Chapter 8

I skipped them leaving Rivendell in case anyone is confuse

*****

We had been walking for a while when we stopped to rest.

"We must hold this course west of the Misty Mountains for forty days. If our luck holds the Gap of Rohan will be open to us, and there our path turns east towards Mordor," Gandalf stated.

Sam walked over to where Frodo and I sat with a plate of food for his friend. I turn and watch Boromir teaching Merry and Pippin to fight.

"Good, very good" Boromir praises.

"He can actually say something positive!" I joked to Frodo, all I got in response from the halfling was a small smile.

Aragorn, who was sitting on another rock close by started to instruct them. "Move your feet!"

"You look good, Pippin," Merry commented.

"Thanks," Pippin said.

Gimli was sitting by Gandalf behind Boromir and the halflings. I look over at Legolas who is keeping watch, he is looking off into the distance.

"If anyone was to ask for my opinion, which I note they are not, I'd say we were taking the long way round!" Gimli started. "Gandalf, we could pass through the Mines of Moria. My cousin Balin would give us a royal welcome."

"No, Gimli, I would not take the road through Moria unless I had no other choice," Gandalf replied.

Legolas walks in front of Gandalf and Gimli and stares at a cloud. I jump up when Pippin yelps as Boromir's sword cuts his finger.

"Sorry!" Boromir exclaimed and took a step towards the hobbit.

Pippin went and kicked Boromir in the shin.

"Get him!" Merry yells when he jumps on Boromir and he and Pippin wrestle Boromir to the ground.

"Linwë! Help us!" Pippin yelled. "For the Shire! Hold him down Merry! Hold him down!"

Aragorn watches in amusement and I just laugh and shake my head. Oh, how I love hobbits.

Aragorn gets up and pulls the hobbits off Boromir. "Gentlemen, that's enough!"

Sam looks up at the cloud that was moving towards us. "What is that?"

"Nothin' " Gimli says. "Just a wisp of cloud."

Boromir gets up at looks at the 'cloud'.

"It's moving fast, and against the wind!"

"That isn't a cloud!" I exclaim. "It's-"

"Crebain! From Dunland!" Legolas yells cutting me off.

Aragorn runs and grabs his sword. "Hide!"

"Hurry!" Boromir shouts.

"Frodo! Take cover!" Aragorn yells again.

We all run and pick up our packs and put out the fire. Then the others hide under bushes and rocks. I start to run to a rock but my locket snags on a branch on one of the bushes and the chain breaks. I turn to go back to retrieve it, the crows are coming ever closer, and I know I have to hide but I can't leave my locket!

Someone grabs me and yanks me behind a rock. I look to see who it is, Legolas. I open my mouth to say something, but he gestures for me to be quiet.

When the crows are gone we climb out from our hiding spots. I run over to where my locket lay, but someone already beat me to it. Boromir.

He was holding it up and looking at it disgust. "You risked our safety for this?"

"Yes! It's my mother's locket! Give it back!" I exclaim.

"This is why things of importance should not be brought on dangerous quests!" He says.

"What do you mean?" I ask slowly.

"I mean, it should be disposed of before it causes anymore problems," he sneers.

He throws my locket down onto the ground and brings his foot down upon it, smashing it. I stare down at it then glare at Boromir.

"You bastard!" I yell. "That was my mother's locket! That was all I had left of her!"

I pull back my clenched fist and punch him in the face. I grab my precious, now broken locket and run off, tears streaming down my face.

In the end I let Aragorn convince me to go with the Fellowship to the Pass of Caradhras. Well let me tell you right now: I hate snow. I used to want to see it before, but I have changed my mind.

I was freezing, my thin cloak didn't bring me much warmth. I was walking in front of everyone, trying to stay as far away from Boromir. I had no sadness left in me. I only had anger, and I was going to get revenge on Boromir.

Legolas walked up next to me. I looked over at Legolas, catching him staring at me.

"What?" I asked.

"Uh, I noticed, you were cold!" he said quickly.

"No, I'm not cold," I replied, smirking at his nervousness.

"Yes, you are, you're shivering," Legolas stated. He pulled of his cloak and draped it around my shoulders.

"Th-Thank you," I said, letting my act go.

"Are you alright?" Legolas asked, looking concerned.

"Yes, I'm fine," I snapped, not wanting to talk about what happened between Boromir and I.

He looked at me, his blue eyes full of doubt.

"I'm fine, really," I said more softly.

All of a sudden I heard Frodo yell, I looked back and saw him slip on a loose rock.

"Frodo!" Aragorn yells. He runs back and picks the halfling up.

Frodo clutches at his chest. "The ring! It's gone!"

We begin searching for it, but I realize Boromir has picked up something else that doesn't belong to him.

"Boromir!" I hiss, no one heard me except Legolas.

"Boromir!" Aragorn says sharply.

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing," Boromir says, reaching out to touch the ring with his other hand. "Such a little thing."

"Boromir!" I say in a threatening tone, but he didn't seem to hear me.

"Boromir!" Aragorn says urgently. "Give the ring to Frodo!"

Boromir gives the ring back to the worried hobbit. "As you wish, I care not,"

The snow starts to pick up and I hear a strange voice. I hope I'm not going crazy.

By now Boromir and Aragorn are stumbling along, carrying the hobbits. Gimli is struggling through the snow as well.

Legolas was walking on top of the snow with no trouble at all and so was I.

I heard the voice chanting in some black language.

"There is a fell voice on the air!" Legolas calls.

"It is Saruman!" Gandalf yells.

"He is trying to bring down the mountain Gandalf!" Aragorn shouts. "We must turn back!"

"No!" Gandalf yells. He begins chanting some spell.

Saruman starts chanting again, trying to drown Gandalf out.

A giant lightning bolt struck the top of the mountain and rocks and snow started to fall. An avalanche. I brace myself as hundreds of pounds of snow fall on top of me.

I try to dig my way out but it's no use. I lay there limply, waiting for someone to rescue me or for my air to run out. Fortunately I see the someone make a hole in the snow and I feel myself being pulled out. I look to see who my savior is, Legolas.

I lay in his arms to cold to move or say anything.

"Linwë!" He says. "Linwë, are you alright?"

He pulls my cloak around me and holds me against him. When I am warm enough I pull away from him.

"Legolas," I manage to say.

"You're alright!" He says, his voice full of worry.

I nod and look around. Everyone has managed to pull themselves out of the snow.

"We must get off the mountain!" Boromir declares.

"Well, obviously," I mutter to Legolas, he laughs softly.

"Make for the Gap of Rohan and take the west road to my city!" Boromir suggests.

"The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard!" Aragorn replied.

"If cannot pass over the mountain let us go under it!" Gimli added. "Let us go through the Mines of Moria!"

"Let the ringbearer decide," Gandalf said.

I looked at the hobbit, he looked tired and confused.

"We cannot stay here!" Boromir said. "It will be the death of the hobbits and the girl!"

I lunged towards Boromir, but Legolas restrained me in his arms.

"Frodo?" Gandalf asked.

"We will go through Moria." Frodo declared.

"So be it," Gandalf replied.

I exchanged a worried glance with Legolas. We were going to a mine. Mines are underground. Yay...
