Chapter One
TRACY'S POV
You remember that time when you are so hungry but the damn bell just won't ring. I look at Scola and she mirrors my exact look. We didn't have breakfast since we had a sleep over at my house last night. We overslept only to wake in the morning remembering we have a test. Scola and I maybe smart but we didn't like to fail even though one tests would make little difference to our overall results.
I start counting the seconds and finally someone up there hears me because the bell rings and I'm the first one to close my English book and stuff it in my custom made leather backpack courtesy of my mom. Scola is not far behind dragging her pink bag with one book in it though she's carrying it as if Dwayne Johnson dropped his arm inside. We quickly switch out our books in our lockers before we make a beeline for the cafeteria.
I'm not normally a fatty food person but at the moment I am too hungry so I pick up an extra large plate of fries, two apples and some passion juice. Scola would have scowled at my choice but she picks the same. At least in our school they serve edible food unlike some schools. Just the thought of missing lunch from it being inedible makes my tummy rumble reminding me how hungry I am.
"Where are we gonna sit,the cafeteria is almost filled"Scola groans stating the obvious.
"We have to find somewhere before I drop dead" I whine.
Scola and I usually just sat anywhere we felt comfortable but today luck was not on our side.
There are a few empty spaces but only on the popular table; not to degrade Scola and I but we were not popular. We may not be popular but we have our own respectable class. We're not shoved around or taken for granted but we're also not so high in the St. James High School popularity chain.
"Christian and Jesse are seated alone " Scola points out with a hint of pink on her cheeks.
Yeah you guessed right, Christian my childhood crush, the schools most popular guy, basketball captain, annual motorcycle riding champion and last but not least my worst nightmare. A crude ending for such a beautiful beginning but he deserves it.
I stare wide eyed at Scola who has started moving towards that table.
"Scola don't you dare."I admonish but the foolish girl ignores me.
She knows how much this will be uncomfortable for both us. Scola has the biggest crush on Jesse who happens to be Christian's best friend. Groaning inwardly I follow her.
I just know the whole ordeal will end badly.
"Hey guys sorry to intrude but can we join you, all other seats are filled." Scola pleads making me mentally kick her.
Why is she apologising to them? It's not like they owned the table.
Does she have to sound so pathetic? She maybe my best friend but we're not that desperate. I'm about to turn around and leave when Christian speaks up.
"Please ladies you didn't have to ask."He pointing to the empty seats.
He sounds so pleased that I almost gag. Scola flashes him her billion dollar smile before sitting down. Do I really want to do this? I mean I swore off boys especially a blue eyed blonde called Christian Sloane. Does sitting with him during lunch break my vow?
I'm in the middle of a middle battle with my subconscious when someone clears their throat interrupting me. I jolt from my thoughts to find three pairs of eyes staring at me. I inwardly kick my self for standing there looking like a fool before I sit down slowly placing my trey in front of me giving them a tight smile of appreciation that I'm sure doesn't reach my eyes.
I dig in immediately moaning at the way the food rolls smoothy down my throat before settling in my belly. I'm too absorbed in my food to hear the question directed towards me. Scola nudges me and I look up.
"What?"
"Christian asked you a question."She points out.
Because my parents taught me manners I force my self to look at him.
"Pardon me."I mumble trying to be civil.
Christian smiles and if I weren't allergic to him I would have noted how his blue eyes sparkle when he smiles. Wait I still did but whatever.
"I asked if you're joining the girls biking race this season."He asks once again and I frown.
Scola looks at me and smiles.
"No she's joining the boys race." Scola says sarcastically making me smirk at her.
Both boys look at her as if they haven't understood what she just said and before she embarrasses both of us anymore I respond.
"Why would you think I'm interested in joining such a dumb race?"I ask the words tasting bitter coming out of my mouth.
Christian visibly winces but I couldn't care less, well it may have hurt a little seeing him like that but nobody needs to know that.
"We've seen you ride and you're pretty good... you should consider joining. " Jesse suggests. I look at the dark haired boy Scola has a crush on and wonder how to answer that question without breaking his heart, considering the sarcastic and sadistic answers that always pop out of my mouth without a filter.
"Actually she ......" Scola starts but I cut Scola her off before she reveals my plans.
"Considering you two are the heads of the committee for the race if I decide to join which isn't possible in a million years I'll let you know"I answer back smirking again.
I look at their faces and though you can barely see it I notice the shocked look on their faces.
Tracy-1
Christian and Jesse-0.
For the well being of all of us everyone keeps to themselves apart from the constant bickering between the boys. Of course I'm joining the race,I've been looking forward to that race since it was announced at the beginning of the school term but there is no way I'm admitting that to Christian. The only people who know I'm joining are my dad. To keep the mystery alive I'll only sign up a week to the race. Its called delayed gratification.
Soon enough the bell rings ending lunch break and since I want to get out of there quickly I scoot up and walk away waiting for Scola a few paces away. I vaguely hear her mumble a quick thank you before joining me.
"That wasn't polite Trace."Scola scolds looking at me unimpressed.
I knew she would do this but as usual I don't lack a smartass answer.
"What did you expect me to do? Invite them to train together then later go for a cold beer to wind down."I ask sarcastically.
Scola scoffs," Of course not but hey that actually isn't such a bad idea. I mean Christian is the champion and Jesse is just as good. You should consider it."
Before Scola can spew any more nonsense talk I turn to her making sure there is a note if finality in my voice.
"Scola I love you but no matter how much I appreciate your concern I wouldn't even in my wildest dreams accept Christians help. And if you want to find an excuse to talk to Jesse find your own way but don't use me." I printed out.
