Chapter 13: Connecting Hearts

"Did you light the skies?" Sandy signed.

"Yes. Jack and Y/N should be arriving any minute now." North said.

Bunny angrily smacked his grey paws on a table

"Why did we even tell her that she was free to go? What if she doesn't come back? What if she refuses to go back? Whose fault would that be?" Bunny said angrily.

"Y/N will come back. She has to go back. She's wearing Pandora's Lock. It glows and takes her back here when we need her. And besides she can't always stay her, it was Manny's idea to let her out. She is not a prisoner here, Bunny." North said calmly.

"What if she breaks it?"

"That's impossible. I have the key." North said, holding up a silver ring with only a golden key on it.

"But--"

"Bunny, trust her. She'll come back. Just wait." Tooth said in her soothing voice as she placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I trusted her once and she broke that trust. I'm not going to do it again." Bunny said angrily.

Just then a silver misty glow appeared in the room. The Guardians raised their weapons in defense but lowered them when they saw the two missing Guardians.

"Y/N, you made it! And you brought back Jack!" North said happily.

"Jack! You're okay!" Tooth said as she flew to him and embraced him.

"Jack!" Sandy signed a snowflake meaning Jack and hugged him as well.

"Woah, okay. I'm okay." Jack said, hugging the worried Sandy and Tooth.

"Good to know you're okay, mate." Bunny said, relieved.

"Aw, did you miss me, Cottontail?" Jack teased as the Sandman and the Queen of the Fairies let him go.

"You wish!"

Y/N giggles softly. Bunny, then, saw Y/N and his furry face turned into an angry expression.

"Y/N L/N! Do you have any idea how long you've been gone?!" Bunny shouted angrily.

"You're happy to see Jack but not me? That kinda hurts." Y/N pouts playfully and puts a hand on her chest.

"L/N, I'm not in the mood to play your games. You've been gone the whole afternoon! You had us worried sick! When we told you, you had your freedom, it didn't exactly mean to worry us about your whereabouts!" Bunny said angrily.

"Bunny, it's okay. She's okay. Y/N just wanted a breather, you know?" Tooth said.

"Aw, you were worried? About me? That's so kind. Who knew you had a heart." Y/N teased.

Bunny's fur turned red from anger. North elbowed you in the stomach. You turned to glare at him but saw the deadly aura surrounding him. You rolled your eyes.

"Well, I humbly apologize, your furball-ness." You said sarcastically.

"You don't seem sorry, L/N! You could at least left a note to tell us where you were, instead you ran off like a child!" Bunny shouted.

"That's because I am not a child anymore. I can make my own choices now. I'm not 118 anymore. It's bad enough I have to wear this stupid lock and keep me here as if I'm a prisoner. Can I at least have my privacy?" You replied, annoyed.

"You have privacy L/N!"

"Yeah, privacy that everyone can see what I'm doing!" Anger was starting to build in Y/N.

"We just wanted to know if your still in your room."

"Nevermind! Next time, I'll let you know where I am, so you can follow me and supervise me like a little child! You said angrily.

Bunny said nothing and just angrily stomped out of the room. You turned around to not face him and crossed your arms against your chest angrily.

"Bunny!" Tooth called after him.

"Y/N L/N! You should at least be considerate!" Tooth scolded.

Y/N's eyes twitched in anger. Blood boiled furiously in her.

"Wha- How is this my fault?! He's the one who's all short-tempered!" Y/N said with anger in her voice and her finger pointing at the direction he left.

Y/N wanted to scream and say every mean curse that there is to let her see that Bunny was being the inconsiderate one. But she knew if she did, she'd just get in big trouble, so she angrily left the room and ran to the stairs that lead to the roof of North's workshop.

When she reached the latch door to the roof, Y/N threw it open and glared at the beautiful twinkling night sky with her grandfather and her mother, shining bright.

Y/N screamed.

Y/N screamed at the top of her lungs since she knew no one at the workshop would hear her from the noise from below. As she screamed, she felt tears run down her pale cheek. She couldn't take it anymore; Bunny's anger, being a prisoner at the workshop, everyone siding with the Guardians and being chosen as a Guardian.

"Do you come here often too?" A soft and gentle voice came from behind you. Y/N didn't need to turn around to figure out who it was.

She wiped the tears away and took a deep breath before speaking.

"What the hell do you want, Sandy?" Y/N asked rather rudely and anger dripping with every word she said.

Sandy stopped in his tracks and suddenly went quiet. He floated a few inches above the ground and looked away with slight embarrassment and fear in his eyes.

Y/N, suddenly realizing her mistake, turned around and faced Sandy with an apologetic expression plastered on her face. Guilt squeezed her heart so bad that it was like she couldn't breath as she stared at the floating small, chubby man that was awkwardly quiet.

Y/N bit her bottom lip and tried to say anything to Sandy. But before she could, he floated towards her and sat down on the rough roof. He patted the open space beside him. Y/N quietly sat down beside Sandy without any sassy or rude comment.

