The Labyrinth

Melody's POV

Everything was blurry as I opened my eyes. My head swam. I felt shaky.

Where was I? Certainly not in the TARDIS. It was too...empty. Slowly, I lifted up my head.

I was in a corridor. It stretched as far as my eye could make out-which wasn't far, as it was dark- with other corridors branching off it. They were all made of weathered stone. Tilting my head upwards-wincing as I did so-I could see a dark, cloudy sky above me. I was outside, and it was night. As I pushed myself to my feet, I heard a loud voice. "Welcome, Melody Jane Piper! Welcome to the Labyrinth! Here, you must find your way out of the Labyrinth, before time runs out. How long? Until you run out of materials and die, that's how long! Timer starts...now."

I spotted a backpack near my feet and lifted it onto my back. This must be the materials. "That's something," I muttered.

I reached in my pocket for my laser light, only to remember I had lost it. Silently cursing, I started forward.

After a while, I hit a fork in the corridor. I could hear voices, whispering, hissing voices, down the left corridor. I decided I didn't want to go down there, and turned right. The whispering voices reminded me of the 'dead' that the microchip in my brain had made me hear.

Suddenly, my foot hit against something hard. Wincing, I bent down and picked it up. It was a decent-sized bronze ball. It only took a second to realize this came off a Dalek. Straightening up, I saw nothing but black. I slung my backpack off my back and searched in it for something to use as a weapon. I found a couple blankets, a pillow, several water bottles, packages of beef jerky and dried fruit, but nothing to use as a weapon. Sighing, I shoved everything back into the bag, taking a small handful of dates to eat. Eating them slowly, I headed forward, walking slowly. I could've turned into a cat, but that would've meant leaving the backpack behind, and it wasn't something I was eager to do. So I walked forward, almost silent, when I saw them. Or rather, heard them.

"We are not tools of torture," I heard a Dalek say.

"No, we are not. But she is a were-cat-Time Lord hybrid, and tool or not, she must be exterminated," another Dalek said. I pressed my back against the wall, or tried to-but I fell backwards. Throwing my arms out, I found out there was a hole in the wall, and I had fallen through it. Slowly, I brought my feet backwards, so that I was standing up right. I turned around and tested the ground behind the hole with my foot. Finding there was some, I walked forward, peering down each direction. As usual, I couldn't see, but I could hear. One direction, it sounded like splashing water. With horror, I realized this maze was built on my fears.

I decided to head towards the water. There, I knew what was down there. I slowly smiled to myself. This maze was becoming even more like the maze in Tim Burton's Labyrinth, only I wasn't trying to save someone. I was trying to save myself. And there weren't any goblins around to help me. I put a hand on the wall, so that I knew when it branched off.

Emily's POV

I groaned as I sat up, placing a hand on my forehead. I felt sick, like I was going to puke. It was dark, but I could see I was in some stone hallway of some sort. The minute I stood up, a speaker overhead boomed, "Welcome, Emily Katherine June! Welcome to the Labyrinth! Here, you must find your way out of the Labyrinth before time runs out. How long? Until you run out of materials and die, that's how long! Timer starts...now."

"Great," I said, grabbing the backpack that was near my feet. "Whoopie-do-dah. This is the best...night ever."

I decided to turn down one of the hallways branching off. After a while, I broke into a run. I wanted to get out of this place as quickly as possible. After a while, though, it seemed as if the walls were closing in on me. I put out my hands and with a panic, I realized they were. I looked up and realized a stone ceiling was on top of me, and was slowly squeezing me in. My breathing was quickening as I slammed my hands against the walls, the ceiling. I was claustrophobic, and I was stuck in a stone box without any opening. I started screaming. "Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Please..."

I curled up in a ball, trying to get my hyperventilation under control. Slowly, I forced myself into a crawling position and put one of my hands forward. There was an opening. Sighing with relief, I made my way towards it.

When the night sky appeared above me, I stood up, taking giant gulps of air. I leaned against the wall. I had to go forward. I couldn't give up. I broke into a sprint again.

