ch4
Leaning against the lamp post, Hyunho stared at the paper bag instead of a book like always. "Hey! Did you wait for too long?" Byeol suddenly appears beside him, clutching the straps of her backpack. She had the same bright smile she never ever forgot to wear ever since the first time they met. He shook his head and handed her the paper bag, not even sparing her a glance. "I passed by the doughnut shop."
She stared at his hand and then at him, smiling sheepishly without a word. Hyunho takes back his hand, "ah, you don't like doughnuts? It's fine, I'll just-" Byeol snatches it, "no," she smiles wider at him, "I like it." Those were her last words before she sprinted ahead, into the airport.
Hyunho tucked in both his hands in his pocket and quietly followed behind her. Soon, they boarded the plane for a quick flight to Jeju. Byeol had slept the entire hour while he killed time by reading some books.
By the time they had arrived at Jeju, the streets were pretty empty since it was getting late at night. Byeol had booked a hotel room, which was where they were off to at the moment. When they had arrived, Hyunho just sat in the lounge area, drinking banana milk that he had bought from the vending machine right when they got out the airport. Meanwhile, Byeol was talking to the receptionist. It seemed that there was a problem with the site she booked from.
"Uhh... I originally booked two rooms but they made a mistake and all those rooms are occupied now. They gave us the suite room instead, that's fine with you, right?" She forced a smile, and Hyunho simply nodded without a trace of disappointment in his face.
The room was spacious, with its own living room unlike the other ones. It even had a fascinating night view of city lights in the area. Just a little farther was the beautiful sea that anybody would want to visit. "Waaa, look at the huge bed!" Byeol jumps onto the thick, fluffy mattress that any child would dream of. She turns to him and he was already looking at her with a firm stare, "I'm sleeping on the couch."
"I'm going to shower," Hyunho says, closing the bathroom door behind him. Humming in response, Byeol finds herself deep in sleep after a little while. After he finished showering, he found the girl curled up on the couch, fast asleep. She gets tired too easily, mainly because of her heart disorder. He sighed and slipped his hands under her body, picking her up like she was light as a feather. Sure, she was, but he couldn't take off the fact that she must have been carrying a heavy weight in her chest - knowing she won't be here for too long. What can he do about it though?
Walking towards the bed, his mind was occupied with thoughts. Gently putting her down on the bed, he sits beside her, staring blankly. People often thought he had no emotions, but he just barely expressed any. In fact, he thought so too.
He wondered why heavens would want to take an innocent girl's life so early. What could she have done to deserve this? Hyunho noticed how her hair was a mess. He tucks in a few strands of hair behind her ear, face now cleared out from stray hair. She was pale but it was as if she was still smiling, though she was asleep.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Hyunho also wondered why he somehow seemed to care - even just a little bit. He was so uninterested about other people's life that he did not ever develop any relationship except with his parents. He stood up and walked over to the living room, cleaning up the empty water bottles and bag of chips Byeol had left. Picking up some of the bottles on the floor, his eyes accidentally land on a clear pouch. It had pills of all kinds, and a heart rate monitor watch. There was even a syringe inside - all of it looked quite terrifying. All this time he thought she was ready to die, when the truth was she was so afraid.
