One of my foster families told me there are a few people in this world who see things differently.
The rebels, the ones who stand out in the word and yet seek to blend into the background at the same time.
They look up at the stars and see every second of their existence, even more, they really believe one day they'll get there.
It's a wonder no one finds us out.
Hears the music as we brush shoulders on the subway or look up from our phones to watch the world pass by.
I guess it's because they don't ask.
Why learn from someone you think you know everything about?
Sure they make friends, sometimes, but they can't reveal who they are.
Can't tell the amazing things they see.
Their lives aren't real to them, they live somewhere else, a place time can never touch.
I had never been a part of that world before.
Not before Daleun.
Sure, I mean I had always been a part of its existence. Always watching it change and turn in the minds of the silence around me. But as the lights of the airport grew closer and my music blared I finally felt like I was a part of something, that the world made sense.
Daleun abruptly sat up scaring me out of my trance of fascination with my shoes.
"Dang it." He murmured.
"What now?" I sighed sitting up and looking around. Nightfall had come and I assumed we'd been driving for quite a while. It was colder out, and the landscape was barely recognizable.
"You don't have your passport."
I scoffed, not only were we going to the airport but we were fleeing the country?! What did this kid do?!
But against my better judgment, I felt myself trusting him more and more.
He knew what he was doing, I knew there had to be a reason for this.
With a sly grin, I reached into my backpack. With so many foster homes and never knowing where I was headed next, I was constantly prepared. I pulled out a waterproof bag filled with all my personal belongings.
For a moment Daleuns walls went down and I saw a flash of surprise on his face. It quickly dissipated however and his ices eyes returned right back. He gave a small nod of approval and pulled out his travel papers as well.
"Last stop for two runaways, first stop for a rich man." The boy laughed parking the car and turning around. "A tip wouldn't go amiss."
Daleun rolled his eyes and tossed the man another stack of fifties, "This pays for your silence." He said firmly.
The man gave a greedy nod and opened the door for me. My knees trembled, this was insane, what the heck was I doing!
At this point, It all felt like a dream, I wasn't in control of any of my choices, I was being blindly led through chapter after chapter of a life that wasn't my own.
Too fast.
This was moving too fast.
"Come," Daleun harshly quipped, nudging me forward.
"Jerk," I muttered and stormed in the direction of the doors.
He followed close behind me. I suddenly felt this need to see this through, to prove I was every bit as strong as he was. To prove to the world I wasn't just Ameris, nobody knows her last name. To prove I had the guts to do something at the moment, to be heard.
"Last chance to get lost," Daleun chided.
"Let's get out of here," I mumbled grabbing my backpack and stomping my way through the doors.
I wish I had never gotten on that plane.
I handed the lady at the check-in counter my bag full of information and my backpack.
She looked at my pitiful belongings and raised an eyebrow, "This is all?" She questioned.
I put up a finger and removed a stick of gum from my pocket, setting it down on the small counter beside her. "There, now that's all."
I thought I heard the next salesman over snicker but I couldn't be sure.
"Do you have someone to travel with you?" The women said with concern, "You're too young to go alone."
Before I could answer I felt someone push past me.
"She's with me." A gruff voice said and I realized that Daleun had been behind me the entire time.
"Sir," Said the lady, "Do you have proof of Guardianship or parental consent.
Daleun leaned forward and his cologne filled my lungs, nearly suffocating me.
His eyes narrowed and intensified at the small women behind the baggage counter.
"I said she's with me."
The lady gave a nod and gulped.
Daleun grabbed my arm and dragged me along to the baggage check.
It wasn't until we got to the metal detector that I realized Daleun had added another case to our bags.
An instrument case.
"Where'd you get that?!" I exclaimed in a hushed whisper.
Daleun blew me off and carried on.
The case was carefully inspected, and I watched wide-eyed and eager they opened it.
I don't know why but I held my breath as if some miracle was about to be revealed to the world.
What if he was smuggling something? What had I gotten myself into?!
I nearly jumped back when the case came flying open and the pearl inside the clam was revealed. A mesmerizing tiger striped violin, aged and loved by time itself.
Just a violin.
"Make a note," Said the man in uniform, "Full sized violin, under the weight limit, passed inspection."
I thought I heard Daleun sigh in relief but when I turned his face has returned to its normal content grimace so I shook off the relief as nothing.
After all, what did he have to be relieved about?
"Where'd you get that thing?" I asked him as we walked towards the gate, "You didn't have it on the car ride."
But the silence was my only response from the brooding figure walking briskly forward.
