5 - YELLOW BLAZERS ARE SO LAST SEASON
IT WAS TIME FOR THE FIELD TRIP AND DIANA STILL HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHERE THEY WERE GOING. She walked with Flash towards the school, struggling to keep up despite being taller; he wasn't called Flash for nothing. Because they were going out on an excursion, they had to wear the school's required yellow blazers, a rule that they both reluctantly followed, noses wrinkling as they slowly donned the offensively bright article of clothing.
"I feel pretentious and ugly," Flash had commented as they rode the train, trying to ignore the looks they were receiving from the other passengers, most of whom still hadn't gotten their coffee and were thus upset at the screaming color invading their vision so early in the morning.
By the time they had reached their stop, they had gotten three rude comments, five pictures taken, and a lot of grumbling aimed in their direction. They really needed to have a conversation with the school and their design choices.
"Flash," Diana called out, trying to get him to slow down, "Where are we even going?"
The boy sighed and looked up at the sky, waiting for her to catch up, tapping his foot. "We're going to some science exhibit."
She scoffed, catching up to him, trying to keep his pace. "That's all you know?"
He shrugged, not even faltering. "That's all I had to know. C'mon, I don't wanna be late for E period, Ms. Warren hates me."
Sighing, Diana started to run, keeping up with Flash who broke out into what he called a jog. They made it to school with just enough time to get to their lockers, but by then Diana was wheezing, her blazer taken off in an effort not to wreck it before they even left for the field trip.
Diana sighed as she watched Flash run down the hall towards his classroom, calling out a short bye before disappearing around the corner.
She scoffed, throwing her blazer in her locker, mumbling to herself. "Flash Thompson? More like Jerk Thompson. Mr. I-Don't-Wait-For-Normal-People-Meh..."

They were scheduled to leave just after break, told to meet at the front of the school ten minutes after the bell rang for everyone else to get inside. Everyone had rushed to their lockers as soon as the bell rang, scrambling to grab their things in an effort to not get left behind.
"So," Gwen said as Diana grabbed her blazer out of her locker, "I'll sit with you while Harry sits with Flash. If we're going to buddy up, I'd rather buddy with someone who'll laugh at my science jokes." She cast a sour look up at Harry who tapped her nose, not looking up from his phone.
Diana laughed as Gwen huffed, walking towards Flash's locker. As they neared, they heard a voice say, "Flash, you're sitting by me on the bus ride, right?" They looked over to see Sally Avril leaning against Flash's locker, smiling up at him.
"I thought you were sitting by me," Jason Ionello said, tilting his head. The two were best of friends, so it was surprising for all, Diana included, that Sally wasn't going to sit with him.
"You'll be fine," Sally said, waving him off, still smiling at Flash.
"Actually," Gwen interrupted, stepping forward, "Flash is sitting with us." She motioned towards the three of them, noticing with a grimace that Sally's eyes raked over Harry's body with an appreciative smile.
"Well, too bad," the girl said, catching sight of Gwen's frown, "He's sitting with me."
"It's okay, you guys," Flash said, glancing over at his teammates who were standing nearby, "It's not a big deal."
Gwen frowned, crossing her arms. "You haven't sat with us the entire week, Flash Thompson. I thought we were friends."
"We are," Flash said, hurriedly, "It's just..." he looked over at his other friends, shrugging at the smaller girl.
Gwen sighed, "Whatever. Um..." she looked around the hall, eyes brightening, "Peter! Do you wanna sit with us? You'll be sitting with Harry, but we'll hang around each other, you know?"
Peter, who had his camera slung around his neck, fidgeted with his glasses and blazer, ducking his head. "Uh, sorry, Gwen, I'd love to, but Ned and I are sitting together, so..."
"Oh," Gwen said, "That's fine. We'll catch you during the exhibit, though, right?"
"Of course," the boy said, clearly surprised to hear that someone wanted to see him, "That'll be fun." He nodded up at Harry, then at Diana, quickly moving past Flash and his other friends. Surprisingly, Flash said nothing to him, barely sparing him a glance.
"It's fine, Gwen," Diana said, "You can sit by Harry and I'll find someone else to sit with. Make new friends, you know?"
Gwen gave her a sad, but proud look. "Only if you're sure..." Diana nodded and she smiled. "I'm proud of you, Dina, you're spreading your wings. This is good..." she continued to talk as they walked towards the exit, leaving Flash to talk to his other friends.
Diana tried to pay attention, still wrapping her brain around the nickname. It wasn't a big deal of anything, just an omission of the first A in her name, but it still struck her. Nicknames were for people who were really close friends. It filled her with a nice, warm feeling. The feeling of being cared for.
"Moon! Cindy Moon!"
They all turned to see a boy, probably a junior, running up to Gwen, only to stop a foot or so away. "Uh, you're not Cindy..." then he brightened, handing her a paper, "You're her sister! Yeah, can you give this to Cindy, she said she wanted to try out for hockey, so she needs to see this."
