13 - FROM FEAR TO ANGER AND BACK AGAIN
It has been three days since Teresa Holmes and Henry Mills went on their first date. Things were going rather well, the pressure removing from their shoulders now that the big first date has passed by. Henry even claims he has another surprise for her around the corner; Teresa was ecstatic to learn what they would do on their official second date. She tried her best to pry it out of him but he was good at keeping his secrets and never gave in, no matter how many times she would kiss him, hoping to break him down.
The soulmates walked arm and arm down the sidewalk, each holding a cup of near-empty cocoa they purchased from Granny's earlier that day. They were on their way toward Regina's manor to offer Zelena some help with the last of her boxes, as the two sisters made it official by moving Zelena into the manor. Not only will this opportunity allow for the two of them to get to know each other better, but Regina can offer her sister some parental advice. Henry didn't seem to mind either, as he wanted to get to know his aunt better.
After taking a sip of his cocoa, Henry glanced toward his girlfriend. "Do you want to come over for dinner tonight and help celebrate Zelena's official move in? I'm sure my mom won't mind setting another place at the table."
Teresa smiled. "Actually, that would be nice. I haven't seen Robin in at least two days, and it really helps when I see her. She's beginning to look so much like him, don't you think?"
Henry nodded in agreement. "Yeah. Yeah, she really is."
"How's your mom handling it?" Teresa asked.
The teenage boy sighed, his shoulders sagging a little at the mention of his adoptive mother. "Honestly? Not that well. She's been a little quiet these days. And I know she's grieving. I just wish she would talk to me, you know?"
"You just have to give her time. Everyone deals with grief differently. I mean... I ran off into the woods for days the moment I found out about my mother. And with Robin... I'm sure I lost some weight with the lack of food."
Henry was ready to respond, but the sound of loud whirling caused his lips to smack together immediately. They stopped walking and glanced up at the sky as a massive flying ship flew overhead, casting a large shadow that consumed the soulmates completely for a short moment.
"That has to be Hyde, right?"
Henry took her cocoa, tossed it into the nearby trashcan, then grasped her hand in his own and began tugging her along with him. "Come on, let's go!"
Teresa and Henry soon met up with Emma, Killian, Regina, Snow White, David, Dr. Jekyll, and many other residents of Storybrooke, Maine. They ran up the hill of the park and watched as the flying ship move deeper into the woods. They narrowed their eyes through the sun rays, hoping to catch sight of someone aboard, but the ship was far too high. None of them could see anything but the massive sails and some ropes.
"What in the hell is that?" David asked.
"It's a dirigible ─ from The Land of Untold Stories," said Dr. Jekyll. He wore a confused expression and tilted his head to the side, intrigued by its presence in Storybrooke.
"What's it doing in our town?" Snow White asked him.
"I believe you mean my town."
All heads turned, save for Teresa's. The platinum-blonde felt her insides churn at the sound of his voice. The last time she had heard Hyde's voice was in her dream. Her wide eyes found Regina's, and the paired seemed to have a silent conversation, Regina's concerned gaze asking if she was okay. Teresa swallowed. She gave the woman a small nod before finally allowing her eyes to land on Hyde.
The smug man stood beyond the tree line on their right. They hadn't seen the man in over a week, the sudden disappearance drawing much suspicion.
Henry shuffled closer to his girlfriend, his brown eyes narrowing on Hyde.
Snow White scowled. She took a threatening step towards the man; her fist tightened around her bow. "This is not your town."
Hyde smirked at her confidence. "Oh, tell that to the Dark One. He gave it to me."
Teresa's brows furrowed. She exchanged a glance with Henry, who appeared just as confused as herself. Why would Gold just hand the town over to him like it was nothing? Like he wasn't also handing over the safety of everyone who lived in Storybrooke. Were they plotting together?
Wouldn't surprise me.
"Tell me, how is my dear friend Mary Poppins doing?" Hyde asked, and Regina and Teresa felt the air leave their lungs for a moment at the mention of the bashful brunette.
"There is no Mary Poppins in Storybrooke," Emma informed him, causing Hyde to grin.
"Now that is a lie, Savior." Hyde shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "I had a dear friend Mary Poppins who was so generously brewing an elixir for me. And now, for the life of me, I cannot seem to locate her. Judging by the odd silence from Miss Holmes, I presume you, in fact, have seen my friend."
All eyes fell on Teresa for a moment, and the archer almost collapsed beneath the intensity of their stares.
