XLII
I sat in my room the rest of the morning
hands turning white from clutching onto my phone.
I ignored the pounding on my front door
and the distant yells of Virginia's voice.
I was already too far gone.
Dried tears stiffened my cheeks,
my throat ached from trying to hold the tears back,
and my fingers cramped from it's current position.
The yelling and pounding stopped.
It was silent
and I could hear every whisper in my mind
and feel every jolt in my body.
I was now on autopilot.
My fingers gingerly opened up the crumpled slip of paper
before I dialed Lucas' number.
My body was shaking
as I took in uneven breaths
and let out uneven whimpers.
Hello?
His deep voice cut through the phone
in confusion.
I dug my fingers into my palms
nearly drawing blood
as the air around me kept climbing in temperature.
Hey, Luke.
I whispered.
It's Sarah.
I took in a deep breath as I tightly shut my eyes.
Can you come get me?
My voice cracked
as the flood of tears escaped behind my eyelids.
His words weren't comprehensible
and my mind was in overdrive.
All I knew was,
just moments later,
I was driving away from my house
with a note taped to the counter
and my luggage in the back seat of Lucas' car.
~Sarah
