Last day

Dallas

I tap the pen on the desk restlessly, glancing at the watch for the fifth time in last 10 minutes. Today's the day I finally get off school and do some traveling. With middle school graduation coming up, I've gotta plan my trip perfectly and also prepare for my valedictorian speech. It has to be perfect. Today is the last paper of our finals and then we're free birds before high school gets it's hands on us. The kids were all very moody as well as excited this morning. Excited because there's gonna be a long vacation and moody because it's history exam. Not a problem for me. I love history! The ringing of the bell snaps my attention back to reality replacing my thoughtful expression with a wide grin. The teacher stands up from her seat and starts collecting the answer sheets from the students according to their sequence on the attendance sheet. After collecting the papers from 3/4 th students of the class, Mrs. Owens make her way towards my seat.

"I'm guessing you probably aced the exam Ms. Marshal." He mumbles, with a chuckle.

"Always Mrs. Owens!" I grin and hold out my answer sheet towards her. She takes it and arranges it with the other sheets in a neat bundle and returns back to her chair.

"Okay kids! Today was your last exam and your last day in middle school. You guys are now grown ups and you'll start going to high school in not time. I want you all to remember that here on your life will be a little more complicated than before. You might have to take some difficult decisions too and study two times harder. But remember, you are a strong person and you can get through anything with strong determination and hard work. The path towards success is hard but it's worth it." She smiles, tearing up a little as she takes a quick glance at the class. "You can go now! Graduation is in a week so don't forget to be there. Bye!"

As soon as Mrs. Owens concludes her little speech, all the kids jump out of their seats. Some are waving their goodbyes, some are planning about where to dump their textbooks, some about vacation, whilst some discuss about grown up high school parties they'll get to attend in a few weeks. I make my way through the crowd, waving goodbyes and exit the classroom. The hallways are crowded as fuck as all the kids are out in there celebrating which my guess is puberty. Which probably hasn't hit to 90% of the crowd. I smile to myself and start walking towards my locker. I hope Abby is there already waiting for me because I have no time and mood to go look for her in the school. Pushing the thoughts and the overly excited children out of my way, I reach the locker. Inserting the code, I take out all my books, stickers, photos and stationary out of it and dump it in my bag. Suddenly a pair of arms wrap around my shoulder making me squeal.

"Hey D!!!" Abby squeals excitedly. I take a deep breath to calm myself. I'm not really good with surprise hugs. Or tackles in Abigail's case.

"Where were you?!" I ask her, still shoving stuff from locker down my bag pack.

"I was talking with Ashley and her friends and they invited us to the party at their house. As a celebration!" She speaks excitedly. Party? Me? No thanks!

"I'm sorry Abby," I mumble, turning to face her. "I can't come. It's Friday night." I tell her slapping my palms together.

"Oh cmon Dalla!" She whines. "One last party with me! You know I won't be here two weeks later." My heart sinks at her words. Abby is not going to be here for freshman year. She's moving to LA, aka changing schools. I still can't believe she's going. Why can't her father just stick to the firm they had here in Riverside?

"I still donno why you have to go!" I pout. "You know my mom considers you like her daughter right! You can stay here and maybe visit your parents on weekends."

"As much as I love the idea, I'm sorry D! I can't leave dad alone." She mumbles apologetically. Abby's mom died in a car crash when we were 7. We're best friends since then. "But its just one hour drive! We can visit each other on weekends! And as every year, Thanksgiving and Christmas is at your house." She assures me giving my shoulder a light squeeze.

"How will I ever survive high school without you?" I whine, pushing the crowd out of our way towards the exit.

"You don't have to my love! I'm gonna call you everyday and we're gonna be the same we are right now." She says, swinging her arm around my shoulders. Even though Abby's hardly 5'0 feet and me being 5'5 roughly, she has the confidence of a 6 feet person. Right now she's walking on her toes being uncomfortable as fuck, but that won't stop her from being cool.

"So about that party....." I mumble as we enter the parking lot, "I'm gonna think about it."

