Chapter Seven

Nathan's POV

It was just after lunch and we were all back working on our newest project. The guys and I were working on the frame of the small building. I felt my phone ring in my pocket and quickly pulled it out to look at the caller ID and saw it was my mom, so I quickly answered.

"Hey mom, what's up?"

"Son, you need to get down to the hospital. Lilly fainted and hit her head on the table as she fell."
It seemed like my whole world just came crashing down. I couldn't breathe, and I couldn't move. She was doing so well and seemed like she was getting her memory back. What could have happened. I hope it is nothing serious. It seemed like forever before I could say something, but it was only a few seconds.

"Nathan, are you there? Snap out of it. She needs you, hurry."
"I'll be there as soon as I can."
I quickly hang up and head over to the guys to let them know I need to go.

"Hey guys, I have got to go to the hospital. Lilly fainted and hit her head."

"Is she alright?" Connor asks.

"I don't know. I don't think she is awake yet."
"Go dude, we got this. Just let us know how she is." Eric says with concern.

"Will do. I'll see you later."
I quickly ran to the truck and headed off to the hospital. Not long after I park the truck and rush inside. Quickly running up to the desk, I ask the nurse where LIlly is. I hear my mom come down the hall and she leads me back to her room.

"Come on son, she is sleeping right now. They have done all of the tests and will be back soon."
I follow her back to Lilly's room and I follow her inside. I stop at the door and can't move inside. She is laying there still on the bed attached to monitoring equipment and hooked up to iv fluids. After a few seconds and a push from mom, I walk over to her and place a kiss on her forehead. We have been here before but last time she was never unconscious. I am worried for her. Pulling up a chair I sit down next to her bed and take her hand in mine, watching her sleep.

"They haven't said anything about what is going on?"
"No they haven't yet. The doctor should be back soon though with the results. They pulled a lot of blood and they just brought her back from the cat scan."

"She has been through so much. I hate that she is back here again."
We had been sitting talking for a little while and I turned to see her eyes flutter open.

"Hey sweetheart, you had us all worried. How are you feeling?" I ask.

"My head is pounding and I feel nauseous."
"Let me call for the doctor, you just rest."
I quickly go out and let the nurse know that she is awake and what she said. The nurse called for the doctor and said he would be in, in just a bit. I walk back and see that mom had helped Lilly sit up. I walk back in and sit down and soon the doctor comes in.

"Well, good to see you awake, Lilly. How are you feeling?"
"Like my head is going to explode and like I want to vomit."
"That is usual for a concussion. I was headed back in to go over your tests. So I am glad you're awake. Your scan shows no swelling of the brain and no bleeding, which is good. Your blood work is great. You are dehydrated though. I also want to congratulate you two, though."
We both look at each other, wondering what he is talking about. Not quite sure why he would be congratulating us.

"For what?" I ask.

"You're pregnant, Lilly."

"I'm what?" She asks in a panic.

"What did you say?"

"Your test came back positive. I am going to have them bring in the ultrasound so we can check how far along you are. I will be right back."

The doctor walks out and I am just shocked. I know she is as well. This has gotta be so hard for her. Not knowing who she is and where she comes from but now she is pregnant and can't remember the father. I look back over at her and the tears are falling down her cheeks. Her face falls to her hands and she starts to sob. I see her shoulders shake and it breaks my heart. I sit next to her and pull her against my chest and wrap my arms around her and I rub her back.

"What am I going to do? I have no one. My baby will never know it's real family."
"Shhh, It will be fine. We will do all we can to find your family. You will not be alone. You have us. I will never leave you."

"How can you say that? I can't burden you with a baby."

"Don't think that way. You will never be a burden. We've got this and we all have you too."

Her hands fist my shirt as she sobs into my chest. I look over to my mom and she is crying too. She cries until there is nothing left. The doctor soon comes back in with the ultrasound. I sit back down in my chair as Lilly lays back and lifts up her gown. The doctor places the get on her abdomen as she winces from the cold. He moves the wand around until he finds what he is looking for.

