chapter 17

'why are you suffocating me?'

.

.

.

"You're welcome to visit anytime," Rebekah told the hybrid the next day as she stood at the doors to the Mikaelson property that she had stayed the night in. It had been a little weird to notice the large 'M' signs that hung around the building, especially since she know had been informed that she was a Mikaelson.

They had spent most of the previous afternoon and evening talking about stories that Marcel, Rebekah and Kol had of her mother. Even if Astrid hadn't been Ester's child, she had certainly been accepted into the family as if she was, and the stories that they all told her just alluded even more to that. She still was confused as to why the family seemingly held so much animosity towards her late father but not the rest of the Mystic Falls crew - something that she was too scared to ask about.

"Thanks," Georgie replied to the blonde with a smile as she placed her rucksack into the trunk of the car that Alaric had sent to have her picked up in. They'd apparently had some more Malivore monster drama about a monster who was able to hijack their dreams but thankfully Hope had managed to kill the monster. Georgie was honestly just happy that she had done a lot of her studying for their exams in the past few weeks as she swore she'd never pass them at this rate.

Just as she went to sit in the jeep, she turned to look at Rebekah once more, her eyebrows pinched together as she tried to figure out the words that had been stuck in her throat since meeting them all the day before. She knew something was off with how they were so open with her, especially since she was aware that when the Mikaelsons first discovered Freya was alive that they didn't even welcome her with open arms - so she just didn't understand why they were so quick to accept her.

"Is there something you guys aren't telling me?" Georgie asked, noticing how Rebekah raised her eyebrows in a little surprise but also with a small smile forming on her lips.

"No, you're just a lot more like your mother than we expected," Rebekah admitted before feeling a slight guilt settle into her chest as she watched the girl hop into the car. Knocking on the window, she smiled as Georgie rolled it down in confusion. "You're a Mikaelson now Georgie. This family, we stick together no matter what."

"Yeah, always and forever right?" Georgie asked, having heard Hope mention the phrase numerous times since they had started rooming together. "Hope told me all about it."

"Yeah," Rebekah smiled, her eyes showing a hint of relief behind them as she took a step away from the window and watched as the car started up. "Just remember that, and everything will work out fine."

Georgie waved goodbye as the car left the New Orleans roads, her eyebrows still a little furrowed as she replayed Rebekah's words over in her head. She knew that the Originals were old and had funny ways of sometimes saying things but she couldn't shake the fact that something about her entire trip had seemed off. The Mikaelsons just seemed off with her, and she knew that it would likely not be long until she figured out why in some shape or another.

Her thoughts were interrupted with a buzzing of her phone, seeing Josie's name flash up on the screen. She smiled widely for a second before her smile instantly dropped, remembering that she was yet to actually tell Josie about the drama that had unfolded since her and Lizzie took off to Europe.

Where are you?

Mom said you've been out of Virginia since yesterday morning - why didn't you tell me or Lizzie?

Georgie groaned, smacking her head against the window as she realised that she was going to have to explain a lot to not just Josie but also the blonde siphoner too.

This day could't get any stranger.

______

It was the afternoon of the next day when Georgie was finally reunited with the Saltzman twins. She had simply replied to Josie's text with a one liner informing her that it was easier to explain in person - and while she hadn't expected a huge reply from Josie, she had at least thought the girl would send something. Instead, Georgie was receiving the cold shoulder for the time being.

Alaric had been explaining to Georgie and Hope that the urn had glowed, meaning that another monster was most likely out to get to it once again. While Hope had a lot of questions about the potential monsters that might come for it next, Georgie was just dreading having to fight once more. She was growing tired of all these monsters and to be fully honest, she wasn't entirely sure why Landon seemed to be in the centre of everything.

"All we can do is make sure we're not blindsided by another monster waltzing through our doors," Alaric told them both, before the doors to the office swung open almost as if on cue. Georgie smiled at Josie and Lizzie, noticing how Josie's smile didn't falter as she smiled back - something that the hybrid found incredibly reassuring.

"Too late," Hope murmured, receiving a jab in the side from Georgie.

"Uh, girls. What are you doing here? You're not supposed to get in until tonight," Alaric asked, confused at the twins standing looking at him unimpressed. Josie was fixing the little hat on her head while Lizzie literally looked like she was about to commit a massacre.

"Mom was able to get us direct into Dulles. Then faxed, texted and e-mailed you - our revised itinerary."

"I am so sorry. It's-it's chaos around here," Alaric continued, knowing that Lizzie was not in the slightest impressed.