"Think?!!" Abby gasps dramatically, slapping her palm over her face. "After all the emotional act I put up right now and the puppy eyes that I was probably reserving for extra cake this afternoon, you're saying you're just gonna think about it?!" Abigail is a big box filled with 99% drama and 1% sanity. The girl's always on her horses which is one of the best things about her. After her mom, Mrs. Wesley passed away, she put on a brave face for her dad and faced it like no other 7 year old in the whole world can't. We've been close to Wesley's since then. For every thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays, mom dragged the Wesley asses at our home so they wouldn't be alone. My mom's probably just one step away from adopting Abby legally, that's how much she and my family loves her.

"You know how much I love Friday nights!" I pout as we start walking down the street to our homes. Abby and I live a few blocks away from each other and the school. So we basically walk home as my mom and dad leave for the daycare early in the morning and Abby's dad is at the office all day.

"One night! One night Dallas! I'm sure the novels won't miss you!" She smacks the back of my head playfully, earning a scowl from me. Friday nights are my favorite. Why do you ask? Well, every Friday I snuggle into my bed and read a novel for hours. I'm on Harry Potter, deathly hallows right now and I'm really looking forward to complete it. But I guess Abby's not gonna let me live if I don't attend the party.

"Fine! I'll ask mom and if she agrees, pick me at 7. Curfew's at 10." I scoff while she squeals and climbs on my back in excitement.

"Thank you so so much Dalla!!!! I love you so much!" She smiles widely pecking my cheeks. "Here you go milady! I'll call Mrs. Marshal once I get home and convince her to let you go to the party."

"Fine." I chuckle at her eagerness. "Bye bye and call me once you get home safely." She waves me frantically and disappears out of the street. I push open the door of my house and enter only to witness the mess Liam has created. Wrappers from the snacks are littered across the living room floor and loud music is pounding out of the speakers. I shut off the speakers, picking up the wrappers from the floor,

"Liam!!" I yell, because he's no where to be seen in the house. "Where are you?!" A minute later, I see him walking down the staircase with a half lit cigarette between his fingers as he takes a drag and scrunches his nose at me in annoyance.

"What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you yelling?" He spits at me annoyingly.

"What's wrong with me?! What's wrong with you!? Why are you smoking in the house again? And why's there so much mess in the living room?" I yell at him frustratingly. He shrugs rolling his eyes, straightening his shirt as a brunette girl walks from behind him with heels in her hand.

"It was nice to see you this morning, Liam." The girl whispers seductively, trailing her hand down my brother's chest. Ugh! Gross!

"It was nice to see you too baby. I hope I'll see you again." He whispers, pecking her lips. "Bye bye." The girl throws a weird look at me before wobbling out of the house.

"You're bringing girls into the house now? Have you gone crazy?" I scoff angrily. "What are you gonna do when mom and dad finds out?"

"They're not Dallas." He warns me. "If they do, I'm gonna mess your life." What! My own brother is threatening to mess up my life!? Pathetic.

"Liam, you're gonna be here just for a few days. After graduation, you'll off to college and there you can do and behave as you wish. But for now, please be decent." I mumble.

"Ya ya you don't need to lecture me little twit!" He groans. "Now make me some coffee while I get ready for the party this evening." He mumbles, and starts walking upstairs.

"I'm going to that party too..." He stops in his tracks as soon as the words leave my mouth. His face turns cold as he stares at me. "With Abby of course. Our friends are throwing a pre -graduation party and they invited us." I continue, my voice shaky.

"You're not going." He announces coldly. A stir of anger bubbles up inside my body as I stomp my foot on the floor angrily.

"You're not the boss of me Liam!" I yell. "You cannot tell me what do and what not to do. I can figure that myself. So stop acting over smart and stop interfering in my life decisions."

"This is not the middle school party you're expecting Dallas!" He snaps, making me flinch. "There's gonna be 100's of senior guys and booze in there and that is not the kind of party I can permit you to be a part of."

"Well good thing I didn't ask your permission!" I snap back. "I'm going and there's nothing you can do about it. You know I'm gonna stay away from booze and senior guys are gonna stay away from me. Everybody knows I'm Liam Marshal's sister." I mumble with a hint of pride reflecting my words.

"Well that's a shame." Liam whispers, making my heart sink.

Happy partying to me I guess.
