Chapter One
Nathan's POV
"Hey Mom, I'm gonna head home. The kitchen sink is fixed and I took the trash out for you."
"Are you sure you want to leave now? It's raining cats and dogs out there. It's not safe."
"Mom, I'll be fine. I will call you when I get home. Besides, Rufus is home all by himself."
"Aw, my little grand dog. When are you going to bring him to see me again? I miss him."
"I'll try and bring him next time I come over. You spoil him too much."
"I don't have any real grandchildren to spoil so I have to spoil something."
"Oh mom, I will text you when I get home."
"Alright, be careful."
"I will. I love you."
"I love you too."
I give her a hug and kiss on the forehead before heading out to my truck and climb in while trying to shake off the rain, slowly pulling out of the driveway and heading back home. The rain is coming down sideways and I can barely see in front of me. Carefully driving down the dark road as my windshield wipers fly at top speed, I wonder why I ventured out in this but I know I need to get back home to my best furry friend. I knew he was freaking out because he did not like thunderstorms. I had been fighting the rain for about fifteen minutes when all of a sudden I saw a figure staggering down the middle of the road. I had to swerve to miss them and slam on my brakes. The truck swerves dramatically before it finally comes to a stop. I look in my rear view mirror and I see the most beautiful blond woman I have ever seen standing with her arm wrapped tightly around her as her other arm is held awkwardly. She looks up and I see a gash on her forehead and her shirt is covered in blood. I quickly get out of the truck and run back to her. As I got close I looked her over and touched her arm as she screamed. I brush her hair back and I can see the gash on her forehead and she winces as she looks back on the ground.
"Sweetheart, where have you come from?" I ask.
"I don't know." she stammers.
"What's your name?"
"I don't know!" She begins to sob.
"Sweetheart, it will be okay. Let's get you to the hospital and check out your injuries."
I wrap my arm around her shoulder and hold her injured arm to her body as I lead her back to my truck. I open the passenger side and help her climb into the truck as I softly shut the door. I quickly run over to my side and hop in as I head off to the hospital. Once we get there I quickly get out and we head into the building.
"I need help. This woman was wandering out on Route Twelve. She doesn't know how she got there or her name. I think she has a broken arm and she has a head injury. I don't know what happened. There were no cars around."
"Have a seat in the waiting room and I will take her back to get looked at. I will let you know when we know something." The nurse says as she takes the woman back with her. The woman looks over her shoulder with a scared look and it tugs at my heart.
"Thank you"
I go to sit down and wait as patiently as I can. It was about an hour or so and my phone rang. I look at the caller ID and I see my mom's face on the screen. Crap, I forgot to text her. Well, technically I am not home yet.
"Hi mom"
"Son, are you ok? I am worried silly. You never texted me."
"I know mom, I'm actually not home yet."
"What? Where are you?"
"I'm at the hospital."
"Oh my god, what happened? Are you okay? I'm coming right over."
"No mom, I'm fine. I found a woman wandering the road and she needed help. She has injuries and doesn't know who she is."
"Oh the poor girl. Please let me know how things go."
"I will mom. Love you."
"Love you too son, bye.
I hang up and wait for the doctor. After another hour, the doctor comes out and he heads over to me hesitantly.
"Are you the one to bring in the young woman with amnesia?" he asks.
"Yes sir."
"She is a lucky woman. She has a severe concussion which has caused her amnesia, and a broken arm. We have stitched up the wound on her forehead. Everything should heal wonderfully, but the amnesia will take time. It could take days, weeks or even years."
"Is she okay now?"
"She is resting comfortably. We gave her a sedative."
"Can I see her?"
"Normally we only let the family members go, but since she doesn't know who she is and you brought her in, we will make an exception. Follow me."
I follow him down a long hallway and eventually he stips in front of a door opening it and allowing me to walk in.
"I'll be back in a while to check on her."
"Thank you, doctor."
"You're welcome, she should wake up in a little bit. If you need anything, I am Dr. Johnson."
He leaves and I walk into the room pulling a chair up next to her bed, and sit down. I hesitantly take her hand as I brush her hair back from her face. Her blond hair framing her face, she looks like an angel. Where did she come from, and what happened to her? I can't seem to pry myself away from her. Something is drawing me to her. For some reason I can't let go. I felt a warmth spread up my arm from the contact of our hands. The little bit of skin contact is like fire. What is happening to me?
I had been sitting here for I don't know how long and I soon saw her eyes flutter open. She slowly blinks her eyes and turns to look at her hand and up to me. Questions hiding within her eyes, I soon see fear starting to rise in those blue eyes and she pulls her hand from mine. A coldness consumes me from our loss of contact and I quickly try to console her.
"It's okay sweetheart, I found you wandering the road. You were injured and I brought you here. You have a concussion and a broken arm."
"Who are you, and where am I?" she asks.
"My name is Nathan and you are in Stillwater Oklahoma."
"Do you know how I got here?"
"No sweetheart, there was no one else around. I didn't see any cars and you were out in the middle of nowhere."
As we were were talking Dr. Johnson walks in to check on her.
"Well, hello there. Nice to see you awake. How are you feeling?"
"My head and arm hurt."
"That's to be expected. Let me check some vitals and I will have the nurse bring you some pain medication."
He walks over and checks her eyes and listens to her heart and lungs. He says everything looks good for now. He wants to keep her for a few days to monitor her concussion and should be able to go home then. He walks out and soon the nurse comes in with some medication for her to take. We sit and talk for a bit more and I can see that she is getting sleepy.
