Chapter 44: Just Give Me This Moment

Author's Notes:

Aw I can't I just can't.
Warning: I'm a hopeless romantic...
Sometimes moments are so perfect that I wish that I could freeze time, then I say something that totally ruins the moment ;-; XD

Danny glanced at the clock; it was a bit past nine thirty. He sighed, Vlad would usually show up past ten thirty give or take. He set Box Lunch on his bed who didn't even stir as he put up the crib bars. He went to his bathroom, washed off the concealer, did his hair up in a messy bun and changed into his pajamas.

The teen exited the bathroom, climbed over the bars, sat on the corner of his bed and decided to kill some time by reading the book that the other halfa had lent him. Maybe he could talk to the man about the book some more. Besides, it was pretty interesting, which was proven by the fact that the halfa had already read more than half of the book.

After just a few minutes of reading he was absorbed by the book, mesmerized by the words. It felt as if he were no longer reading but recalling old memories, or reciting the lyrics of a well-known song. Page by page passed through his hands and the amount that he had yet to read shrinks.

There was a knock on the window, startling him a bit. He looked up, feeling a slight crick in his neck and saw Vlad hovering outside of the window.

He smiled and motioned for the other to come in. "Hey." The teen greeted.

"Hi Badger, I hope that you weren't waiting for very long." The man said, phasing through the window.

The younger shook his head; the crick in his neck protested the movement. "Nah, besides I had entertainment." He said, holding up the book.

The other smiled. "What part- Oh... uh hello. Who are you?"

Danny looked over and saw Box Lunch who was sitting and looking at Vlad curiously, trying to place him.

"Box Lunch what are you doing awake?" he asked her with a smile.

The baby looked over at the teen and then back at the man, trying to decide if she liked him or not. Apparently she came to the conclusion that she did, smiled/gurgled and held up her hands in a 'pick me up' gesture.

The slightly surprised look that came over the man's face was almost comical and he looked at the teen with a 'what do I do?' expression.

"She wants to be picked up. Uh I guess she likes you." The younger halfa explained.

The ghost child seconded that notion by continuing to make grabby motions at the other and smiling.

"I sincerely doubt that." Vlad said with a short awkward laugh.

"Yes Fruitloop, because little kids want to be picked up by someone they hate." The teen deadpanned.

"Last time I held a baby was at a publicity photo shot for when I was running for mayor, he burst out crying." The man said matter of factly.

"Maybe he was hungry?" Danny offered.

"I doubt it; I'm not exactly the most comforting person." The other halfa said, crossing his arms.

The teen shot him a 'seriously? You're kidding me right?' look, silently reminding him of all the times that the man had comforted him, whether it was from a nightmare or something else.

"Back then." The older halfa added.

"There, now the sentence makes sense." The younger said.

Box Lunch dropped her arms, and looked at Vlad sadly, clearly unhappy with being denied her request of being held.

The man turned human, paused for a moment and picked up the little girl, surprisingly holding her like a pro.

"Oh carful, she likes to pull hair." Danny warned.

Almost on cue she gave a short tug on the others ponytail. He chuckled "So you're babysitting?"

"Nah, I just picked up a random baby ghost girl and decided to keep her."

The other halfa laughed. "And you were commenting on my level of sarcasm earlier. So hero during the day and babysitter at night."

"The hero thing is only part time and babysitting is way more fun." He pointed out.

"Hm I suppose you're right," he turned his gaze back to the little girl. "What did you say her name was? Box Lunch?"

"Yep, daughter of the Box Ghost and the Lunch Lady."

"Well that certainly explains the name. Hello Box Lunch." The man said, smiling at her.

She returned the smile and tilted her head, analyzing him; he mimicked her causing her to laugh.

"You're good with her, I mean she's pretty friendly but she usually doesn't like anyone other than me carrying her."  Danny said, smiling softly at the scene.

"Beware!" Box Lunch exclaimed, smushing Vlad's face with her chubby hands.

The teen burst out laughing, the other halfa fake glared at him for two seconds (maximum) before laughing as well, gently moving the baby's hands away from his face.

She squealed and clapped, happy that she had made them laugh.

"Quite a gem isn't she? We were discussing earlier how she's going to haunt candy stores with me as her sidekick."

"A fine idea but you might want to start with something small, like a sandbox at the park perhaps.' The man offered.

"Well her powers specialize in food and boxes."

"She could possess a juice box?"

Danny laughed. "Valerie said something like that earlier."

"There you go, two votes for juice boxes," he smiled at Box Lunch "Are you going to haunt juice boxes? Yes?" she seemed to like the idea and laughed.

"You know that you can sit down if you want to right?" the younger halfa said, setting the book next to him.

"Well I wasn't sure if you wanted me to climb over or something." The other replied, motioning toward the bed with one hand.

The teen realized that the bars were still around the bed and that he had just carried out an entire conversation with the other halfa while sitting inside a large makeshift crib.

"Fu-dge. Fudge," He said, remembering at the last moment that Box Lunch was there, he banished the bars, face red. "There."

The other bit back a laugh and sat down on the bed next to the other halfa, still holding the baby who had once again started messing with his ponytail. "Sorry I was trying not to point it out." He apologized.

"She rolls around in her sleep okay?" the younger said, feeling as if he had to defend as to why he had turned his bed into a large crib.

"Hm." The man said, choosing not to comment on the matter. Box Lunch grabbed his hand and started fiddling with it, as if it were a toy of some sort.

Danny cradled his chin with his palm and smiled warmly at the scene before him. The other halfa holding a quickly dozing off Box Lunch and looking nothing at all like the billionaire tycoon that the rest of the world had known; only he could see this side of him, this unguarded, happy person beside him. He wished that he could have Clockwork freeze time because this moment was just so perfect to him. He felt as at ease now as he did when the other had taken him to that pond two weeks ago and realized something. It didn't matter where he was, what mattered was that he was with the man; that as long as he was with him he would feel like this.

"I want this." He said softly.

"Want what?" the other halfa asked.

'I gotta stop saying this shit out loud, well too late to back out of the conversation now.' He thought and sighed. "This moment. I want this relaxed feeling, this calmness; I want it forever."

"You're not the only one." Vlad said.

"But don't you feel like this when you're at your manor? There isn't much there to bother you."

"What I feel when I'm alone in my manor and how I feel when I'm spending time with you are two very different things."

The younger halfa's heart stopped for a moment and when it remembered how to work again he's fairly sure that it's beating twice as fast.

'What...what does he mean by that? That's not something you say to just anyone. Vlad what the hell, you have no idea what you're doing to me do you?' he thought, carefully avoiding the other's gaze.

The teenage halfa licked his lips and took a much needed breath. "What-"

"Beware!" The Box Ghost said, phasing in through the ceiling.

Author's Notes:

Kyah, loved writing this chapter so much.
Sorry for the late updates,

BOX GHOST STFU!!!!! STUFF IS HAPPENING!!! WHY AM I YELLING AT MY OWN WRITING AGAIN1?!?!?!!??!! Danny needs to have shit spelled out for him when it comes to things of this matter because he's already thrown himself at too many people and been hurt to many times to keep having a leap of faith. He doesn't want to keep jumping to conclusions, hence why he's so confused now. ;-;