"What's he talking about, Teresa?" Henry murmured. She said nothing in reply. Teresa didn't glance at him either, which caused him to wonder what she was withholding from them... from him.
Does her strange silence have anything to do with the dream she had?
Oh, how he wished she never had that dream. Each day that passed, Henry can see her struggling more with it, changing her way of life.
"Perhaps my dear friend has informed you what I plan to do with the elixir. I presume that is why you have not spoken. Am I to assume correctly, Miss Holmes?" Hyde titled his head to the side, a smirk curling onto his face. His eyes filled with amusement as he met her stare. "You are being strangely silent. Usually, you Holmes' are far more voluble."
Teresa's lips separated in surprise, her reaction producing a smirk of satisfaction to the villain's face.
You Holmes'.
Does he know my family? My father? Or is he just playing mind games with me? She had so many questions to ask him, but she could hardly even breathe let alone speak.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I must prepare for my friends' arrival. And do not fret, Miss Holmes, I need not Mary Poppins to produce such a... glorious potion." Hyde gave them another smile before turning on his heel and walking away. Emma glared after him and spared Regina and Teresa a quick glance.
"Regina? Teresa?" The Savior whispered.
"Emma." Regina stepped forward, coming up beside Emma, and whispering, "My evil half is gone. I don't know how strong I am. And... I don't think Teresa is in the right state to help. She's..." The woman glanced toward Teresa, who was staring wide-eyed at the place Hyde once stood, her skin pale and mind trapped in her own thoughts. "The archer's been ─ "
Teresa cut her off. "The archer can speak for herself." Everyone glanced toward the platinum-blonde, watching as she reached a hand up and ripped her pendant from around her neck. The magic flowed through her body in a rush, the cold flooding her veins with so much strength that the girl stumbled.
Henry grasped her arm to keep her upright. "Teresa!"
The platinum-blonde gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm all right." Teresa laid the pendant in his empty palm before stepping forward to join Emma. "I won't stand idly by and let him build an army against us." She met Emma's gaze and gave the blonde a stern nod. "I'm with you."
Emma nodded back, then turned to face Regina. "Evil did not make you strong. Let's do this." The Savior switched her gaze from Regina to Hyde and shouted, "Hey! Muttonchops!"
The moment Hyde turned around with his usual smug expression etched upon his face, Teresa, Emma, and Regina thrust their hands forward and magic burst from their palms. A mixture of pale blue, white and red collided with Hyde, causing the man to groan and fall over, an arm curling around his stomach and making Teresa smirk. The sound of his pain brought her satisfaction. His cries were drowning out the choked sounds of both her and Henry's deaths from her dream. Watching him suffer have her pleasure, something she wasn't expecting to feel after so much fear had taken over.
Henry shifted on his feet as a series of gasps fell from the mouths of those around them.
After a moment, Hyde straightened his spine, seeming to be unaffected by their magic. The man laughed and stepped to the side, causing their magic to collide with a rock, which first froze over before being blown to smithereens upon contact. Teresa, Emma and Regina's eyes widened in surprise as they wondered what could have gone wrong with their magic. Emma was the Savior, her magic would have worked... right?
"A word of advice ─ do be careful. Nothing more dangerous than an untold story ─ " Hyde pointed toward the dirigible that carried his people " ─ and the people who don't want them told."
A whirring of metal and wind sounded from above them, drawing their eyes away from Hyde and to the dirigible. The flying ship began to spiral downward and after a moment, they could hear a loud crash as it landed in the middle of the woods. Flicking their gaze to where Hyde once stood, they found him gone. Teresa's fists clenched and her nostrils flared as her hard blue eyes glared at the woods where she suspected he ran off to. She wasn't so scared of the man anymore. All she felt was anger. So much anger, that a cold wind began to rush around them, flinging hair and emitting gasps.
Henry rushed forward and stepped in front of her vision, placing his hands on her arms and giving her a small shake which brought her gaze to his own. The amount of rage in her eyes surprised him. "Teresa, hey, it's okay. We'll get him. But you need to calm down before you freeze the town."
The platinum-blonde blinked and looked around them, watching as flurries danced around her head. Snow White gave her a small smile. "Sorry, I just..."
"It's okay," Henry spoke reassuringly. He reached into his jacket pocket and took out her pendant. Even though he hated that she wore it, as it made him feel like she didn't trust herself as he trusted her, he would not judge her. He understood that she was struggling with something right now.
"Do you want this back?"