"I am going to let you rest, sweetheart. I've got to head home."
"Please don't go. I don't want to be myself."
"I need to go home and take care of Rufus, my dog. You rest and I will be back before you wake up."
"Alright, be back soon."
I giver her hand a squeeze as I get up and head out of the room . I turn and give one last glance and she is already asleep. I head out to my truck and back to my house. When I finally arrive, I quickly get out. The rain has finally stopped and I run inside. As I open the door I hear the clacking of nails running through the house and I finally see him sliding over the hardwoods as she runs to me and jumps up excited to see me home and I lean down and scratch behind his ears. Rufus has been with me since he was a little pup. He has helped me through a lot.
"Sorry I am home late, buddy, but daddy had an emergency and had to help someone out. I have got to go back over there in a bit. She doesn't want to be alone. I'm sorry about having to leave you again."
We head into the kitchen as he excitedly jumps around me as I fill his bowl. He quickly chows down and has finished within a couple minutes. We head outside for him to do his business and for a little play time before we head back inside and I grab something to eat before I head back to the hospital. I walk back into her room and sit down. After a few minutes I see her blink her eyes and she turns to me and smiles.
"You came back."
"I told you I would."
"Thank you."
"Your welcome, I said I would be back and I meant it."
"I'm glad. I don't know anyone and I am a bit scared."
I sit down next to her as a smile crosses her lips. I see a little sparkle in her eyes as we sit and talk for a bit until the doctor walks in.
"How are you feeling this evening?"
"I am feeling okay. The pain seems to be coming back but it is not too bad right now."
"Your vision okay? No double vision or blurriness?"
"No, my vision seems to be okay."
"That's good. Seems like everything is healing. I've gotten all your tests back and everything looks good .If it all keep going well, you should be able to go home in a couple days."
"Thank you doctor."
He leaves and the room suddenly gets quiet and the air gets thick.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?"
"I don't know where to go after this. I have no idea who I am, or where I am from. I have nowhere to go."
"Listen, you can stay with me, until we get this all figured out. I have extra rooms."
"I can't inconvenience you. You have been so kind to me already. I don't want to be in your way."
"You won't be. I can't just let you go, not having any place to go to."
"I don't know."
"Just let me help you. I promise I will be a gentleman."
I can see the turmoil in her eyes as she fights with herself in this decision. A smile soon crosses her lips and I can see it in her eyes.
"Alright, but only till I can get my feet under me. I don't want to overstay my welcome."
"You can stay as long as you like. You don't have to worry about that. You stay until you have your memories back. Find out who you are first. Then you can get back on your feet."
"Thank you, you are so kind."
"I don't know why, but something in the back of my mind's telling me to help you. I can't seem to let you go."
She blushes as she looks down at her trembling hands. I lean over and pull her chin up so she looks at me.
"I've got you sweetheart. We will do this together."
I don't know what this woman is doing to me. From the first time I laid eyes on her I have been drawn to her. I can't seem to walk away from her. My heart beats faster in my chest when she looks at me. Just the touch of her skin sets a fire through me. I can't get close. Some day she may remember her name and go back to what she knows and I will be left heartbroken. My heart tells me something different and it is at war with my brain. I don't know if I could let her go and we just met. We sit and talk for a bit when the nurse comes in and tells me that visiting hours are over. I don't want to go, but I will have to obey the rules.
"I will be back tomorrow. You rest, and I will see you later."
"You don't have to come back. I will be okay."
I can see the fear in her eyes and I know she really doesn't want to be alone.
"It's okay, sweetheart. I don't mind. You need company and I don't want you to feel alone."
"Alright, See you tomorrow."
"Good night, see you tomorrow."
I walk out the door and look back as she curls up under her blankets. I stood there for a second wishing I could curl up with her wrapping her up tight to me. I flip off the lights as I leave the room to head out. I am soon home and head into the house as I'm greeted by Rufus.
"Bark, bark, bark."
"I'm happy to see you too, boy. Were you a good boy while daddy was gone?"
"Woof!"
"Well, daddy will be bringing a guest home soon. She will be staying with us for a while so you have to be on your best behavior."
"Grrr!"
"Don't sass me. You know you can do it. Come on, let's go out one last time before we head to bed."
We head out back for him to do his business and then head up to bed. He goes to lay in his bed as I strip down and crawl into mine, exhausted. It took me a bit to fall asleep, because all I could think about was her.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It had been a few days and I had been visiting with her every day. I had called my crew and let them know what was going on. You see, I own my own construction company so I am able to take time off when I need to. The guys understood and said they would handle everything until I returned. The doctor said she was healing perfectly and was confident in sending her home today. I had stopped to pick up some new clothes for her and walked into her room. She looked up and smiled when she saw me.
"Are you ready to leave this place?"
"Yes, I am. Oh, but I have no clothes."
"Don't worry, I brought you some new ones."
"Thank you."
I hand her the bag and she walks into the bathroom to shower and get dressed. Once she is finished she walks out and Doctor Johnson comes in with her discharge papers.
"Here are your walking papers. Now if you start feeling dizzy or the pain becomes unbearable come see me. I also have some medication for you. You take care of yourself."
"Thank you Doctor Johnson."
"Alright sweetheart, let's go." I grab her bags and we head out to my truck.
"You know. I can't just call you sweetheart all the time. What do you want to be called until you know who you are?"
"Hmm, I haven't really thought about it. What about Lilly? I kinda like that name.""Alright, then, LIlly it is. I like it. Let's get you home, LIlly."
