Oz's Test
"Alright, students. Today, we'll be doing a fun little exercise...well, fun for me, anyway. Today, the goal is...to make it past me to the other side of the room!"
All of the students in the room gaped at Professor Ozpin with wide eyes and open mouths. The whole school hadn't stopped classes just because of the Mittlefranken Massacre; in fact, the school had added extra classes in order to train the students quicker and help them forget what had happened. While it was working for those who hadn't been present, all of Team LINT was pretty traumatized still, with only Lyra managing to pretend she was fine. Even Janelle found it hard to study and focus.
"Yes, students, I'm serious. You'll have to make it past me! I want you all to use everything you have," Ozpin had a smirk playing across his lips. Tanya wondered just how he could pretend to be happy... "Do not hold back. I want to see everyone's best strategies to get past me. I will be grading you off of your teamwork. Now, Team RWBY, you'll be first!"
"Well this is going to be incredibly fucking fun," Lyra grumbled moodily. The massacre wasn't the only thing weighing heavily on them; Nico and Tanya were still as furious as ever with Janelle, and Janelle was feeling quite confused about everything that had been going on. Lyra herself was just as angry, if not more upon having her teammates insulted, even if it was by her other team member. "Forced to work with her..."
"If I recall correctly, you were just as adamant about not working with a Grimm," Janelle said, feeling the uncomfortable stare of her team as they glared at her. Having to defend herself while they were all in such a difficult state of mind felt ridiculous. "And you called Tanya annoying, remember? You are a hypocrite."
"Here's the difference; I realized that my team is more than that. And I didn't call Tanya a 'no one', either!"
"You called Nico some awful names."
"Th-That's not the point! The point is that friends don't disown each other for anything," Lyra scolded. "Remember? It's our responsibility to accept each other? Yeah, you broke that. And you're not even sorry! We had all just gone through a massacre, and you were worried about your parents instead! Where do your priorities even lie!?"
Janelle remained quiet at this. Not even sorry...Priorities...This was what her family approved of, that meant it had to be right, right...?
Tanya and Nico still didn't say a word, but the former was gripping her pencil so hard her knuckles were turning white. Lyra just sighed, her eyes fading from it's red state before turning flecked with blue once more.
"I don't know why I'm wasting my time. You clearly don't get it."
"No, you are the one who does not get it!" Janelle frowned. "I was not born into a world where acceptance is based off of friends. My family did not approve of Tanya, so I followed their lead! I do not have the luxury of disobeying them. Besides, they are my family. I cannot betray them in such a fashion! I already have disappointed them by continuing down this path, I cannot make it worse!"
"You seem to be pretty good at disappointing people, so why stop now?" Lyra didn't hold back whatsoever, partially fueled not just by Janelle, but also her pent up anger toward what had happened. "First your family, now us. So yeah, go follow your damn family!"
It wasn't easy to see Janelle get so angered, but with Lyra taunting her, Janelle was being pushed past her breaking point. Her emotions were turmoiling inside of her; anger, fury, sadness,, but mostly guilt. Deep inside of her, Janelle knew...that she was wrong.
But what could she do to change that...?
Her family had placed her into these restrictions, and...and she couldn't disappoint them further. That was just the way things had to be...
"Team LJNT, you're up next!" Professor Ozpin chirped after easily knocking out Team RWBY. Pyrrha gave an encouraging little cheer for them, but none of the team was in the mood for niceties. As they made their way to the floor, Janelle held her head high. She had to prove right now that she was qualified as a huntress, that her mess-ups at the incident had just been nerves, that she was still worthy... "Ready, begin!"
Lyra raised her axe, ready to sprint forward when Janelle's arrows rained down toward their Professor. Ozpin just shrugged and dodged easily, batting some of them away with his cane. Lyra rushed toward him, slashing her axe horizontally. He blocked, quickly turning and jabbing her in the stomach with his cane before kicking her to the ground and whirling around to block.
Tanya's staff hit Ozpin's cane, and she quickly blocked Ozpin's next jab. He feinted an attack above before swiping her feet out from underneath her. Nico phased through Tanya's falling body, reappearing once she was above Tanya to swing her blade, but Ozpin just blocked casually, adjusting his glasses while keeping up with Nico's quick slashes easily. Nico quickly activated her semblance to pass through him, and as she reappeared on the other side, Ozpin reached behind himself, grabbing her by the cape before throwing her back onto the ground in front of him.