"It's okay, Dad. We know that you're overwhelmed," Josie replied with a small smile, but it was clear that even the forgiving twin didn't actually believe what she was saying. Time and time again their dad had let them down and it didn't help that Hope was sitting in the office - usually where the root of their disappointments started. "But Europe was amazing. And seeing Mom was really good."

"Jo's covered the bright side. Far less sunny was waiting for you in the chilly dark of morning at the terminal and you not showing up."

Hope shrugged a little, looking at Georgie who was also rather uncomfortable with the tension that had been created between everyone. "In his defense, um, we've been in crisis mode around here."

"Oh, we've heard all about it. Hope got bamboozled by one of the monsters and now only two keys separate the entire supernatural community from being consumed by a hell portal. I'm guessing that weird little vase is one of them?" Lizzie summed up, her eyes narrowed as she studied the three in the office.

"It's an urn, actually," Georgie replied, before shutting up after noticing the death stare that Lizzie was now sending in her direction.

"I don't care what it is. I care that instead of being welcomed at the airport, we were forced to take a three-hour shuttle ride that smelled like an open sewer. And feet. Thanks a lot, Hope. Way to ruin life for the rest of us."

There was an uncomfortable silence between the remaining group as Lizzie stormed off, leaving her suitcase and bags on the ground beside Josie. Hope was still standing with her arms crossed as she looked in the direction that Lizzie had stormed off in and Georgie knew this was the perfect time to get back into Josie's good books.

"Josie, I'll help you get these to your guys' room," Georgie said with a soft smile, the dark haired Saltzman smiling back gently. Alaric and Hope shared a look as the two girls seemed utterly infatuated with each other as they left the office, knowing that the relationship forming between them was something that was either gonna be epic or end in disaster.

____

"I don't know Josie," Georgie explained as they headed towards the room, having briefly summed up why she had been in New Orleans. "It was nice meeting them but something was just weird... like I thought it was because it's not every day that you find out your sister had a secret love child with a man who your family hates, but it was like they already knew who I was."

"Didn't Hope tell them about you before you even found out you were related? Maybe they're just good at picturing people after being on the planet for over a thousand years," Josie mused, not trying to shut Georgie down but thinking that she was maybe just overthinking things. She knew the girl had a past of getting paranoid rather easily and she didn't want her to start panicking over something that looked like it was going to be good for her.

"I know. I think it doesn't help that everyone is looking at me differently now - as if I've changed."

They both paused as they reached the twins room, knowing that the wrath of Lizzie was sometimes a brutal force to face as they had just witnessed downstairs. Josie turned to look at Georgie, silently asking if she was wanting to come in and potentially get yelled at but the hybrid was already reaching for the door handle.

Lizzie was her friend, and even if she was annoyed at Hope she knew that the blonde twin had a soft spot for the hybrid. Besides, if there was a monster potentially on the loose then Georgie didn't want Lizzie to feel alone.

"Lizzie? Lizzie. Lizzie? Please don't be mad at Dad," Josie said to her twin as they entered the room, Georgie pushing in Lizzie's bags as Josie approached Lizzie. The blonde spun around ridiculously quickly, giving both of the dark haired girls a fright as she rushed towards them and pulled them into a hug.

Unknown to all three of them, Lizzie had just encouraged and managed to vanquish their newest monster. Not only had she wished for Hope Mikaelson to have never been born, she had experienced a world in which this was the truth. While Klaus and Caroline had gone on murderous rages and caused a war between the humans and the supernatural, she had also witnessed that Georgie had joined them - a full hybrid with turned off emotions after the death of her family.

Thankfully, it had not become the reality that they knew as their truth.

"Oh. What's happening? Why are you suffocating me?" Josie asked in confusion as Lizzie squeezed her tightly, wrapping her arms tightly around her sister.

"I have no idea," Lizzie admitted before looking at where the hybrid was standing at the doorframe with her luggage awkwardly. "Oh fine, Lockwolf, get in here!"

All three laughed as Georgie joined their hug, suddenly feeling a lot more optimistic than they all had been that morning. Georgie smiled into the embrace, knowing that she had found two families recently: the Mikaelsons and her Salvatore School family.

_____

When Hope had told Georgie that they were placing a barrier spell around the urn to trap the next monster, she hadn't expected their plan to actually work for once. But there they both were, standing in their pyjamas as they stared at something she really couldn't believe she was seeing.