"There we go. That right there is your baby. Let me take some measurements and we should know how far along you are." It takes him a few minutes as he taps a few buttons. He turns to Lilly and smiles. "It looks like you are about eight weeks along. One more thing." He turns the machine again and turns another dial and this amazing sound is heard. I smile and look at Lilly. "That is your baby's heartbeat, and it sounds like a strong one. So everything looks great. I want to keep you overnight for observation and you should be able to go home tomorrow."
"Thank you, doctor."
"You're welcome, I can give you the name of an ob/gyn to take over your care if you like?"

"That would be great."
The doctor leaves and we are left in a quiet room as we absorb what he has just told us. I look over to her and I can see the color leave her face and I instantly grab a trash can and hold it under her as she empties her stomach. Once she is finished I go to the restroom and grab a washcloth to wipe her face. I see a tear escape her eye as it rolls down her cheek. Grasping her chin with my fingers. I make her look up at me.

"Sweetheart, you are not alone in this. We will all be here for you. I have got a friend in the police department. We will go and ask if he can find anything on you and try to find out where you come from. I am sure there is someone looking for you. He would want to know he will be a father."
"What if he is dead, like my dreams say he is?"
"We will deal with it when we come to that."
"When we get back I can start looking for a place. I don't want to burden you with us."

"I will have none of that. I already told you that both of you will not be a burden. Let me help you. I want to be a part of this."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I am very sure."
I lean down to kiss her cheek and sit back down in the chair. I look into her eyes and I can still see the fear residing there. She still has a long road ahead of her and now this is added to her plate. I will be there for her every step of the way. I just wish that someday she could be mine. Her eyes finally meet mine again for a moment and I am unable to pull them away. Her eyes are filled with uncertainty, fear and questions. I hope I can change that to happiness someday. We had been sitting in silence when the nurse came in to check everything.

"So how is our happy couple doing?" she asks with a smile.

"Doing wonderful if you consider that I don't know who I am, where I come from and now pregnant. I don't even remember the father." Lilly answers sarcastically as she lets out a harsh breath. I gently squeeze her hand trying to calm her as another wave of nausea hits and I hold the bucket for her.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know. I just assumed you two were together."
"That's okay. It's just not your usual. She has amnesia and we found her on the side of the road a little over a month ago." I answer apologetically.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry."

"I am slowly getting back my memories but nothing major yet."
"Well, that sounds good. How are you feeling now? How long have you been vomiting?"
"That was the second time. I have been nauseous since I woke up."
"I will let the doctor know he will get you something for it. Everything else looks great."
She heads out and about thirty minutes later, she comes back with some medicine and gives it to Lilly.

"The doctor said that if you are feeling good tomorrow, he will send you home. He just wants to keep you here for observation tonight."

"Thank you, I wish I could go today. I hate hospitals." Lilly says with a frown.

"Yes, thank you nurse."
The nurse walks out and leaves us alone again. Mom headed home and said she would be back in the morning to bring us real breakfast and a change of clothes. The medication finally kicked in and she was feeling much better and was able to keep her dinner down. I sit next to her on the bed as we talked casually about her working with my mom and how much she loves it. She says she remembers that her favorite flowers are lilies and that may be why she picked Lilly for her temporary name. I soon see her yawning as she curls up. She is fighting sleep as we talk.

"Sweetheart, if you're tired, close your eyes. You need to rest."
"I'm just afraid I'm dreaming and I will wake up and you will be gone."
"I am right here, and will be here when you wake."
"Okay."
She closes her eyes and is soon asleep as I listen to her soft snores. I watch her sleep for a bit, the way her nose scrunches every once and awhile, the way her hair falls in her face. She is absolutely beautiful and I wish she were mine. As I stretch back into the makeshift chair bed. I take one last look at her as I fall asleep, dreaming of her.
