Teardrops, their crystallised form shining in the cold, harsh winter sun, hung from the tips of her eyelashes, pulsating with a rainbow of colours as the ice fractals poured over the fragile film that held them together. She watched as a single snowflake fluttered to the ground in front of her and she continued to stare as it hit the surface of the lake, melting into the ice, entranced by the beautifully sad loneliness that came so frequently with being unique, alone. Burying her head in her hands, she realised that she'd been crying for too long and too many times lately. Her emotions, for the first time in years, were getting the better of her. These thoughts raced through her head - like a steam train refusing to stop at an empty station - until she shook her head and raised it, bringing her gaze out of the comforting darkness that the palms of her gloved hands provided and into the harsh reality of life. All around, girls and boys played joyfully, their happy shouts ringing across the lake. But she wasn't thinking about the shouts of joy. No, all she could think was; How do they see me?

Yes, she had built up quite a fierce reputation of the nightmare girl who no one wanted to cross. The girl who, if you did cross, would more than likely punch you in the face and then walk calmly away to plot her real revenge, a revenge that would hit you when you were least expecting it, a revenge you never could escape. The girl who, if you did as much as stand on her toes, could, and would, send a fireball over your shoulder (yes, the Gryffindor common room drapes were ruined), just to hear your startled yelp. The girl who, no matter what, could always find the most unfortunate of times to prank someone. But, her reputation also came with a nice side, one of a girl who, if you had a problem, she would listen to you, understanding every word, and, in the end, would make you laugh until you split your sides open, one of a girl who, if you had trouble with your homework, would keep on giving you hints until you finally got it, one of a girl who would always stand up for whatever, or whoever she believed in. One of the girl Lorelei so desperately wanted to be.

However, she wasn't wasn't that girl, well not totally. Most people would just call it a lie, based on a fantasy and brought to life. But it was just that, a lie. Just a facade. Nothing more, nothing less. The real girl beneath, the real Lorelei, was broken and dejected like a forgotten rag doll. But she would never, ever let anyone ever see that side of her. Shuddering slightly at the bitter cold, Lorelei shoved her hands in her pockets, wincing as her frozen fingers brushed against the crumpled piece of paper at the bottom. She had gotten the owl this morning and what she had read in the letter had made her eyes brim with tears. She had run from the hall, too ashamed to let her friends see her cry, and, after wandering the grounds for god knows how long, had finally came to a rest here.

She shuddered, reliving the very moment she had read it, reliving every word, every feeling. Slowly drawing it out of her pocket, she decided to face her anguish and, smoothing it out, she started to read.

Lorelei,
The psychiatrists told me to write this letter, to get all of my thoughts and feelings towards you out of the way. They promised me that they wouldn't read it, that they would just fold it up and send it to you, and, for that, I am glad.
You wrecked my life, my darling little devil, and I am so very glad that I never have to see you again. You are a monster, borne from the pits of hell, and you do not deserve even a hint of light in your life. First of all, you kill Danny, my precious little Danny who I'd always loved so much more than you. You were the cause of all of his anguish and you were what drove him to the edge of madness. For a sister so young, who knew your treachery could be so destructive?
Then you caused that crash with Jenna and Charles. Are you trying to pick us all off one by one? You ruined everything for them...everything. Now they hate you too - as do I. Jenna, I'm sure, has already told you but I'm certain you didn't know about Charles detesting you, did you?
To top it all off, you go and kill your own father. What kind of cold hearted creep are you? To murder your own father in cold blood, just like you killed Danny, and how you wished the rest of us dead.
You are unmistakably the most evil human being I have ever met and I never want to see you again.
Sincerely,
Mother.

A coldness settled over her heart as she read the letter for the second time. Some part of her, deep down within, questioned why she would intentionally break her own heart yet again by rereading the letter, but, just as that part questioned her, another part whispered back, it's menacing tone both mocking and incredulous at her ignorance. Because, Lorelei, you deserve it.

It was like a thousand daggers had pierced her heart, sadness overwhelming her as she stared, bleary eyed with tears, at the letter. The words melded together, turning into swirling ink stains on the page, and she blinked furiously, trying to will away the tears. But nothing worked and, staring at the letter, she suddenly felt a surge of anger claim her. Gripping the sides of the paper, she pulled in opposite directions, feeling the anger build within her as the paper ripped into half. Turning it around, she did the same again and, without a second thought, tossed the pieces out onto the lake.

They floated away, their paper form easily catching the wind and wishing far away, never to be seen again. Bending her head, she erupted into another racking series of sobs.

Somewhere over the other side of the lake, sat a boy, his thick body warmer warming him to the bone and his floppy black hair almost covering his eyes. Looking up, he noticed four pieces of paper floating through the air and, reaching up, he grasped them tightly and pieced them together, curious to know the contents.