"You're not seriously suggesting we kill a unicorn?" Hope asked Dorian, trying to get the man to lower the crossbow in his arms. Georgie nodded in agreement, her hand resting on Dorian's forearm as she tried to convince him to leave the creature be.

"I'm suggesting we don't give it a pass because it's cute!" Dorian exclaimed, Alaric nodding in agreement. They were both much less naive that the two young supernatural girls that stood in front of them but even they could tell that it was going to be hard to view the unicorn as anything but a cuddly animal.

"Can't we just... leave it alone?" Hope asked, looking for Georgie to back her up.

"Yeah, like it's trapped, it's not going anywhere. It's harmless," Georgie supplied, both of the girls nodding furiously in agreement with each other as they continued to stand between the adult men and the unicorn. She had been obsessed with unicorns when she was young and she had no intention of murdering one.

"Hope's right," Alaric agreed, sighing a little as he turned to look at Dorian. "As long as we keep it alive, other creatures won't be coming for the urn. So we just stay alert and let it be."

Dorian sighed dramatically for a moment before eventually agreeing, dropping his hands to his side in surrender as he rubbed at his eyes. Looking at where the two girls were smiling at each other in triumph.

"All right, well, I'll be on alert back in bed," Dorian replied, turning on his heel as the others followed after him. If they'd been paying more attention, they might have noticed the slug that was crawling up the heel of Hope before it was too late to stop the impending chaos.
___

"Good morning, Rafael," Lizzie spoke as she and Josie walked over to where Hope, Raf, Georgie and Landon were sitting. Georgie looked up slowly, exhaustion written all over her face from where she was sitting on the arm rest of the couch beside Raf. Josie was surprised to see her looking so tired, but she would realise in a moment why.

"Hi," Raf replied awkwardly back to Lizzie, feeling a little uncomfortable. "Uh, how was your-your trip?"

"Excellent. Thank you," Josie replied back for Lizzie as the blonde paused for a moment, their arms linked together protectively in some show of sibling bond Georgie assumed. The darker haired Saltzman turned to Landon with a soft smile, knowing it was her turn to make things a little less awkward. "And welcome back, Landon."

"Didn't you vote me out?"

"That's all in the past!" Lizzie told them all, although even Georgie could admit that it felt more like an order than a fact. She smiled a little at that before Lizzie continued speaking to them all. "Now, is everyone as excited as I am about tonight?"

"What's happening tonight?" Landon and Georgie asked at the same time, having missed some announcement or something because they certainly had no idea that anything was supposed to be happening. Landon had obviously been on the road for a while and Georgie hadn't really been kept up to date with school events during her three day trip to New Orleans.

Hope laughed, Georgie and Raf sharing surprised looks at her attitude as she turned to gaze at Landon longingly. Even Josie and Lizzie looked at little confused at her shift in attitude, especially since Hope always refused to have any involvement in the school's annual talent show.

"The school's annual talent show. All the factions compete. You know, the witch performance wouldn't be the same - without you two," Hope told them all, turning to give a compliment to both of the siphoners. They smiled at this, but Georgie could literally almost sense their confusion at Hope being overly kind to them.

"Thank you," Josie said as she moved to stand beside Georgie who was smiling at her and Lizzie still. "Hey, you look tired? You alright?"

"Yeah," Georgie lowered her voice, making sure that the others were still talking about the talent show before she turned back to Josie. "Hope and I went a wolf run this morning which was weird in itself since she usually prefers to go alone but she just wouldn't stop wanting to race each other so I'm a bit worn out but nothing a good iced coffee won't fix."

Just before Josie could go to reply, the little chimes that signalled the intercom echoed through the hall as Alaric started to speak into the microphone.

"If I could have your attention. Last night we were able to capture a monster here on the grounds. We have everything under control. But given this potential danger, it is with a heavy heart that I must postpone the talent show. Hopefully, we'll be able to reschedule this... unique event... at a later date. A much, much later date," his voice said, causing all of the students to groan in disbelief. They'd been looking forward to the talent show since they'd been through so much recently and now that it was cancelled they were due giving up.

"Kind of overkill if you ask me," Hope replied, a little smirk on her face as she looked over to the twins. "We told your dad that a unicorn barely counts as a monster."

"Oh," Georgie replied as she looked at the shocked look on Josie's face. "Yeah, I was also on monster patrol last night too so didn't get much sleep."

Lizzie grabbed on to Josie's hand after that, tugging her sister away as they headed to go confront their father about keeping something else from them. Georgie smiled as she watched them go, forever jealous of the bond that the siblings had with each other.

