IX
As the last bell rang,
signaling the end of school,
I signed out of my school account
and left the classroom.
Trying to walk invisibly through
the waves of students emptying the halls,
I was quite surprised when someone grabbed my elbow.
Startled,
I looked back to see Virginia.
Hey, where were you at lunch?
I furrowed my eyebrows at her question.
Why would she want to know?
I'm pretty sure she wasn't feeling lonely
considering the swarm of excited animals
hungry for a new piece of meat
to take into their homes--
or rather their beds.
I was doing homework.
I answered,
uncertainty still laced in my voice.
Why?
I asked,
only to make her smile widen.
There's softball tryouts tomorrow.
You should come tryout with me.
I paused.
I haven't played softball in a long time.
Or at least,
since I met Daniel.
She only laughed
and told me to come anyway.
I have an extra glove you can borrow.
Are you a righty?
Slowly,
I nodded my head.
Awesome.
She grinned.
It's at six in the morning in the main gym.
See you then.
And before I could express my disbelief,
she was gone.
And the next thought that entered my mind was:
she must be crazy,
and I must be crazier for actually thinking about going.
