Shame
Alex's POV:
As unbelievably happy as I am to be marrying Thomas, I hate this. I feel ridiculous in this suit, the fabric is constricting, my collar is itchy, and I'm pretty sure I'm having an allergic reaction to the stares. I keep my arm tightly on Thomas', focusing my gaze strictly on John, who's smiling encouragingly.
People stand as we make our way to the alter. There's lots of clapping and cheering. The Schuylers blow kisses. Pegs looks like she's going to explode from excitement. Her girlfriend Maria is here too, trying to keep Peggy in check. It's a loosing battle, really.
Herc whistles when the reach the alter, earning a shove from John and a high-five from Laf. Thomas and I both flash him an "eyes off what's mine" look. The officiant starts his speeches, as I struggle to keep my focus on Thomas and how handsome he looks. Our hands are clasped between us and I'm squeezing so tightly his fingers are turning purple. I try to loosen my grip so I don't hurt him.
It's time to exchange vows. I'm going first. I wrote this whole thing ages ago and I've been perfecting and memorizing it ever since. "Before I begin," I start, looking at the crowd, "I would like to clarify that even if this comes across as a mixed message, I love him very much and our abnormal forms of affection do not affect that."
There are some 'aww's in the crowd and Thomas drops his jaw, giving me a 'you're not serious' look. I smirk at him, to which he responds with a shake of his head. "Thomas, you're quite possibly the most annoying, unbearable, obnoxious person I know. You drive me absolutely crazy on a daily basis and at least 2 thirds of the time I'd really like to punch you again.
"However, knowing that punching you was what brought us together in the first place, that might not be such a bad thing. If I'd known then that that punch would land me with a soulmate I despised and the rest of my life stuck with you... I wouldn't have done it. Now though, I'm damn glad I did. As awful as you are, the only thing I can actually say you're good at is being there for me.
Thanks to you, I have a semi-normal sleep schedule, I eat 3 meals a day, and when I'm upset I always have somebody that will hold me and tell me I'll be ok. As somebody who came to America with nothing as nobody... I can't explain verbally how much that means to me. I did write it down, but I can't bring myself to actually articulate those thoughts. Now, if your speech is half as amazing as mine~" I pause, laughing a little, "~maybe I'll let you read it later. Only because you're the only person I trust with those thoughts."
I hear some giggles and 'aw's in the crowd as Thomas clears his throat. "Well," he coughs, glancing at the wedding guests. "I wasn't informed that we were doing the 'loving hatred' speeches, so I had this whole mushy thing prepared... but I'm going to improvise a little." The crowd laughs and I feel my face flushing. He's going to play this up real good. "When I met you, you were Hamilton, the obnoxious employee I didn't like very much. Then you are my soulmate, and I was frustrated and confused."
His words are coming out choppier than usual, so I can tell he's nervous. I squeeze his hands reassuringly and he continues. "From there, you became Alexander, my begrudging soulmate that actually wasn't so bad after all. A bit of a mess at times, but rather endearing. Then... you became mine. My boyfriend. I was happier than you could have ever guessed. And then you became Alex. The love of my life. Then I asked you to marry me. And you became my fiancé. And now... you're going to be my husband. And believe me when I say, this day, this moment, puts all the others to shame."
I want to leap into his arms and kiss him right then and there, but the initiator starts talking again and I settle for staring into his beautiful eyes as we finish the ceremony. I'm smiling impossibly widely until I finally hear the words: "You may kiss the... grooms." I jump at the opportunity as Thomas pulls me into his arms, dipping me dramatically and kissing me with so much passion I can hear Eliza giggling and telling Marie to cover her eyes.