Teresa hesitated. "No. No, I'm okay. Why don't you just hold on to it for me?" Henry smiled and nodded his head while stuffing the pendant back into his pocket.
"We have to get there before Hyde does," Snow White stressed.
"Snow's right," David agreed immediately. "If Hyde gets there before us, we won't know how many of his people he's brought here. If we get there first, maybe we can contain them and keep them at the station while we question their arrival."
Snow White frowned. "And make them our prisoners? David... what if some of these people are innocent?"
"Well, we won't know until we meet them," Emma said. "Let's go."
。。。
The crash site was a disaster. Pieces of metal, wood and torn material from the sails, along with strands of rope, scattered the woods floor. Trees broke from the landing, branches covering the ground. There were even small markings of blood, making it clear someone became injured from the rough landing. Yet there was nobody in sight. Not a single soul.
Emma headed toward the dirigible, approaching the inner cabin for any sign of life while the rest of them kept looking around.
Teresa stood with Henry until she noticed scuff marks in the dirt that brought out her tracker abilities. She parted from her boyfriend, her cerulean-blue eyes following the trails. She discovered that they branch off in multiple directions. It seemed none of these people wanted to remain together, some going east, some going west and others traveling northeast. But why would they split up if Hyde brought them here to work together? It made no sense.
"Nobody in here," Emma called out from the dirigible.
David sighed. "Where the hell is everyone?"
"Somewhere in the woods," Teresa said. Killian and Snow White came up beside her. "The scuff marks are wild so I can't tell exactly how many people there are, but look." She pointed toward the foot markings. "By the looks of the spacing, they were running. And none branched off, too, but why is the question. If Hyde brought them here to work together, then why split up?"
"What does Hyde want with them?" Snow White wondered, turning to look at Jekyll, who just may have the answer.
Jekyll shrugged. "It's hard to tell. Depending on who he brought with him, these stories playing out could create chaos."
"Well, that's helpful," Regina remarked.
"But all may not be lost," said Jekyll. He glanced toward Teresa, David, Snow White, and Killian, the four who bore witness to the events that took place at the Land of Untold Stories. "You recall the orderly's baton we used to subdue Hyde in our realm? Well, that same technology made the dirigible. With the wreckage, I may be able to scavenge what I need to make a weapon that could work on him. It's the only thing I've ever seen that can bring him down."
"Well," David sighed, "let's get salvaging."
。。。
It didn't take a lot of time for Jekyll to manufacture the weapon that could take down Hyde. The moment Jekyll finished building the weapon, Emma, Killian, Regina, Snow White, and David all went to face Hyde. Their plan worked, as Hyde now remained behind a metal door in the same room they previously had a pregnant Zelena Mills locked up in. When the news had reached Teresa, she had felt so much relief she couldn't help but kiss her boyfriend.
After her relief had dialed down a few notches, she wanted to confront Hyde alone. Ever since he brought up her family, it's been the only thing that she can think about. And if she didn't discover what Hyde knew, it would kill her. And, most likely, keep her up at night. So the platinum-blonde used her magic and with a wave of her hand, she was vanishing in a swirl of white flurries and landing in the cell of one Mr. Hyde.
The man smirked as he turned away from the window he was looking out of, brown meeting blue. "I knew you would come, eventually. The curiosity of a Holmes is a powerful trait."
Teresa set her jaw and got straight the point. "What do you know about my family?"
"More than you, child."
"Keep calling me a child and we'll see how that works out for you," she snapped. "Now I won't ask a third time ─ what do you know?"
Hyde shook his shackles. "Why don't you take these off of me and see how that works out for you?"
"You said you knew my family." Teresa walked up to him, her fingers coated with ice at the closeness with the man that's been haunting her mind for days. "Apparently rather well."
"Teresa." A small smile curved onto his face as Hyde leaned up against the wall, just near the window where sunlight streamed in against their faces. "You were a prisoner once. You know how this works."
Teresa's eyebrows furrowed. It was true. She has seen the inside of a cell three times in her life, but how could Hyde know that? Save for the time she was his prisoner once.
"What makes you think I was a prisoner?"
"Oh come now, Teresa. You very well know that I was once a warden. I know that caged look. That's a look that doesn't quite fade." Hyde pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer, coming face to face with the platinum-blonde whose ice magic radiated so in her fingertips that her hand began to tremble. "So you must know that prisoners respond to carrots and sticks, and you brought neither. Next time, try a bottle of Syrah and two glasses. Well, perhaps only one. You are only sixteen and we wouldn't want the Savior to have you share a cell with me under-aged drinking of alcohol, now would we?" The man grinned.