You both stared at the majestic scenery in front of you with the wind softly blowing at both your hair.

"Sandy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have answered you like that. Knowing about your sickness doesn't help either with the way I treated you." Y/N said, breaking the silence that engulfed you both. She bowed her head in shame with her eyes closed tightly shut, making it lose contact with the beautiful night art that was ever before their eyes.

Sandy had Selective Mutism . He was like this for as long as she could remember. He tried to change but he just couldn't and was satisfied with making dream sand signs appear on top of his head. He would speak to you and North with his own voice when he is most calm. You met Sandy and North way before you met Kyle and the others. But he doesn't tell anyone of his illness, he just reasons that he stays quiet as to that the children won't be woken up (which is a half-truth).

Sandy is the First Guardian to be chosen by her grandfather. North is the Second Guardian to be chosen. Whilst Bunny, Tooth and Jack were chosen first before her, Y/N is way older than the three of them, Manny didn't choose her as a Guardian back then, she was chosen only a hundred years ago and now. It was still a mystery for her but she knew better than to question her grandfathers decisions. She knew he knew better than her and the Guardians and had a reason for doing things.

She felt a chubby petite hand land on her pale shoulder. She slowly opened her eyes to see the look on her gold haired friend, a soft and kind smile on his round face.

"It's okay. I know you've been having it tough these past few days and with Bunny fighting and getting angry for no reason at all, it could get very stressful and pressuring." Sandy said warmly, comforting her.

"Thanks Sandy." Y/M said with a warm and grateful smile.

"Are you okay? I heard you crying and screaming up here a while ago."

Y/N shook her head.

"I finally found my reason why I was roaming here for decades. But it was annoying that the others couldn't accept the fact that I don't wanna be a Guardian. I get it that they didn't either but I'm still guilty about Kyle..." You trailed off, not wanted to finish the sentence.

"That he'd might think you're betraying him?" Y/N nodded slowly.

"You know, when Manny first picked me as the Guardian of Dreams, I wasn't prepared, mentally and physically... All my life, I was just an ordinary star pilot that just did his job like any star pilot. But when he picked me. I was scared... I was scared that the few friends I had would think I betrayed them, that they wouldn't wanna talk to me every again. But they didn't, they actually supported and encouraged me to accept the offer. Today, we're still friends and we'll always be." Sandy said with a smile on his plump face.

He turned and held the pale hands of his friend with a warm and comforting smile on his face.

"Y/N, Kyle would've wanted you to accept this. He would never hate you for it. If he does, then that's his problem, okay? Me, Manny and all the other Guardians are here for you, always. Okay?" Y/N looked into his golden eyes and nodded with a smile.

The smile on the Sandman grew wider and hugged his old friend.

"Thanks Sandy. You're the best." Y/N whispered.

"Anytime..." Sandy have off one last smile before heading back down the stairs to talk with the others.

Y/N was left alone with the majestic scenery. With one last look at the sky and a sigh, she stood up, head back down the stairs and went to her prison-like room. She grabbed her crooked old bow and quiver of arrows. She stretched the string on her bow to see if it was still usable, yo her dismay, the string snapped between her fingers, leaving a thin red mark.

"I think your bow needs replacing." A smooth voice fro, the doorway said.

Y/N looked up to see the Guardian of Fun leaning against the doorway of your room, one hand was in his frosted blue old sweater while the other was holding on to his G-shaped crooked staff, a playful smirk across his pale, young, handsome face.

"No, it just needs a new string." Y/N said while going through her drawers to find a strong piece of string for your bow.

"You sure? That bow looks like it's too old to work again." Jack said as he walked to your room with his staff.

Y/N found a clean white string, she tugged on it hard with both of her hands and found it hard to snap. She quickly spun to Jack.

"That staff looks like it's too old to function. Why don't you change it?" Y/N said with her arms crossed.

Jack hugged his staff, like she was gonna take it away from him.

"I can't change my staff. This is the source of my power. Without it, I wouldn't be Jack Frost." Jack said.

"Same goes for my bow. Manny gave it to me. It was a crooked old thing but I work with what I'm given. Besides, this thing has been with me since I was reborn." She said, tying the string to the bow.

"Anyway, what are you doing here? Need anything?" She said, changing the subject.

"A while ago, you said, you weren't a 118 anymore. I was just wondering, how old exactly are you? You look my age but you act and talk like you've seen so much." Jack said, sitting down on your bed.

"Older than you, that's for sure." Y/N said, still tying the string to the bow.

"That's not an answer. You have to give me a number." Jack said. She could almost hear the desperation in his voice.

"Why? If I did, would you tell me yours and why your arm was bleeding, just before you disappeared?" Y/N asked with a hint of mischief and curiosity in her eyes.

"That's not fair! That's two things."

"You'd be surprised to hear my age so it would be equivalent to two questions." Y/N said as she finished knotting the strong to your bow.

"Argh, fine. But don't you dare try to trick me, L/N." Jack threatened.

"Relax, Snowball. I always keep my end of the deal as long as you keep yours." Y/N said with sincerity evident in her voice.

