Prologue
Sang was startled awake by the frantic ringing of her phone. With a slight groan, she rolled over and picked it up. "Hello?" Her voice was still groggy with sleep, only having just fallen to sleep three hours before.
"Sang, it's Dr. Roberts," his voice filled her ear. The slightly controlled panic tone she could hear had her instantly awake, sitting up in her bed. "What's wrong?" Her mind was running everywhere, worried about the nine men she had come to love so much.
Dr. Roberts sighed softly and Sang's heart sank. Whatever the news he had, it wasn't good. "A second team went in and found the Blackbourne team. They were barely alive but were extracted just in time.
"However, they are at the recovery unit now. You need to get here as soon as you can." The line went dead and for a brief moment, Sang's world came to a stop. Worries for her men swirled in her mind. Were they hurt, if so, how bad? Would they make it, or had Dr. Roberts called her to get her to come and say goodbye?
With her heart racing, Sang flew out of the bed and dressed quickly. Grabbing her phone and keys, she left her apartment and slipped into her car. The Academy operated recovery unit where the guys would be was almost half an hour away, but almost twenty minutes later, Sang was whipping into a parking spot.
Running through the front door, she stopped at the front desk. "Hey Lily, where are they?"
"They're in Ward B..." Before Lily could say another word, Sang was gone. Her worry over her nine men had her body acting without thought. She wouldn't calm down until she saw them - saw that they were alive and breathing.
When Sang stepped out of the elevator, Dr. Roberts was the first person she saw. He gave her a grim smile and silently lead her to their room. "They're all in a coma right now Sang," he said as he held the door open for her. "Their wounds were pretty bad, but we managed to save them. Now, it's just up to them as far as when they wake up."
"Thank you," Sang said as she looked at him, tears making her eyes bright. He nodded and quickly left her alone. One by one, Sang went to each man, placing a soft kiss on their brow. They all looked relaxed, but she knew that if they had been awake, they would be in pain. Slipping into a chair next to North's bed, Sang took his hand in hers and let her eyes drift shut. She wouldn't be leaving this room unless it was an emergency or her doctor's appointment.
With a deep sigh, Sang rolled her neck. She flinched as it popped a little, releasing the tension that had been building up for almost a month. Her men had been in a coma for almost a month and even Dr. Roberts was starting to lose hope that they would wake up. Making her rounds to each bed again, Sang's hand absent-mindedly rested on her stomach.
She had found out last week that she was pregnant. A smile played on her lips as she pictured how they would react when she told them. She knew that they would be happy. Right before they left for their last mission, they had all talked about starting their family. Sang knew that each of them would make excellent fathers and that they would all love this child as if it was their own.
A knock on the door behind her brought Sang from her musings. Turning around, she found Erica smiling at her. "Still no change?" She asked and Sang shook her head slowly. Only Erica, Jessica and Uncle came to check on the guys, but only Sang stayed by their side night and day.
Suddenly, Erica's eyes brightened as she rushed towards Sang with a huge smile on her face. "You're pregnant!" She exclaimed as she hugged Sang. "I just found out last week," Sang admitted shyly as a faint blush tinted her cheeks. "Do you know which one of the boy's is the father?"
Sang shook her head, not really caring. They were a family, that was all that mattered. "The doctor said that I'm almost two months along. I'm hoping that they'll wake up soon so I can share the news that they're going to be fathers with them." Understanding flashed through Erica's eyes as she nodded.
"They'll be overjoyed Sang, don't doubt that for a minute. They love you with everything they are and they'll love your child just as much." Happy tears began to fall as Sang smiled. She knew that, but it didn't hurt to hear it from someone she valued as her family.
An hour passed and Erica left to go pick Jessica up. It was almost five that afternoon when Sang headed down to the cafeteria to eat. While she wasn't all the hungry, she was now carrying something precious to her. And her child would be cared for to the best that Sang could do.
With a full belly and hopes that her men would soon awaken, Sang made her way back to the room. When she opened the door, she froze. Erica, Jessica, and Uncle were standing in the middle of the room, but that's not what caused Sang to freeze. No. It was the nine pair of eyes that had snapped towards the door as she started to open it.
Her heart soared when she saw that she was awake. But before she could speak, Owen spoke up. "Excuse me, Miss... Do you have the wrong room?" Confused, Sang's gaze turned towards the three people standing, only to find their emotions just as churning as hers.
Uncle was the first to break the silence. "Boys, this is Sang. She's been watching over you while we had to be home." The guys nodded, not taking their gaze from Sang. Uncle cleared his throat. "Sang," he said softly and Sang knew that whatever he was about to tell her would be bad. But it couldn't be worse, she thought. Her boys were awake and alive.
"The ambush that the boys went through, well..." Uncle rubbed the back of his neck, wondering how to tell the girl that he thought of as his own that none of the guys remembered what she was to them... or what they were to her. "They have amnesia," Erica cut in, taking a step toward Sang. "Dr. Roberts isn't sure if or when their memory will return."
The look of pity in Erica's eyes was almost too much for Sang to bear. Looking back at her men, her heart broke. Their eyes that had once held so much love for her were now empty. A few of them held curiosity, but their looks of love were no longer in sight.
Sang pressed her hand against her mouth to stop the sobs that threatened to fall. Before anyone could blink, Sang whirled around and ran down the hall towards the elevators. She could hear Uncle and Erica calling after her but her mind was operating purely on survival mode. They didn't remember her, they thought she was a stranger. And she had to protect her child.
