Chapter 22

Screams of dying men fill the air, orcs smashing through our ranks, as if we were ants. Aragorn had issued the attack on the Black Gates, plunging us all into war. I had lost sight of Legolas, having been swept away from him. I tirelessly slew orcs that came at me, while at the same time looking for any sign of Legolas' blond hair. I froze when I saw a massive oliphaunt looming over us, crushing men beneath its feet. I began to retreat away from it when I saw it rear its head in pain, that's when I noticed Legolas.

My heart soared and I began to fight my way towards him. He jumped off of the dying creature's head as it fell, landing on his feet gracefully. He scanned his surroundings, his eyes brightening considerably when he caught sight of me. I started to run towards him, but a sharp pain pierced blossomed in my back. I twisted around to see an orc had pierced me with a spear. I cried out in agony as he yanked it out of my back, causing me to fall to my knees.

The world swam around me, I tried to focus on Legolas, but a wave of confusion hit me when I could no longer see him. I collapsed onto the ground, my cheek hitting the rough dirt. Before the light faded from my eyes I heard a faint voice crying my name.

Legolas' POV

I watched helplessly as the orc ran his spear through Linwë's chest. I loosed an arrow at the orc, hitting it between his eyes. My vision was red with rage as I began to kill anything that blocked my path to my love. Once I reached her I picked her up, to carry her to safety.

"Legolas! Help!" I heard a voice shout. Gimli. I felt a tug at my heart, forcing me to make the decision to abandon my friend, or know that I did nothing to aid Linwë.

Biting back a curse I shifted Linwë so she was laying limp over my shoulder. I fumbled to string an arrow as she whimpered at the pain I was causing her. I shot the arrow at the beast that had attacked Gimli, but began to run again without looking to see if my arrow had made its mark.

I set her down when I reached a safe distance away from the fighting. I began to pull at the straps that held her quiver in place and tossed her cloak aside. Her shirt was damp with blood, and a gaping whole was in her chest. I placed my hands on top of it, ignoring the blood that covered my hands. I allowed my Light to go into her and after a few seconds I glanced at her, but nothing had happened. Frustrated, I tried again, but still heeded nothing.

She opened her eyes, looking at me. "Legolas,"

I cupped her head, staring into her eyes. "Linwë,"

She gasped as a new spasm of pain overtook her. She looked up at me once more, exhaustion evident in her eyes as she fought to stay awake for a few seconds more. Clasping my arm she struggled to speak. "Legolas, don't leave me,"

I shook my head. "I will never leave you, mellamin,"

She gave me a faint smile as her grip on my arm weakened. "Legolas, remember me,"

I bit my lip, forcing back tears. "Don't talk like that, you're not going anywhere,"

"Legolas, be strong," she coughed. "Valar be with you,"

A ragged breath escaped my lips. "Linwë, I love you,"

Her expression softened and she gripped my shirt with her hand. "I love-"

Another cough raddled her body, this time bringing up blood. Her breathing slowed, and soon her hand fell limp at her side. I gripped her shoulders, trying to call my Light, but it was too late. I knew in my heart she was gone.

My shoulders shook and I choked on tears. Hugging her body to my chest I sat there, letting grief wash over me.

I did not know how much time had passed when I felt a hand touch my shoulder. I jerked away from the touch, I heard a sigh.

"Legolas, the fighting has passed, you must return to Theoden's halls," Aragorn said softly.

"I do not wish to, there is nothing for me there,"

Aragorn crouched down in front of me, forcing me to look at him. "I grieve for her death as much as you do Legolas, but you cannot stay here,"

He waited besides me until I found my strength to get up. He leaned down to pick up her body, but I pushed him away. "Don't touch her,"

I was surprised at the malice in my voice and Aragorn looked at me sadly, bowing his head. I gently scooped her into my arms and Aragorn helped me saddle her to a horse. Ignoring the hollow feeling in my heart I rode ahead of Aragorn, not wanting to speak.