He started to run away, but Gwen grabbed his arm. "Wait. Sorry, I'm not her sister. I'm Gwen Stacy."
"Oh," the boy said, taking the paper back, "You just looked like her, so I figured you're probably related."
Gwen pursed her lips in a tight smile. "Yeah, no, we're not related. Sorry."
"I can give it to her," Diana offered, taking the paper from him, "It's no trouble."
"Thanks," the boy said, already starting to run away. He disappeared back into the school and that was the last they saw of him.
Gwen took a deep breath as Harry started to laugh. "I looked like her so he figured we were probably related. Is he serious?"
Harry laughed, shaking his head. "Don't you just love the casual racism?"
Gwen groaned loudly. "I am so—I cannot believe that just happened to me. I'm not even gonna—I—No. No, I'm just gonna get on that bus and pretend this didn't happen. Let's go."
Diana pursed her lips, shaking her head, following the girl towards the line, looking around for Cindy Moon, holding the paper tightly in her hands, not wanting it to blow away in the wind.
She climbed in the bus, following Gwen and Harry, sitting towards the back. She sat in front of them, turning around in her seat to look at them over the cushion, smiling. They smiled back, Gwen already laughing at the situation that had occurred a mere few minutes before.
Diana turned back around to look at the students climbing inside, trying to find Cindy. She caught sight of the small girl climbing in, talking to Hector Cervantez, another freshman.
Diana called out her name, waving, holding up the paper as an explanation. She tried to ignore some of the looks she received from the others in the bus, opting to just sit back down, blushing.
The girl appeared at her side a few moments later, sitting down. "Hey, Diana, what's up?"
Wordlessly, Diana handed over the paper, not wanting to speak and end up regaling the mix-up from earlier. Cindy scanned it over quickly, instantly brightening.
"Awesome! Yeah, I'm trying out for the hockey team. Thank you so much for bringing this to me, it's really important. It's got all the practice times and equipment so I can get prepared in case I get in." She settled in her seat, folding the paper and placing it in her bag.
"Cool," Diana commented, "Do you like playing hockey?"
Cindy nodded excitedly. "Yeah! Back in the eighth grade, Hector and I both saw this little ad thing at our school for kids who wanted to join next year, the school would help you out, get you ready. It was so much fun, they say I'm really good, but I dunno. It's fun, though, I love it. You're not really the sporty type, though, right?"
Diana shook her head. "No. Not really the smart type either, I don't even know where we're headed to."
Cindy smiled, laughing softly. "Well, we weren't all born with knowledge, we learned it. We're heading over to the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows. Um, that's in Queens, if you didn't know." Diana did not and said as much.
Cindy smiled again, "Now you know. We're going to the look around the place for the first half of the day, then watch the demonstration of safe handling of nuclear laboratory waste materials. It's sponsored by General Techtronics Laboratories East and it's a big deal for a lot of people."
Diana nodded as she finished, staring at the smaller girl with wide eyes. There had been some talk that Cindy had an eidetic memory and, considering how she excelled in class as well as their conversation, Diana was inclined to believe the rumors.
"This should be fun," Diana said, looking out the window to watch the city move past, staring up at the skyscrapers with the sort of childlike awe that she always had when in the city.
"Yeah," Cindy agreed, also looking out the window, "I have a feeling this will be life changing."
AUTHOR'S NOTE
REWRITTEN: MAY 30, 2017/REPUBLISHED: JUNE 5, 2017
Ah, I know this is really short and I wanted to just put the whole field trip into one chapter, but it got too long, so I cut it into two parts. I'm really disappointed in myself, I wanted to get it all into one chapter that wasn't too long.
Oh well, the next chapter has the really cute stuff, so, I'm glad I can just add more of it now.
That situation that happened to Gwen with the Cindy Moon mix-up happened to me, including the casual racism quip, which was why I included it.
Some (or maybe none of you) might be wondering who that girl in the gif is of. That is of Tiffany Espensen who is playing a character known as, from the IMDB page, Cindy. As in, I'm pretty sure Cindy Moon. Can you hear me screaming, I can hear me screaming (I also high-key want Marvel to make a Silk or Spider-Gwen movie so I can try to audition to play either Cindy or Gwen because I want.)
If I did my research on the IMDB page and in canon correctly, they have switched Peter's favorite science teacher from Mr. Warren to MS. Warren, who is played by a woman of color, we saw her in the trailer, I think. I approve. I mentioned her because I saw in the trailer that Flash and Peter were in the same class for science, so I just put it at the beginning of the day.
Sally Avril was part of Flash's group, along with Jason Ionello, Seymour O'Reilly, and Brian "Tiny" McKeever. She later became a hero of sorts, but she was also pretty mean, dissuading Liz Allan from comforting Peter after the death of Uncle Ben