I noticed the hurt look in her eyes and decided to soften the blow.
"Besides I'm hurt you think I'm not capable of winning this race on my own. And to refresh your memory I'll get loads of help from Ethan."I remind her.
Ethan was Scola's elder brother and the guy who gave me my first motorcycle ride immediately evoking my passion for motorcycles. He was in his first year in college but came by every other weekend to help me train whenever he was visiting his family. He was practically the only male I closely associated with besides my dad.
"Lets just go to class before you develop a Christian initiated rash" Scola says making me laugh.
I smile and follow her to our afternoon lessons.
**************
As soon as the final bell rings I breath a sigh of relief happy to be done with achy for the day. Another day done. Scola and I had a different class during the last period so I head outside to wait for her in the parking lot. As soon as I see my baby a smile appears on my face. By my baby I mean my purple Yamaha motorcycle.
I run my hand smoothly on her as I lift the seat to remove my helmet and place my backpack there. I sit cross legged on her as I patiently wait for Scola.
At a distance I spot Christian talking to a certain girl seated on his motorcycle his hands on her waist. I roll my eyes inwardly recognizing the girl as Flarrie the school's most popular girl and captain of the cheer leading team. I wonder where she was during lunch considering she's always attached to Christians side like a blood sucking leech. I notice a few more cheerleaders exiting the school bus a few meters swank wearing the skimpy pieces of clothes they call a uniform and that's when I remember the competition they just attended. From the cheerful looks on their faces I guessed that they must have won. Yaaaayh for the school, I mumble sarcastically under my breath lacking my school spirit. School spirit my ass. Before I can gorge my eyes out from the scene playing out in front of me Scola arrives.
"Wanna ride with me today?"I ask her knowing the answer she'll give me like she always does everyday.
"In that death trap, I want to live longer and besides I'm wearing a dress."She says visibly horrified.
That's another difference between Scola and I. She's a barbie queen and I'm a tomboy. She has short brunette hair that visits the salon regularly while I have long dirty blonde hair that only sees a salon once a year on my birthday or when Scola drags me there. At lleast the few times she manages to. That's so sad and ironic considering my mom is a fashionista. Where as Scola is small, short, petite and pretty I am tall, slim and was gifted with boyish looks. Its as if I was created to be a boy but someone changed their mind last minute. People often wonder how Scola and I ended up being best friends but I guess you can call it fate or destiny but it is what it is and we're now and forever inseparable best friends.
"Okay miss if you say so. I'll see your pretty face tomorrow at school."I say tweaking her nose playfully as she swats my hand off.
She pulls on the end of my ever present ponytail before she walks off to her Audi R6.
Did I mention that Scola's parents are extremely rich and yes she got an Audi for her birthday while I got a brand new motorcycle which was an improvement from my previous bike. Not to brag or anything but we are also kinda rich so is every other person who goes to our school with the exception of a few.
I get on my bike, put on my helmet and start her as I bask in the pleasure of hearing her engine purr like a street cat. I ride off quickly wishing she exhumed smoke so I could spray it all over Christian and his minions. But my baby is too well behaved so stoop that low.
****************
I arrive home to find my dad's car parked in the driveway. I smile inwardly considering he hadn't been home in three weeks. My dad is an architect and usually travels for his work projects so he is rarely at home. My parents got divorced when I was ten and instead of going to court to fight for my custody they settled it like civilized people and asked me where I wanted to stay. I chose my dad though mom and I are pretty close.
I head inside and follow my nose to the kitchen where my dad is making his make-up-to-me meal. He always does this when he comes home later than promised cooking my favourite meal, fried chicken and steamed white rice. Dads cooking is definitely the best. I wrap my hands around his waist and hug him tight. I feel his smile even before he turns.
I take after my dad in all aspects except from my blonde hair which I get from my mom. My dad is tall with a wide build which is to be expected as he played football in both high school and college. My athletic personality was another thing I got from my dad.
"There's my favourite angel."My dad gushes smiling widely as he turns to envelop me in a bear hug.
"Dad I'm your only angel."I reply.
"Who said so?!"He retorts.
I slap his broad chest playfully unamused by his joke.
"Okay okay you win."He says rubbing the spot I hit him as if he's in pain.
Dad begins his chatter of how he missed me as he asks me about school and more teasing asking if I held any secret parties while he was away. He knows I'm very anti social so there is no way I would have held a party.
After talking for a while I excuse myself to go clean up and put away my books as dad finishes cooking. Later dad calls me down for dinner and the conversation flows.
"When will you be leaving again?"I ask him as we put away the clean dishes.
"Ready to get rid of me so soon."He asks faking hurt.
"I can't wait for you to leave again dad."I reply sarcastically.
Dad smirks"I can see the sarcasm is still top notch" He comments and its now my turn to smirk.
"Actually I just completed a really huge project and may be around for a while until something shows up but I cant give any specific time."He replies.
"I'm glad to have you back dad."I say to my dad smiling.
"And I'm happy to be with you again."He replies hugging me back.
I'm not much of a hugger but I can never seem to get enough of dads hugs. It's always ever just been the both of us since the divorce so we're really close. My mom and I are close too but she's always away on business so we rarely see each other. The kid in me always hoped my dad and mom would get back together eventually but I gave up on that notion the older I got. At least they were still good friends.
I wish my dad a goodnight before I retire to my room to finish my homework. That night my dreams are haunted by boys with blue eyes and blonde hair. But they are just that. Dreams.