As the Saltzman twins headed off, the quartet that was left behind began their journey to classes. Georgie didn't have any morning classes but she had made plans to head to the kitchen and cook up some food before heading to the library to get some studying done for the classes she missed while in New Orleans. Just before Georgie could say anything, the chime was heard again but this time it was Lizzie Saltzman's voice that rang through the speakers.

"Good news, friends. The talent show is going on as previously scheduled."

"So, Lizzie's acting weird," Landon said to Raf and Georgie, knowing that it was mostly because of him and Lizzie's previous... entanglement.

"She's not the only one."

"Babe!" Hope exclaimed, holding up a flyer as she turned to look at Landon. "We should do a talent. "

"That's my queue to leave," Georgie muttered to Raf, her eyes wide as she looked at how out of character Hope was acting that morning. Just before she could turn and walk away, Hope grabbed on to Georgie and pulled her in for a hug. "Thanks Hope, I think?"

Hope let go of her with a smile, turning on her heel and tugging Landon and Raf down the corridor as they left Georgie standing outside the kitchen. The girl furrowed her eyebrows for a moment, blinking in confusion as she headed into the kitchen.

Her hand shot up to her ear, having felt a tingle of something for a brief second but shrugged it off as she headed over to the iced coffee machine that Lizzie had convinced Alaric to buy the previous month. And as Georgie made her iced coffee, the slug that had been passed from Hope to her roommate during their hug made its way further into her ear.

____

"Mr Williams!" Hope and Landon exclaimed later on as they rushed outside to the unicorn, noticing their teacher with their back to them and facing the monster. Landon and Hope had just had the disgusting experience of witnessing an electric shock cause some sort of slug to come flying out of Hope's mouth and on to their chopping board. Her unusual attitude was suddenly gone, replaced solely by her usual persona and a need to make sure that they got rid of whatever parasite had infected her. "Dr. Saltzman's been MIA, and this creepy slug came out of my ear."

"Did it look like this?"

The man turned around with a glass jar in his hand, containing a crushed up slug that looked identical to the one that Hope and Landon had just stabbed.

"Yep, exactly like that."

"This one tried getting into me. I was hoping it was the only one," Dorian explained, turning to look more at Hope as he spoke. He knew Landon was aware of what was going on but since the boy didn't have any supernatural abilities as far as they were aware, he knew Hope would be the bigger help here. "I think our harmless friend the unicorn brought it onto school grounds to infect all of us."

Before any of them could say anything else, the unicorn began to neigh frantically before dramatically peeling to the side. They all stared at it for a moment before realising that it had literally just dropped dead in front of them.

"See? Harmless," Hope joked, the trio staring at the dead animal on the ground.

They all turned to the side as the sound of leaves crunching next to them brought their attention to their newest member of the group - the black wolf that Hope knew instantly as her roommate. Landon and Dorian also came to the same conclusion, knowing to turn around while Hope used her magic to bring some clothes to throw across to Georgie who likely hadn't thought to bring her own.

"You can turn around now," Georgie told Landon and Dorian as she finished pulling the old sweater on, noticing that Hope's spell had brought some of her comfy clothes instead of her uniform which she was glad for. "I, for one, am sure glad that thing is dead. I don't know about you guys but I just hacked up an entire slug back there."

"Wait, you had one in you too? But you seemed completely normal earlier on?" Landon said, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Georgie shrugged, not knowing what to say to the boy but she knew that they would believe her regardless of whether or not she could explain it.

"I think we need to get back to the school ASAP," Dorian interrupted, just glad that he didn't have to deal with an infected tribrid or an infected hybrid. The three teenagers nodded as they followed after Dorian, with only Georgie pausing for the smallest of minutes to cast a look back at the unicorn. She smirked for a second, her eyes glowing the same bright green that Hope's had done earlier before spinning on her heel and following the trio who she hoped would lead her straight to that urn.

____

Georgie was on the hunt for Josie before she went on the hunt for the urn. She knew that the girl was more likely to know where it was than she was, with her being not only Alaric's daughter but probably the smartest out of them all. Besides, she had a pretty good feeling that Josie had also been inserted with the parasite too.

"It is not a show-stopping finale cane number without canes, so find them. And get dressed. Please," Lizzie snapped at her twin as Georgie rounded the side of the curtain, a smile on her face as she noticed Josie was the only witch not in the typical costume.