Nico hit the ground hard, barely blocking Ozpin's cane with her sword before she rolled away. Lyra grit her teeth, knowing they needed a new strategy.
"Lemon Lime!"
Lyra approached Ozpin, weaving through his attacks. She lunged forward, grabbing ahold of Ozpin to throw him upward...when he avoided her attack, taking advantage of her misstep to smash his cane downward. Lyra fell to the ground, and Nico had to activate her semblance in order to avoid cutting her partner in half as her sword fell right where Lyra was. Lyra quickly recovered, rolling out of the way.
"Peacock!"
Nico and Tanya both rushed toward Ozpin, slicing back and forth rapidly in front of their professor. Ozpin was able to keep up with both of them easily, managing to push his cane down onto Tanya's foot and throw her off balance before dispatching Nico.
"Daybreak!"
Tanya spun her staff, retreating as Baldr flipped into it's rifle form. She quickly fired three lightening rockets straight at Ozpin, who ducked under all of them before blocking Lyra's lunge. He quickly used his cane to smack Lyra multiple times before firing fiery dust out of his cane, sending Lyra backward as her aura flickered back and forth.
Janelle frowned. She hadn't been able to do anything this fight...Lyra hadn't called out any combos including her. She knew she could get past him, she could do it...! She tried to call out to Lyra, but the leader just ignored her, calling out a combo between the three of them that ultimately failed. Janelle grit her teeth.
She's have to do it herself, then.
Janelle fired a bunch of arrows, all of them dusted with red hot fire. As they soared toward Ozpin, they began to explode. Ozpin dodged before taking advantage of this, using her arrows as a way of creating distance between him and the rest of team LJNT. Janelle lunged onward, using her bow to block and attack. She wasn't anywhere near quick enough to stop Ozpin from quickly disabling her, his cane flinging her weapon out of her hands while simultaneously swiping Tanya off of her feet.
"That's enough," Ozpin straightened himself up, extending a hand to help Tanya up. He adjusted his glasses, looking up at the screen that showed everyone's drained aura. "...What happened?"
No one answered.
"You all lost your coordination. Your teamwork was abysmal compared to what I've seen before," Ozpin tapped his cane against the ground. "So, what happened?"
Everyone remained silent. Ozpin sighed.
"You're all free to go...except for Miss Torres. I'd like to have a word."
The rest of the team didn't waste any time getting out of there. Lyra shot Janelle a dirty look as she left, and Janelle awkwardly just fiddled with the hem of her dress.
"Headmaster Ozpin, what can I assist you with?"
"...Miss Torres, I'd like to ask you a couple of questions. First off...Why did you choose to become a huntress?"
"You already know, do you not? I put it on my application form."
Ozpin stayed silent, so Janelle sighed and relented.
"I became a huntress to protect people, to protect my family."
"And what obstacles did you hit?" Ozpin sipped his coffee casually, not even breathing hard from their mock battle.
"My family did not want me to become a Huntress. They thought I would be better off studying engineering, following the family name..."
"And you disobeyed them by coming here."
"I-Yes," Janelle sighed once more. She couldn't deny that fact. "I know that becoming a Huntress was the right decision, even if I must stand against them..."
"...I see. So, you've thought they were wrong before. Why do you keep thinking that what they say is always right?" Ozpin said casually, but the meaning to his words was sharp and enough to make Janelle's heart practically stop.
"Pardon?"
"Your parents raised you a specific way, but that doesn't mean it's right. You know this, or else you wouldn't have joined this academy. I encourage you to think about that fact a little more. It's okay to be wrong," Ozpin turned away. "But could you really live with yourself forever if you continue to turn away your team?"
"I...It is not that simple. I cannot just ostracize my family! I cannot turn away from their ideals, expectations, and-"
"No one is saying you need to do that completely. But your team would defend you from anything, and you cast them aside."
"How do you know that-"
"Listen well, Miss Torres," Ozpin interrupted her. "I believe that all four of you are...destined for something great," Ozpin said. He began to walk away nonchalantly. "I would hate to be proven wrong."
"Headmaster-"
"Good day. Remember, what you value is only shown through your actions and words...Staying silent is not an option. What do you really value?"
