XV
Spring break had just started
and we just finished playing
our last game for the week.
We lost by 2 runs,
but that was okay.
At least,
I thought it was okay.
Most of the other girls didn't.
We could've won that,
Peyton frowned,
muttering swear words
under her breath
before throwing her bag on her back
and grabbing the helmets.
Virginia looked sad at the loss, too.
But I just stayed indifferent,
silent.
I was walking off the bus and down the road
when she stopped me.
Hey,
Virginia breathed.
I glanced up at her
and flashed her a small smile.
Hey,
I replied
as I readjusted my bag.
I was wondering.
Did you want to hang out tomorrow?
She plucked at invisible hairs on her shirt.
It would be fun.
We could watch a movie and go shopping
if you want.
Maybe eat some lunch or dinner or whatever.
Though surprise consumed me at the offer,
I pretended as if it wasn't one of the first times
that someone asked me to hang out with them.
Just the two of us,
no team bonding,
no family reunions,
just us.
As friends maybe.
A friend.
This thought made me smile,
and I said,
Sure. What time?
My answer made her grin widen.
We can go at around 2 if you want.
I paused.
And how will I meet you?
I don't have a car.
Virginia just shook her head.
I'll give you a ride.
Are you walking home now?
She asked,
and I nodded.
Do you want me to drive you now?
Just so I'll know where to pick you up?
It was silent for a moment as I looked up at her.
Her face was adorned with a smile
and her eyes glistened from the sun's rays.
Are you sure it won't be out of your way?
I asked.
Of course not!
It's perfectly fine.
Taking another questioning glance in her direction,
I hesitantly nodded before following her.
Her car was a dark purple color,
and as I opened the passenger side door,
I saw that the tan leather seats inside it were ripping apart.
A part of her dashboard was beaten through,
and her front seat was missing
a great chunk of cushion at the foot area.
Sorry. It's not the best car,
but it was the only one I could afford.
I rose my eyebrow at her statement.
Don't worry about my opinion.
I don't even have a car.
This made her laugh,
and pretty soon after strapping in my seat belt,
we were on our way.
I gave her directions as she drove,
and barely anytime later,
she pulled up in front of my house.
Thanks,
I muttered before stepping out of her car.
And as I shut the car door and made my way to the front door,
Virginia's voice pierced the air.
I'll see you later!
A small smile graced my face at this,
and not a moment later,
she drove off down the road.