"Avoiding Penelope going well?" Georgie asked as she cast a side glance at the witch who was applying makeup while watching both herself and Josie interact. Penelope Park had stayed mostly away from Georgie for the past few weeks, but she seemed to have been trying to speak to Josie at every opportunity recently.

"Not really," Josie hummed as she moved forward and placed a hand on Georgie's forearm with a small suggestive smile. "Do you want to get out of here?"

Georgie would never say no to that.

_____

"I got this," Josie said as they reached an invisible magic barrier in the woods, her hand latching on to a branch beside them as she siphoned the power of the barrier away. Georgie smiled in amusement at her as both of their eyes grew luminous green, stepping over the barrier after Josie.

As they reached the steps of the old mill, Josie turned around and looked at Georgie with soft eyes as she smiled warmly. The girl smiled back, feeling nothing but pure bliss and peace in that moment for the first time in a while.

"What did you want to ask me?" Georgie asked, knowing that Josie had mentioned previously that she wanted to talk to her. "Back before you found out about the unicorn?"

Josie moved forward, placing a palm against her cheek before pulling the hybrid in for a kiss - a short, yet passionate one. Georgie allowed her arms to slide around Josie's body, one resting on her back and the other on her hips. She smiled into the kiss, before pulling back and grinning as Josie blushed a little.

"I wanted to know if you wanted to make things official?" Josie asked, so softly that had it not been for Georgie's hybrid hearing that she might had missed it. "Between us."

Georgie nodded, blushing a little as she pulled Josie in for another quick kiss. They both giggled as they pulled apart, almost as if a switch had been flicked between them and they remembered what they had came here to do.

"There," Georgie murmured as her eyes latched on to the urn over Josie's shoulder. "That's the urn."

"Let's go. You drive," Josie replied as they started walking quickly towards it, Georgie pausing for the slightest moment before following after her. Georgie didn't know how to properly drive but if she needed to figure it out to be able to return the urn to Malivore then she was sure she could.

"Not so fast, Thelma and Louise," Hope's voice called out from behind them, the hybrid's eyes glowing green as she spun around to face her tribrid roommate with a snarl on her lips. Josie also spun around to face Hope, her hand reaching out to siphon from Georgie. Just before her hand could touch Georgie, Hope yelled out an incantation and sent the hybrid flying backwards into the wall - where the canes that Lizzie had been so desperate to find then came tumbling down on her as she groaned.

"Found the canes."

"You shouldn't have done that," Josie snarled at Hope, casting a quick look at where Georgie was grumbling as she tried to sit back up. Her hands twisted and turned as she started to form a ball of energy in her palms, ready to attack Hope before Lizzie came up behind her and grabbed on to her wrist to stop her.

While Lizzie and Josie had a sisterly fighting moment, Hope started to head over to where Georgie had pushed herself up to her feet with her eyes glowing between green and yellow in anger. She knew fine well that if she lost control and started to attack as a wolf that while Hope could probably hold her own, Josie and Lizzie could face serious harm.

"You lied to me about the slug," Hope said, her hands ready at her side to use her magic against her cousin if she needed to. "I thought you were better than that Georgie."

Georgie obviously didn't know that Hope was just stalling her until Lizzie could take the bracelet off Josie and pass it over to use on Georgie, but she took the bait regardless and sneered at Hope with fury written across her face.

"I am a Mikaelson after all, I'm sure you'd know lying comes with that," Georgie snarled, Hope's eyebrows raising in surprise at how she was throwing the name around suddenly. She wasn't sure what had made Georgie so on edge since coming back from New Orleans but it seemed like the girl was harbouring some deep paranoia about something.

Hope grabbed the bracelet from Lizzie, moving forward and wrapping it around Georgie's wrist before she could say anything else. The girl looked down at the bracelet with narrow eyes before looking back up at Hope with a scoff.

"You really think a pathetic bracelet from Lizzie is going to solve anything?"

As soon as the words left her mouth, Georgie let out a yelp and shout as she felt a sudden burning of electric currents running through her arm. She dropped to her knees as she spat up not just one slug, but rather four on the ground and heaved a little. Hope, Lizzie and Josie all shared surprised looks at seeing more than one slug come from the girl, while Hope dropped down beside her as she coughed.

Lizzie stamped on the slugs as Georgie looked up with nothing but guilt as she thought about what she had just said to Hope and what she was about to do to her friends. She sighed as she leaned against Hope, not sure what to even say.

"That's the last time I trust a unicorn."