*******
We held a funeral for her the day after, along with King Theoden. Gandalf was going to travel with me to bring her back to her rightful place in Rivendell.
I stood stony-faced and indifferent to the words of condolences muttered to me by passing strangers.

I said a word to no one as I left. After making sure I had all the supplies I needed Gandalf and I began our journey to Rivendell. Linwë's coffin being pulled in a wagon by a strong mare, an enchantment placed on her so her body would remain the same throughout the journey.

Gandalf told me of what happened after the battle. Frodo and Sam destroyed the Ring, Sauron finally meeting his downfall. They were rescued by the Eagles, and there taken to Rivendell. I remained silent while he talked, to me, nothing mattered anymore.

After a few days of hard pushed riding we reached Rivendell. Lord Elrond and Arwen were waiting in the courtyard when we arrived, their faces painted with grief. Elladan and Elrohir watched silently as we approached, eyeing the coffin. Arwen turned away to hide her tears as her sister was revealed, Elrond simply ducked his head. Gandalf and I left the family to grieve.

I followed him to Frodo's chambers. I waited until everyone else had left before entering. Frodo glanced up, smiling when he saw me. He had not been told of her death. His smile faded from his face as he saw my hardened look. "Where is Linwë? I have not seen her,"

I bowed my head. "She is dead, she died at the Black Gate,"

Frodo's jaw clenched and he drew the blankets around him. "I am sorry for her death,"

I stop myself from snapping at him. He didn't deserve my anger. He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, he had done nothing to wrong Linwë. I simply nodded.

Gandalf found me in the courtyard, shooting blindly at the trees. He sighed, I lowered my bow and looked at him.

"Why did you not attend her burial?" Gandalf asked. "Lord Elrond is hurt you did not attend,"

"A funeral will not bring her back," I muttered darkly. "Nothing will,"

He eyed me with uneasy silence. I looked away from his disapproving gaze. "I am leaving for the Gray Havens at dawn,"

"So soon?" Gandalf sounded surprised. "Will you not return to Mirkwood?"

I gave him a look, focusing my attention back on shooting the trees.

"Legolas," there was an edge to his voice.

"There is nothing for me there, nor anywhere else, I do not wish to burden anyone else,"

He turned away from me. "As you wish, I see I cannot change your mind. Before you leave, Lord Elrond wishes to speak with you,"

Before dawn broke I walked to Lord Elrond's study, finding him inside. He turned at my arrival and nodded to me.

"Thank you,"

I was taken back, I had done nothing, it was my fault for her death. "What I have I done that has earned your thanks? I am at fault for your daughter's death,"

Elrond shook his head. "I know she held great love in her heart for you, remember that,"

I reached into my pocket, taking out her locket. I held it out to him. "This was hers,"

"Keep it, in token of her memory,"

I nodded solemnly. Turning on my heel I left him. Once outside I mounted my horse and rode off.

The journey had taken several weeks, but the ships had finally reached Valinor. I felt an odd sense of peace wash over me as I stepped on the shore. For once in a long while my heart felt at peace, though the sadness still lingered. Keeping my head bowed I slowly walked along a path, listening to the songs of birds and let the warm sunlight kiss my hair. A small sound stopped me in my tracks. I glanced up to see a maiden. She smiled. "Legolas?"

As I heard her voice a smile crept across my face. Confusion mixed with my happiness. "How are you here?"

"Sh, that doesn't matter, we are together now,"

I blinked and stepped towards her, she laughed, a beautiful sound, and threw herself into my arms. I picked her up, hugging her tightly, planting kisses on her face and neck and she laughed. I smiled to myself as she sighed contentedly. I was finally with my Linwë.

A/N
We've finally reached the end of their story! I can't believe I've made it this far! I may go back and edit a few of the first chapters, but I don't think I'll write a whole sequel, though I can write a short story of them in my one shot book. I want to thank all of you who read this fanfic, it means so much to me! Special shout out to Ellethwen2931  , for giving me support, and @Caladhiell for helping me come up with the idea for this!!
Thank you all so much!!!
