Quirks of the Past
Izuku's second quirk was surprisingly Deadeye. He'd been skipping stones at Dagobah beach with his mother, when the stone hopped once, twice, three times, and kept going.
Izuku stared in shock, watching the stone jump off into the distance. The greenette frowned, choosing another stone.
This one made it over the horizon too.
"Deadeye. You can do a lot more than just skip stones with it you know. Anything you throw, you can control it, to an extent. Would you like to try?" Second asked.
Izuku nodded at his predecessor.
___________
Izuku was training Deadeye with Second one day when another quirk manifested. He'd dropped a stick, and reached out to grab it. A thin black tendril emerged from the back of his hand, lashing out and grabbing the stick, placing it gently into Izuku's hand.
Daigoro cheered, ruffling Izuku's hair.
"Nice one kid! Ya got my quirk now! We can get to training it straight away!" He exclaimed.
Izuku smiled at his predecessor.
"Yes Daigoro!"
________________
Izuku manifested Danger Sense during Second's 'surprise' Deadeye training. There was a quiet buzz in Izuku's mind, and he turned and caught Second's surprise projectile.
Hikage smiled.
"Danger Sense is a passive quirk, so it does not require much training. You just need to learn to interpret what the various alerts mean." He explained.
_______________
The Third's Brace manifested quite a while later. It was a semi passive quirk, but it further strengthened temporarily when activated. Second and Third had been teaching Izuku how to fight, just the basics of basics, and the greenette didn't even feel Second's swat at his head.
Thirds eyes lit up, and he grinned at Izuku.
"Alright buddy, Brace is a passive quirk, but you can power it up for a while by activating it! Training increases your durability over time, and eventually you'll be able to take buildings on your head!" He exclaimed, like an eager puppy.
Izuku laughed, smiling at his predecessor.
"Please teach me Third!"
____________
Smokescreen manifested during sparring. Izuku was trying to stay hidden, and a thick black fog rolled off of his body. En just chuckled quietly.
"Smokescreen is quite difficult to control, or restrain. Sometimes the smoke you release can be thicker than you want, because the quirk is influenced by your panicked mental state, and just wants you to be hidden from danger. It can be overcome with training." He said, his eyes curling into a smile.
Izuku waved the smoke away, nodding to his predecessor.
________________
It was when Izuku turned 11 that they began to believe something was wrong. He'd put on some decent muscle, and had trained the predecessor's quirks to mastery of them. The problem was...
He couldn't activate One for All itself.
Izuku could feel the energy buzzing just beneath his skin, but he couldn't quite pull it to the surface to use it. He couldn't use his strongest weapon against All for One. The past users of One for All were worried, but they hoped that UA could draw the quirk out. If it couldn't...
Then the world was screwed.
______________
Izuku managed to keep his quirks a secret from everyone else. Nobody questioned his strange 'sixth sense' or his insane aim with rocks, sticks and darts. His incredible durability was also explained away by tough training.
Blackwhip and Smokescreen were never revealed to others. Izuku made sure to only train those two in secret, in the forest behind his house.
The greenette was already an incredible combatant, both with and without his quirks. The predecessors just didn't know if it would be enough to defeat All for One without One for All.
_____________
"Young Izuku! We would like to speak with you." Toshinori said.
Izuku looked up from his homework.
"What is it?" He asked curiously.
The last time they'd asked to talk like this was when they warned him about All for One.
"It's about UA, or more specifically two of it's staff members." Nana said.
Izuku nodded, swiveling in his chair.
"Principal Nezu and the school nurse Recovery Girl both know about One for All. It is our belief that they can help you with One for All itself. My old teacher, Gran Torino, and sidekick Sir Nighteye also know of the quirk. I can tell you that they can without a doubt be trusted. It is ultimately your choice however." Toshinori explained.
"Nezu is extremely intelligent. He might be able to help you where we could not." Nana said.
Izuku nodded with a smile.
"If you think it's a good idea.. then I trust you. You guys haven't led me wrong yet. Except Daigoro. I mean seriously, what were you thinking? Ketchup?" Izuku asked.
Daigoro pouted in the corner, while the other ghosts chuckled at him. Nana patted Izuku's hair gently.
"Even if you don't get One for All in its entirety, I know you'll be an incredible hero." She said.
Izuku smiled.
"Thanks Mama."
_____________
Izuku waved to his mother as he floated up to the clouds, breaking through and looking around. A flash of red caught his eye in the distance, so Izuku approached it at top speed.
"Hey Keigo!" Izuku called.
The feathered hero in training turned to face the younger boy.
"Hey Izuku! How have you been doing?" He asked.
Izuku smiled.
"I've been fine. I finally figured out how to do that move you showed me. It's harder than it looks, especially without wings." He said.
Izuku did a tight spin in the air, turning it into a dive and a kick. Keigo clapped with a grin on his face.
"Nice one! You'll be as good as me before you even get to UA at this rate!"
Izuku huffed, a teasing smirk on his face.
"I am as good as you. Better even." He said.
Keigo chuckled, dropping into the dense clouds below their feet.
"Oh it's on!" He said.
Izuku floated down into the clouds, keeping Danger Sense trained on his brother.
A flurry of sharp feathers came flying out of a fluffy white cloud, which were quickly dodged by Izuku. The greenette caught one as it passed, and tossed it at where he sensed Keigo.
Deadeye kept it on track, forcing Keigo to doge out of the cloud. Izuku surged forwards, executing the aerial spinning kick he did before, throwing Keigo through a darker, denser cloud.
The winged boy threw some more feathers at Izuku, and was forced to dodge again as Izuku tossed another feather at him.
The sandy haired teen emerged from the darker cloud sopping wet, struggling to control his laughter.
They both charged, grappling with one another as they fell. Izuku grabbed onto Keigo's left wing, preventing it from moving.
"Are ya chicken?" Izuku asked.
The two boys fell for miles, both laying in the air lazily as they plummeted to the ground.
"I've gotten better at stopping suddenly Izu. You might want to give up this time!" Keigo called.
Izuku just grinned.
"My quirk protects me from high falls. I can hit the ground at terminal velocity and just get a headache." Izuku said.
Man, Brace was so useful.
Keigo looked disbelieving at first, but it slowly turned to panic as they neared the ground.
At ten meters up Keigo flapped his wings hard, stopping his descent.
Izuku stopped dead in the air, still in his relaxed position. He was a meter off the ground.
Izuku stuck out his elbows, wiggling his arms like small wings.
"Buck, buck BUCK!!" Izuku called up at the teen. Keigo huffed indignantly, taking off back into the sky.
"I'll be baaaack!!" He called.
