrolling through a list of videos, videos that I have not seen myself on vine. I mean, needless to say, I don't go on vine that much anyway to be honest.
That felt very awkward since I was not asked to be a part of any of it, so I kept watching Ethan play around on the app for a few seconds.
"Okay look at this." Ben put in showing Ethan and I this weird video on his phone.
"Omg like.." This guy said on the video," WHAT ARE THOOOSSEE??" The other man stared him down for a moment and then walked away.
"Hahahahahaha." Ethan and Ben laughed in unison as they began showing each other more stupid vines.
It really was not that funny to be honest. I decided to take out my phone and show them a super hilarious vine.
"Hey guys, look at this vine." I piped taking out my new iPhone 6s and showing them an adorable and funny vine.
"Bad um, Bud um, Ba dum, Ba dum, Lollipop, Lolllipop, oh Lolli, Lolli, Lolli, Lollipop! Bad um Bad um bad um." The cat was licking the lollipop to the beat of that song, which I thought was extremely hilarious.
I couldn't stop laughing for at least full two minutes while everyone just looked at me as if they had seen a ghost.
Ethan and Ben looked super confused at the vine I had just shown them.
I ended up just shrugging it off and casually sliding my phone back into my jeans pocket.
Some people just don't have the best sense of humor I guess.