She took out her pale hand. Jack must have caught on, he took out his ice-cold hand. They both shook hands. His freezing cold palm sent shivers across your spine. You instantly pulled your hand away from the walking ice freezer

"I look like a 17 year old kid but in reality, I'm 400 years old. My arm was bleeding because I was accidentally cut deeply by an immortal weapon when I was practicing with my staff at the training room." Jack said and looked intently into Y/N's eyes, awaiting for her answer.

"I died at the age of 17 but I was born way before you if I am not wrong. I was reborn when everything was old fashioned. So basically, I'm over 800 years old, I'm 927 years old, turning 928 in a few weeks time." Y/N said shrugging her shoulders like it wasn't a big deal.

Jack choked on his own saliva when he heard of her answer. He coughed a few times before regaining his composure. Turns out her answer was worth two questions.

"Y-Y-You're kidding, right? 927 years old... If you're that old, then, you're than Bunny, Tooth and I... You're like a great-great-great-great-great-great-something grandma." Jack said astonished, his jaw falling.

"Okay, for offence, it just means we were born earlier than any of you guys. And don't call me that, it's bad enough that I'm older than the three of you, don't make it sound so bad." Y/N said.

"Maybe I should call you that, great-something grandma." Jack teased.

I squinted my eyes annoyed at him and rolled my eyes.

"Whatever, Popsicle."

Ask Sandy or North. They'll tell you the exact same thing..." Y/N said, crossing her arms while looking at the 400 year old boy in front of her.

"Nope, I believe you, completely." Jack shook his head. Y/N raised an eyebrow.

"Really? Why?"

"Just had a feeling that I should. You were always right at the previous missions. Besides you said that you keep your end of the deal as long as I keep mine, and I did, so you must as well." Jack said.

"Hn..." Y/N shrugged and nodded her head.

Then they felt the ground shake for about 15 seconds. They both ducked and placed their hands protectively above their heads.

"What's happening?" You asked.

"I don't know." Jack replied with worry evident in his voice.

Glass window shards on the floor. All of Y/N's things was a mess. The room looked like a tornado came inside.

"What the heck was that?" Jack asked, mostly to himself.

Y/N grabbed her bow and quiver of arrows. Y/N and Jack ran (Jack flew) down the stairs the fastest they could, wanting to know what caused the slight earthquake earlier.

When they arrived at the Globe Room, it was a mess as well. The stacks of toys were destroyed and numerous toys, broken and unbroken, lay on the ground messily. Yetis were hiding under the wooden tables. Elves were at the corners, shaking in fear. There were some glass shards on the floor. The Guardians were ducked on the floor with golden dream sand above their heads, protecting them from the glass shards and the fallen toys.

You and Jack ran to the others and helped them up.

"Are you guys okay?" Jack asked as he held out a hand to help the Tooth Fairy Queen.

Tooth nodded.

"Yeah, but that short earthquake really caused a mess." Tooth said as she took a look at the room.

"Is everyone okay?" North asked his friends. Everyone nodded in reply.

At the corner of her eye, Y/N spotted something dark purple, black and grainy scattered at the floor. Y/N heard the others bickering and teasing each other but ignored them. You picked it up and examined it within your fingers.

"Whatcha got there, Shorty?" Jack teased you from behind.

"I don't know exactly..." Y/N said. Jack looked from your shoulder from what you were looking at. His smile faded when he saw it and instead, horror and sternness was replaced in his features.

"Guys, I think you should see this." Jack said in a stern voice. The others approached him. Jack picked up the sand and showed it to the others. Their faces turned the same like Jacks. You were confused by this.

"What is it?" You asked with your voice full of curiosity.

"They found out I caused the slight earthquake..." A familiar yet disgusting and sickly voice answered your question.

Your eyes widened at shock and fear, as you turned around to face the owners of the voice that answered you.

The owner had sickly grey pale skin, creepy yellowish orbs that pierced your soul and spiky black hair that was darker than the night sky. He was wearing black robes that made him completely invisible in the nights he would hide under beds. He had a creepy killer smile, showing off his crooked and slightly yellow teeth that would make you want to crawl under your bed sheets or hug your mother for safe keeping.

"Pitch..." Jack spit out the name with anger and sternness.

The Guardians readied their weapons and themselves for any other attack that their old "friend" held for them. But it wasn't Pitch that what shocked you, it was the boy that stood beside him, hidden in the shadows, but you saw him.

The boy had black hair that was darker than the night sky without its stars and swayed to the right side of his face, lifeless, dull and sickly green eyes that made him stand out in the shadows and had the same sickly grey pale skin like Pitch. He was wearing black robes that hung on his figure perfectly.

"Kyle...?" Y/N said in a soft-whispered voice.

The boy stepped out of the shadows and grinned a creepy killer smile with the same crooked and slightly yellow teeth like his partner.

"Hello, Y/N, it's nice to see you again." Your long-time dead friend/crush, Kyle, said with a strange and unfamiliar aura surrounding him
