His body became rigid, and his emotions suddenly fluctuated unnaturally, his eyes widening in shock and horror at the man appearing within his eyesight's range.
"M-Ms Skye.." The defence attorney trembled, glancing at her with glassy eyes filled with terror; unshakable terror.
"MS SKYE...!" He clutched her arm tightly all of a sudden.
"What..? Was it something I said?" She blinked in confusion at the trembling defence attorney who was now attempting to slip off of the bed, but was immediately stopped by the forensic scientist;
"Now now, you know you shouldn't be straining your body after-"
"YOU CAN'T LET HIM NEAR ME! PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU!" Tears were now streaming down his bruised cheeks as he pleaded, his heart beating so rapidly that it was out of control.
"What? A minute ago you were saying how much you loved the man! What the hell are you talking about?"
"PLEASE! Y-YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND... H-HE..." Phoenix squirmed beneath the blanket, unable to sit still, with a panicked expression upon his face.
"What's all the commotion?" Edgeworth appeared at the doorway all of a sudden, causing the defence attorney to have a mini heart attack as he clung to Ms Skye for dear life.
"M-MS SKYE... Y-YOU CAN'T LET HIM T-TAKE ME..." Phoenix slowly, carefully, edged away by sliding backwards upon the bed until he was practically hanging off of the end. Edgeworth stared blankly at his boyfriend's reaction to seeing him, feeling slightly queasy.
"Ms Skye, what is the meaning of this, dare I ask...?" Ema widened her eyes, darting glances at the pair of then, as she noticed how purely genuine the defence attorney's fear was. He was quaking like an earthquake.
"I don't really know, sir..." She had a forlorn look on her face as she watched the prosecutor advance towards Phoenix, whom bore various beads of sweat upon his forehead as his breaths became faster, shallower.
"N-NO! STAY AWAY FROM ME!" The defence attorney cried out, tears streaming down from his cheeks as Edgeworth came to the foot of the bed, frowning.
No, he wasn't going to give in. Not just yet.
"Wh-What a-are y-you..." Phoenix whispered shakily, hugging the 'special' thermal-reflector blanket around him, watching the prosecutor as he reached out to touch his pale cheek.
"NO! GET AWAY FROM ME, Y-YOU MONSTER!" The defence attorney screamed, hurriedly pushing himself off of the bed and chucking the blanket upon the floor, trying his best to dodge Ema - who was attempting to block his way out of the van - in order to escape. The prosecutor watched him with slowly trailing pupils, not showing any emotion.
Unable to show any emotion.
The panicked air around him, the wild, frantic eyes, the sudden screaming as he saw him... Was this man even Phoenix anymore?
"Phoenix... What's wrong? What have I done to make you be like this?" Edgeworth's brows creased in a sorrowful manner, his voice thick with emotion. It had all been for nothing, hadn't it? Phoenix didn't love him anymore, did he?
"Y-YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE..!" The defence attorney whimpered, slumping against Ema's outstretched arm-barrier, signifying his final surrender to being cooped up in the van with Edgeworth. The forensic scientist hoisted him back up onto the bed without a word.
"Just tell me," The prosecutor pleaded softly;
"N-NO! I-I'M SICK OF YOUR GAMES.. THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THEM, ISN'T IT! J-JUST LET M-ME BE... I-I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST YOU, BUT.."
"You thought you could trust me? In the past tense? Phoenix, please! You know you can trust me.. I love you!" The prosecutor clenched the bed's plastic-like body, his teeth clenched as he struggled to stop a few tears from escaping his protective boundary.
"Phoenix... Don't let me lose another one." Edgeworth curtly shook his head;
"Not like this," He mumbled, assuming that the defence attorney would pick up on the reference to his late father.
"D-DON'T TRY TO BLACKMAIL ME AGAIN.."
"Blackmail? I've never blackmailed you! I'd never do such a thing!" The prosecutor widened his eyes, advancing again in a predator-like way, his feet treading as lightly as possible on the floor - as if he thought any unprecedented noise would scare away his metaphorical 'prey'.
"I-I TOLD YOU BEFORE, A-AND I'LL TELL Y-YOU AGAIN! G-GET AWAY FROM M-ME!" Phoenix wailed, toppling himself off of the bed again before falling onto the floor face-first, struggling to get his already-weakened limbs to correspond, grappling desperately with his hands for some sort of grip on the floor as bright white fireworks exploded behind his eyelids, obscuring his vision with the lingering agony of his wounds.
"M-Mr Wright!" Ema blurted in shock.
"S-SAVE ME.. SOMEBODY SAVE ME.. ANYONE!" Phoenix sobbed throughout his words, dampening the floor around him with his uncontrollable tears. He felt a hand upon his back and flinched, cautiously whispering;
"I-Is th-that you, E-Edgeworth..?"
"No, it's me, Ema." The forensic scientist spoke calmly, feeling a wave of relief wash over her as she watched his tense muscles finally relax in the face of his warped sense of safety. Ema rose from her kneeling position on the floor and turned to the prosecutor.
"Out. Now."
"What?"
"He clearly isn't stable with you near him at the moment." She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at Edgeworth as she spoke;
"I don't know what you've done to him but, whatever it is, it has not taken a good effect." The forensic scientist spoke curtly, cutting her sentences to a minimal length.
"You really believe that I did something horrible to him? After all of my frantic searching for him? You must be joking."
"I never said anything definitive, did I? But we can't rule out the possibility."
"Ms Skye..." The prosecutor groaned in frustration;
"Look. I'm going to send him to the nearest hospital, OK? Then I can perform more detailed tests on him."
"You said that last time.."
"Yes, but even more can be used every time, as long as more equipment will be available."
"How did you get the van back, by the way?" The prosecutor peered around the messy 'room', trying his best to avoid glancing at where his boyfriend was sprawled upon the floor.
"Those thugs left it out here, what would you know? I just took it back - it was unguarded, after all."
"Oh," Edgeworth felt water threatening to prickle his eyes and felt like his cue to leave was coming, so he hastily asked his final question;
"Do you think you know why he's.... Being like this?"
"Not really. I need to perform the hospital's tests first." Ema nodded firmly:
"You should be able to visit him by tomorrow. I'll arrange an appointment for you with his lead doctor, too. That way you can get all the info from them."
"Thank you."
"Now scram. Mr Wright has been a bit quiet for a few moments, but I'm sure he's still in that state."
"Bye," Edgeworth plainly stated before stepping down from the van's double-doors and slowly strolling, using his stiff legs, towards the other police officers.
He could hear a few muffled sobs behind him.