Teresa narrowed her eyes. "You've never met my family before... have you? You only said that to get in my head." When Hyde remained silent, the platinum-blonde scoffed and began making her way toward the door to leave.
"On the contrary, Miss Holmes. I know your family well. Your father, why he ─ " Hyde let out a breathless laugh.
Teresa gritted her teeth and turned around, hoping this wasn't some sick game he was playing with her. "What about my father?"
"I'm sorry ─ I thought you were just leaving."
Teresa glared at the smug expression he wore while sitting on his cot before heaving a sigh. "Fine, okay, you're right. I was a prisoner. Three times, in fact. All the others would tell me that loneliness was the worst part of it. But, unlike you, I was used to being alone. In fact, I had gained patience from it. You, however, like to run your mouth." Hyde chuckled.
"So, you can either tell me what you know about my family... or I'll walk out of here, and I will not come back with your precious wine. I just won't come back. And I will make sure that nobody will ever walk through that door." Teresa stood and began heading for the door. "You can just sit here in silence, and you can rot for all I care."
"So you did come with a stick after all. That's very impressive, Miss Holmes. Except for one small thing." In a flash, Hyde had lunged for her neck and Teresa threw her back against the wall, a breathless gasp emitting from her lips. Hyde couldn't reach her, the chains forbidding him from moving any closer, but that did nothing to stop the fear that returned once more. Flurries danced in the room, causing the man to smirk.
"You are afraid of me, aren't you?" Hyde drew his finger across her skin, causing her to shudder and move away from his touch. "I suppose that has to do with Mary Poppins. The girl never could keep her mouth shut." He titled his head to the side, staring toward her in satisfaction as the temperature in the room dropped so much that the man could now see his breath. "Or, perhaps, you are a coward just like your father. Are you sure you are ready to face the truth behind who you are, Teresa Holmes? Your father abandoned your family. He left your mother to raise you alone and, well, we know how that turned out now, don't we? For the life of me, I can't seem to understand why you would want a man like Sherlock Holmes in your life." In one swift movement, Hyde pulled his hands away from her face, causing the chains binding his wrists together to rattle and the girl to shudder at the noise of them.
Teresa didn't waste a moment. She teleported herself out of his cell in a canopy of white flurries as fast as she could.
。。。
That evening, everyone split up in groups of two to cover more ground while searching Hyde's people in the woods. Snow White went with David, Emma went with Killian, Teresa went with Henry, and Regina went alone. Apparently, Regina had a falling out with Zelena this afternoon and now the sisters wouldn't be moving in together as they once planned, as Regina still blamed Zelena for Robin Hood's death. Not that Teresa could blame her. If Zelena hadn't sided with Hades, Robin never would have had to sacrifice himself to save Regina's life. Then, Regina wouldn't have lost yet another person she loves, and Teresa wouldn't have lost the only father figure she's ever had.
Teresa walked in comfortable silence beside her boyfriend, who wielded her bow and arrow. She had equipped him with a set of weapons before they departed into the woods, as he needed them more than she did considering the magic that runs through her veins. Plus, it was the only way Emma and Regina would allow him to accompany Teresa on her search, even if he may be a growing boy old enough to protect himself from the dangers of the world.
"Hey, are you okay?" Henry asked, concern dripping off each syllable.
Teresa didn't glance up from the dirt as she answered. "What makes you think something's wrong?"
"Hyde called you out about someone named Mary Poppins whose brewing him some kind of potion, and then you just space out. That's unlike you." He grasped her wrist, bringing her to a stop. "Teresa, what was he talking about? And don't you dare say nothing."
"It is nothing, Henry. Regina and I ran into someone named Mary Poppins and she explained to us how Hyde wanted her to brew a potion. But she didn't want to be his slave anymore, so she ran the first chance she got and literally ran into me. Regina and I have been hiding Mary in Regina's sealed up vault ever since, sneaking her food and whatever else she needs. But now that we've captured Hyde, Regina will most likely set her free." She hated lying to Henry, but technically, she wasn't lying. She was only withholding certain aspects of the truth.
"What kind of potion did Hyde want her to make?"
Damn it.
Teresa shrugged and averted her gaze as she resumed walking. "She didn't say."
"Did ─ "
The sound of a twig snapping caused Teresa to slap her hand over Henry's mouth. "Sh! Did you hear that?" She whispered.
