Chapter .25
There I was.
Front seat.
Shade off.
Sunglasses and window down.
And Red Red Wine
"No girlfriend still?" Brady asked, looking over at me.
"If I did, I swear I would've told you," I crossed my chest.
"Kane, you gotta come on man. Find you a girl like Easton," He grinned and looked back toward the road. Both hands on the wheel.
"You're ignorant, no one's like her," I said, grinning back.
Easton was my brother's girl. She had dirty blond hair with pink highlights and always had her sunglasses on.
Brady was 17. He was saving up his tips from being a bartender at a nearby bar. He wanted a cabin on the shore. "Ya know, like, where you can see the sunset and there's coconut trees everywhere. Enjoying a nice Pina Colada," His exact words were.
I loved when it was just me and him. Though he's foolish, he's a blast.
"Dude, what about Spence?" Brady asked, raising his right eyebrow.
"Come on, she's just a friend!" I argued.
"More like a 'special' friend," He chuckled.
"I don't– like her– or nothin'" I went on, "just leave me alone about. I get tortured enough at school, jeez." I looked out the window.
"Okay dude, chill," Brady punched my shoulder.
"Fuck off," I whispered, hoping he couldn't hear me.
"Yo, watch your profanity," he laughed and turned up the radio.
Escape was playing.
"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain,"
"If you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain,"
"If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape,"
"I'm the love that you've looked for, write to me, and escape"
I nod my head to the rhythm.
We rolled up the driveway to the house and clicked off the radio.
Dad walked out through the garage.
"Hey guys," He said.
"Hi Dad," We both glanced at each other.
He walked out further.
"Are you okay?" He asked me.
"Duh. Why?"
He paused for a long moment.
"Spencer," he began.
"What about her? I told you already, I don't like her!" I shouted, quickly running into the house.
"KANE!" Dad was chasing after me.
I ran faster.
He latched into my arm.
"Spencer ran away," He breathed heavily.
I froze.
"I'm the love that you looked for, write to me, and escape,"
She finally did it.
Finally.
