Chapter 18: Promises
Author's Notes:
Sorry for the short ass chapter -_-
I was pissed off when I wrote the beginning of this, but it actually helped me write it.
"No." Vlad said almost immediately after the words left Danny's mouth.
"Why, what's-" the halfa began only to be cut off
"I don't know if I can!" he yelled
The shout shocked Danny a bit, but he quickly swallowed his surprise and moved on to the more pressing issue at hand. He waited a moment before speaking. "You haven't turned human since Clockwork fixed you have you?" The other's silence was enough of an answer. "...Why?"
"Because I'm afraid! Okay Daniel, does that answer satisfy you?! I'm afraid that my human half is gone or dead! What if I turn back and I'm just dead?! Or what if I can't turn back because I'm a full ghost now!?"
"Clockwork wouldn't do that." He reassured gently
"Why not?! I would deserve that don't I!? For everything I've done! Why-"
"Vlad please stop speaking like that!" he shouted silencing the other before taking a breath. "I know you're scared. I am too... I can't lose you again... so please, just trust me. I promise that I'll be here for you no matter what the outcome, whether it be that you turn back, or if you're a full ghost now. But please, just try to turn back. I can't help you unless you try." He pleaded.
The other man seemed to process that for a moment as Danny's mind worked at a million miles per hour. 'Oh god, what if he's right? I mean Grandfather Clock wouldn't do something like that but he hasn't transformed in four years. No, he'll be okay, he'll be okay. I know he will.'
Finally the other gave a nod, stood up shakily and closed his eyes. Transformation rings passed over his body slowly; the teen didn't know that they could go that slow. It felt like an eternity, during which Danny noted that the other's rings were now white, like his own rather than pitch black. Finally, he finished transforming. He looked the man over; he was wearing his classic suit though for once his hair was loose.
'Huh, I've never seen him with his hair down... it looks soft. Shit! Focus for fuck's sake!' he thought.
"Well?" the older halfa asked opening one eye and looking at the other. "Did I do it?"
The teen beamed and nodded.
The man opened both eyes and looked himself over and held up his hands clenching and unclenching them; as if convincing himself that it was his body, that he was in control. "I did it!" he laughed half nervous and half in relief.
The younger halfa smiled and pulled out his phone. "Smile." He said taking a picture of him, who didn't get a chance to respond as the cell flashed. "I'm keeping this." He declared pocketing the phone. Before giving the other a hug; he pulled back after only a few seconds though. "Reunion hug." He said shrugging.
'Why the fuck did I do that!?' he internally screamed.
"I'm sorry you had to see that little meltdown." The older apologized.
"Enough with the sorrys already. It wasn't your fault; you can't exactly control stuff like that."
"Did you really mean all that promise stuff?"
He tinted a bit. "Of course I did."
"Thank you. And thanks for being here. After an attack everything just feels..."
"Dull," Danny finished. "It just feels slow and numb." The other nodded in agreement. "Danielle got her ice powers." The teen said changing the subject.
"Really? That's great."
"C'mon, let's go talk somewhere that has light. How come the light switch wasn't working?"
"I blew a fuse."
He groaned. "Dude, bad joke."
"No really, electricity powers made lightbulb go boom." He deadpanned, hands mimicking an explosion and grinned.
"Oh gosh." He said shaking his head. "Really?"
"Hey you asked." He mock argued. "We could go to one of the living rooms, this way." He got up and led them to what looked more like a study than a living room, but there was a large picture window that let plenty of light in.
"So where are we?" he asked settling in the chair opposite to Vlad.
"Wisconsin, in my manor." He explained.
"Oh." Was the other's brilliant response.
"How did you get here?" he asked as he reached over to the side table, picked up his old glasses and frowned as he blew four years' worth of dust off of it.
"Teleporting's a bitch." He said face a bit red in embarrassment as he recalled his numerous collisions with walls.
"No, I mean how did you know to come here specifically." He wiped his classes on his shirt only to have them come up smudged. He sighed and gave up setting them back on the table.
"I don't know. I just felt like something was wrong with you and I ended up here."
"So you're getting teleportation powers?"
"Yeah, but so far I can only do so if I'm emotional or panicked."
"That's better than me; I got teleportation almost seven years after I got the powers. Like you, I could only teleport when I was panicked and even then it was only a few blocks. I'm glad that you're able to use it so well. When did you get it?"
"Last week on the... well anniversary of the you know."
"Badger you don't have to beat around the bush about that. So you got your powers on the anniversary of the Disasteriod event?"
He nodded, and tried lamely changing the subject again. "Frostbite's training Dani with her ice powers. She's getting pretty good."
"I remember Frostbite; he froze Plasmius in a block of ice."
He winced and smiled awkwardly. 'Great job me; I change the subject from when he got thrown into space to the time he got frozen solid. Well at least he's referring to Plasmius as Plasmius and not as him.'
"I never did thank you for getting me out of the ice."
The teen's jaw dropped. "H-how did you know? I thought you had been asleep."
He grinned deviously. "I didn't, I had I hunch that it was you but I wasn't sure. Thank you for confirming my suspicion."
Danny groaned and buried his face in his hands. 'And the award for best one at digging their own grave goes to (feel free to insert imaginary drumroll here)... me!'