Teresa's ears picked up another sound, this sounding more like a cry of pain from a woman, so she motioned her boyfriend forward. "Come on," she whispered. She felt her hand radiate with magic as she effortlessly walked through the dark woods with her boyfriend behind her.
Teresa followed the whimpers until coming upon what appeared to be three figures, two of whom were leaning over the whimpering female sprawled out the ground in front of them. The platinum-blonde was ready to approach them, when suddenly, Henry made the clumsy mistake of accidentally stepping on a twig, why alerted the three dark figures beyond the brush of their presence.
"What was that?" asked the female. Her voice sounded pained. Teresa's train of thought traveled back to that afternoon and how they found blood at the crash site. Did it belong to this woman?
"I don't know," said one of the two men. He kept his hand pressed against the woman's abdomen, most likely adding pressure on her wound.
The last of the three figures is also male. He stood and pointed a sword toward the brush Teresa and Henry were ducking behind. "Who's there?" He asked, voice stern, and a little shaken up, most likely from the unknown territory.
Teresa silently cursed her boyfriend, shooting him a quick look before jumping out beyond the brush to face the strangers. She thrust her hands forward, bringing on a cold wind that knocked the man's sword from his hand and a few feet away. The three figures gasped, but before either male could do a thing, Teresa had frozen the ground at their feet, keeping them in their place.
"Who are you?" The platinum-blonde demanded, hands out and ready to use more magic. Henry appeared at her side, bowstring pulled back, an arrow ready to fire.
"They are just children," the woman breathed through her pain.
Teresa rolled her eyes. "I asked you a question! Who are you and why did Hyde bring you here?"
"Okay, okay!" The male who previously held the sword exclaimed. "Look, we mean you no harm. I swear it on my life. We came to this land, not for Hyde, but to escape the Land of Untold Stories."
"Why?" Teresa questioned.
"Because we do not belong there. We escaped only to the Land of Untold Stories for our safety but Hyde, he is a cruel man. He would do terrible things. I feared for my sister's life living on those streets." Teresa and Henry's eyes swept down to the woman in pain, who was clutching onto the man beside her as if her life depended on it. "I found us safe passage aboard the dirigible, though it appears I now regret my actions."
Even in the darkness of the woods, Teresa and Henry could see the guilt swimming in his dark brown eyes. "The landing was not so pleasant, and now my sister will not stop bleeding. Something penetrated her stomach."
"If you wanted to escape Hyde, why come here?" Teresa questioned.
"Do you mean to say that Hyde is in this land?" The other male inquired.
"He's been here for over a week," Henry informed.
The brother of the woman sighed heavily through his nostrils and ran a hand down his stubbled face. "Can you please help us? My sister needs to have her wound cleaned before it festers."
Teresa and Henry exchanged a look. A long moment passed before Teresa finally nodded and used her magic to release them. "We can help you, but in order for us to trust you, we will need your weapons. Only then will we help your sister. You have my word."
"How do we know we can trust you?" The male asked as he wrapped his arms around the woman, placing a reassuring kiss to her temple. "I have known magically beings in my life and none have been so kind as to offer their help. What makes you any different?"
"Because I have a heart, unlike some people. Now, if you would rather stay out here and starve to death and allow your sister's wound to fester, I suggest you hand over your weapons and come with us."
"Kit," the woman said, cringing in pain as she sat up in his arms. "We must trust them. If they wanted to harm us, they would have so already. Besides, they have warned us that Hyde now lives in this land. We should be grateful for their benevolence."
The man, Kit, nodded his head. "All right."
The woman smiled at them despite her and pain as the man named Kit helped her to her feet. "My name is Calista. And this is my husband, Kit and my brother, Soren."
"I'm Teresa Holmes, this is Henry Mills."
Soren walked forward and placed their weapons into Henry's arms. "Thank you both for your trust and generosity. I cannot even express my gratitude. If her wound had become festered..."
Teresa smiled. "You're welcome. Now, we better hurry because although I have magic, I'm not that great at healing people and she looks like she needed to see a doctor hours ago."
。。。
A/N: Well you guys, what did you think? You got your first peek at Sherlock Holmes and even got to meet my friend pseudonym-lux's characters that won in the Arrow contest a long time ago. You can read Kit, Calitsa and Soren's story in her book, The Rose Promise.
And just a reminder: this is a season six AU so Emma should technically be experiencing her tremors right now, but in my book she will not start having them until act three, when the whole Savior subject is brought to light. This act will only be based on Hyde and the Evil Queen. We'll get to the Savior stuff later.