After a while, I had to slow down to a walk. I was exhausted, so I reached into my backpack to see what I could find. I found lots of dried food, some blankets and a pillow. I made a make-shift bed out of the materials and fell asleep.

I don't know how long I was asleep, but I woke up to a tickling, all over me. I swatted my hand, only to squish some...things. I sat up quickly and realized I was covered in spiders.

I screamed. I hated, hated spiders. They disgusted me. And to wake up covered in them...it was a nightmare.

I quickly scrambled to my feet, swatting at the swarm. I grabbed my backpack and bursted into a run, trying to shake off the spiders. It was only a little while that I realized I had left the blankets and the pillow behind, but I wasn't going back. I slowly went through my backpack again. No spiders got in there, which relieved me. I grabbed a strip of beef jerky and gnawed on it, walking slowly through the maze. I was alone, and scared. After a while, I paused and screamed, "Melody!"

No reply. I tried it again. "Melody! Melody! Where are you? Doctor? Please, answer..." I spoke this last bit. I felt like curling up in a ball, but I pushed myself to go forward. No point in allowing yourself to give up, I told myself. You won't get out.

I didn't run into anything for a while, but that only made me more paranoid. What if something was waiting for me, to hurt me, to kill me? I had to be on guard.

The Doctor's POV

I shoved myself off the ground, shaking my head. Why weren't Melody and Emily bent over me, watching me with concerned faces? Didn't I just passed out for no reason? I shook my head again, trying to get my vision to clear. I was in the TARDIS. Why shouldn't I be? I wondered, clutching the console. But I noticed Melody and Emily were gone. Maybe they've gone to get something, I thought, wondering exactly how long I had been passed out.

They didn't return, though. Feeling frantic, I pulled the little screen towards me and managed to make it show where Melody and Emily were.

It wasn't pretty. They were both in some stone place, but they weren't together. Emily was running, clutching a grey backpack strap. She was running from some light, and as I watched, it turned out those lights came from flames. She turned left and they were gone.

Melody, however, was standing at the edge of water. She stared down at it, gulping. The water lapped at her ankles. Slowly, she forced herself forward, shaking as she did so. All of a sudden, she plunged down!

I stared at the screen for a moment, clutching the console, then I ran around the console, pulling levers and stuff, while muttering, "No, no!"

Once the TARDIS landed, I sprinted towards the doors and went outside. I was at the water's edge. On the other side, Emily came running. She looked horrible. Her hair was a wreck, there were dark circles under her wild eyes. She mouthed, Doctor? and proceded to wade across, but I shook my head. "Melody tried the same. She went down."

"Oh, my God..." Emily quickly backed up. "Doctor, it's a trap. This place-it's built on fears. There is no exit."

"I've got the TARDIS," I said.

"And I'm trapped on the other side. And what about Melody? She's probably drowned." Emily stared at me with worried eyes. "How the hell are we gonna get out?"

"I can take the TARDIS to the other side," I said soothingly.

"And Melody? She can't swim," Emily said. "How do you know she went down?"

"I watched from the TARDIS," I said.

"And you didn't stop her?" Emily practically screamed.

"I wasn't there. I was in the TARDIS, somewhere and sometime else. I will get Melody back-I don't want her dead one bit-but I'm gonna have to go into the TARDIS." With that, I turned around and went back into the TARDIS. I quickly took it to the other side of the water, and Emily opened the door. "You're wasting time! She's probably-most likely-dead by now!"

I shook my head. "I told you I've been watching." I pointed at the screen.

"Oh, my God," Emily moved closer to the screen. "That's Melody in a jail cell. But how'd she get there?"

"I think the water leads straight into it," I said, pointing out Melody's sopping wet clothes and position. "She fell, obviously."

"We need to get to her!" Emily said.

"Exactly what I was thinking," I beamed at her. "Hang on tight, Emily-it's gonna be a bumpy ride."
