In 1911, the Gargoyles of Hogwarts, certain that nothing of interest ever happened to them, went on strike, refusing to come back until something interesting did happen.
-----
This, technically, made them into hypocrites as the very thing that they had just done, was actually very interesting. They performed a 'Wildcat Strike' or otherwise known as a 'Wildcat Strike Action'.
A Wildcat Strike (or a Wildcat Strike Action) is where unionized workers do something without union leadership's approval and this can, technically, be seen as 'mutiny'.
-----
The Gargoyles of Hogwarts are much like any other Gargoyles, separated into two categories: ornamental or decorative, or working ones.
Ornamental or decorative Gargoyles are simply for decoration or superstition. Some believe that the grotesque creatures of stone help to ward off evil spirits - like putting a horseshoe on your front door, or the Ba Gua mirror, or Palaspas on Palm Sunday, or wind chimes, or a Mezuzah.
The working Gargoyles are used to direct water away from the sides of buildings like Hogwarts, using their spouts to do so.
-----
Gargoyles are usually inanimate objects, used for decoration or specific purposes. The only time that Gargoyles are actually animate (or not inanimate), is when some witch or wizard has given or placed a curse or spell upon the stone creature, giving it the power to shed it's inanimate state and become animate.
