Taking Action
"I see. If I use the dust in this way, then you will have a clear viewpoint to shoot."
The team was working out some new combinations the very next day, as Lyra had become determined to work off their loss. Right now, Janelle was figuring out Lyra's strategy while Nico and Tanya worked on their own combination. Lyra nodded to Janelle's confirmation, a smile on Lyra's face.
"Precisely," Lyra pointed to the green dust, proud of her own strategy. She patted her golden axe-turned-sniper rifle, satisfied. "It will give me an opening. So why don't we try it out?"
"If you insist," Janelle agreed, nocking an arrow backward. She shot forward, and a silvery arrow sliced through the air, hitting the training dummy. The dummy flew into the air as a tornado rose from the ground, and Lyra jumped upward, flipping multiple times before swinging her axe down onto the dummy. The blade split the dummy in two, and Lyra landed on the ground with a satisfied smirk.
"See? I told you," Lyra flipped her platinum blonde hair over her shoulder in smug excitement. "Well, I'm glad that worked out. I wonder how the other two are doing...."
"ALRIGHT! So for this combo, you have to climb up to my shoulders!"
Tanya made a wild declaration, swinging her arm grandiosely. Nico furrowed her brow in confusion upon hearing Tanya's plan.
"Wha...what..?" She asked, crossing her arms. Out of all the things Nico had expected her to do, that was not one of them. Then again, she should have expected it. After all, she was talking to Tanya. "Uh... D-Didn't Lyra w-want us to do something else?"
"Well, yeah, but I think my idea is better!" Tanya grinned confidently. "Ready, ready? Let's try!"
Tanya bent down, gesturing for Nico to get onto her back. Hesitantly, Nico debated whether or not she should do as Tanya said.
"C'mon, just try," Tanya encouraged, a bright smile on her face. She knew Nico was a little shy, so she hoped that her coaxing would be able to help the girl a little bit more. "It's training!"
"I-I guess..."
They hadn't done any combos before, so Nico just assumed that this was what people normally did as a fighting style. She finally nodded, and climbed onto Tanya's back. Before she could continue climbing onto her shoulders, Tanya began to run around while Nico was still piggybacking off of her, making the Grimm girl yelp as she held on for dear life.
"Sorry! I'll let you climb up," Tanya apologized, and she stopped moving. Slowly, Nico made her way onto Tanya's shoulders so that she was sitting on her, Tanya holding her legs to make sure she didn't fall.
"Alright, we're off!!" Tanya screamed, running as fast as she could. Nico held on tightly, shocked. A training dummy was ahead of them, and Tanya kept running towards it. Without even thinking about it, Nico unsheathed her sword and sliced multiple times as they ran past. Since she was higher up, her sword actually reached the higher parts of the dummy, and she tore open the training dummy with a couple of swift cuts.
Tanya ran past another row of training dummies, and Nico slashed her sword once again, cutting off the training dummy's' heads easily. As Tanya slowed to a stop, she turned and the duo gazed at the carnage of slashed and beheaded training dummies they'd created. Nico stared in shock, clearly surprised such a haphazard plan had worked, as Tanya cheered in excitement.
"T-That... worked?" Nico questioned, pleased that their 'strategy' had worked. Her tail wagged slightly at the thought of succeeding in something for her team.
"Yes! We did great! I can't believe that actually worked!" Tanya grinned widely, bending down so that Nico could get down. She hesitantly got off, confused.
"S-so...that's o-our combo..?" Nico questioned, her ears perking upward.
"Yeah! I guess we need a name for it, huh?" Tanya tapped her chin, going into deep thought.
"A name?" Nico asked, tilting her head.
"Something that one of us will call out so we know when to do our combo! It's gotta be cool... and fit us perfectly... OH! I got it!" Tanya exclaimed loudly. "We'll call it Blueberry!"
"...What," Nico stared at Tanya blankly. How did the name "Blueberry" fit them perfectly? Was there something about blueberries that she didn't know about that made them really cool?
"Yeah, you know...blueberries are blue on the outside, right? But they're green on the inside... I think. ...And blueberries are really small, like you!" Tanya explained excitedly as she pat Nico on the head.
"I... what," Nico was slightly offended that Tanya had called her small. Although she couldn't exactly argue the fact she was nearly an entire foot shorter than her teammate. "I-I'm not that s-small..."
"Hm... I'll just call you fun-sized then! So whenever I call out Blueberry, we run in and do that!" Tanya cheered, leaving up her hand for a high five. "But...Lyra won't ever say it, since she doesn't know about this. Just listen for me, okay?"
"Uh... Alright..." Nico slowly returned Tanya's high five.
"So, has everything been working well for you two?" Lyra questioned as her and Janelle came over to check on the latter two members of Team LJNT. Tanya grinned.
"You bet it is!" Tanya exclaimed as she pumped her fist into the air. "Ours is probably better than yours!"
"Oh, please. I guarantee that our combo is way better than yours and the G...Nico's," Lyra managed to backtrack before she completely flubbed up her redemption towards Nico. No, that was right. Kill it! Kill the Grimm! Lyra closed her eyes, irritated with the voice in her head. "Er...Sorry."
"I-I-It's...okay," Nico shrugged, her tail wagging slightly. She was just glad to hear someone even acknowledge the fact that it was wrong to call her Grimm.
"Ah, Team LJNT. What a delightful surprise to see you all out here in the training grounds..."
Professor Ozpin emerged from seemingly nowhere with a cup of coffee in his hands and a bemused smile on his face. Janelle immediately clasped her hands behind her back and bowed slightly.
"You don't sound very surprised, Professor," Lyra noted, swinging her axe onto her shoulder effortlessly. "...Wait a minute, is that what you were trying to do-"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Ozpin smiled wider before taking a sip from his cup. "You guys did take action faster than I had anticipated...Oh, and it seems as if you are all getting along."
"Yeah!" Tanya was quick to jump in to the conversation with her energetic voice. "I mean, it was bound to happen! We're a good team, and I know we're going to do great things!"
"Only if we keep up this good work," Lyra reminded them. "We already got beat by another team. I'm not letting that happen again."
"Ah, yes..." Ozpin seemed to smirk a little bit, but Lyra wrote it off as just a figment of her imagination. "Well, you all did put up a decent fight."
"There's no such thing as a decent fight if you don't win!" Lyra responded passionately, a fierce look in her golden eyes. "But mark my words, we're going to put up a fight for whatever you have to throw at us next!"
"...I'm interested to see how well you can back that claim up," Ozpin said curiously. "...Miss Torres, you look as if you have something to say."
"Well, yes..." Janelle nodded, grateful to speak now that she had actually been addressed. She knew that she didn't have to do that, but she was so used to it at her old household that it was second nature. "I was just curious as to when our first mission will be."
"Naturally, whenever you all are ready," Ozpin responded as he took another sip from his coffee cup. He smiled at his students after lowering his cup. "...But I have a feeling you all will be ready very soon."
"Really?" Lyra's eyes glimmered with pride from hearing the compliment, especially coming from the headmaster himself! Ozpin nodded before adjusting his glasses, a knowing look on his face.
"Yes. I can sense something special here...I just know it."
