CHAPTER TWO
It was just an average day in the Glade, and Lizzie was bored. Being a medic meant that she didn't have much to do when no one was hurt, so she was used to being bored, but that didn't mean it was any fun. It was in the afternoon, and none of the Gladers haven't got hurt yet.
She knows it's a bit selfish to wish this, but she wished someone would just get hurt so she would have something to do because she hated being bored. Since she was bored and had nothing better to do, she was helping Frypan out in the kitchen.
"It's probably smart you gave me the job of cleaning instead of helping you cook. I would ruin everything and probably burn myself in the process." Lizzie admitted.
"Nah, I'm sure you would be fine." Frypan laughed and playfully elbowed her. "And thanks for the help. It's a pain cleaning after I'm done."
Shrugging her shoulders, Lizzie smiles. "I don't mind helping. I was bored out of my mind."
"Yeah," Frypan nods. He chuckles. "I saw you walking around the Glade looking lost."
They both looked over towards the Box when they heard the familiar sound of the alarm that signaled everyone the Box was coming up. She didn't even realize it was already the day when they got a new Greenie and supplies for the month.
"Finally, something exciting happens!" She exclaimed with excitement laced in her voice, grinning as some of the Gladers nearby laughed at how excited she was for this. That was something the Gladers loved about her. She always somehow found a way to make them laugh. Plus, she just seemed to brighten up the place wherever she went with just her smile. In a way, she brought hope to the group.
Conversation instantly filled the air, everyone wondering who the Greenie looked like, and some guessed what kind of job he would get.
"Short person coming through." Lizzie mumbled as she pushed past the boys who surrounded the Box. She made her way to the front so she could see better.
"I think you use your height for advantage," Minho comments, crossing his arms while she stands next to him. "You know you're actually not that short, right?"
She smiles innocently at him. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
He rolled his eyes even though he had a slight smile on his face.
"Alright, somebody open it up." Alby demanded while Minho and Gally stepped towards the Box gate and opened it up.
Inside were boxes of different supplies they needed and a dark-haired, scared-looking boy. He was backed up against the wall, squinting his eyes because of the blinding sun as he looked at everyone.
Lizzie jumps down into the Box since she had the job of greeting the Greenies and giving them a tour because, for some reason, whenever Gally did it, he just scared the Greenies more.
"Hi, I'm Lizzie." She greeted.
She rolled her eyes when some of the boys continued talking to each other quietly about the Greenie as if the Greenie wasn't right in front of them. The boy looked at her with wide eyes, and she knew he was surprised to see her since there were a group of boys.
Lizzie looks at him with kind eyes and a gentle smile. "Don't worry about them. They're just curious and have no manners."
She reaches a hand towards him, and he hesitantly took her hand. By his expression, she knew he was still scared about all of this. She didn't blame him. She felt the same way when she first showed up in the Glade, but now it's home to her. And it will eventually be home to him. "Do you remember your name?" She asked, helping the boy up.
He was quiet for a minute, looking panicked for a minute before he then looks relieved. He nofd. "Y-Yeah. Winston. My name is Winston."
She smiles and nods. "It's nice to meet you, Winston. I'm Lizzie." After they got help out of the Box, Winston looked around the Glade with confusion at seeing the four walls trapping them in.
"Welcome to the Glade, Greenie," Alby pats him on the shoulder, sending him a smile. He turns to the Gladers standing around the Box. "Okay, Shanks, start getting all of the supplies out."
There was a murmur of replies as the Gladers started moving around. Alby then crosses his arms, turning to face Winston with a smile. "I'm Alby, the leader here in the Glade."
"And this is Newt." He points over at the blonde who stood next to him and Newt waves at Winston. "He's in charge when I'm not around."
"Us Gladers are happy that he's around all the time." Lizzie chimes in. She sends Newt a teasing smile, leaning her elbow on his shoulder. "'Cause I'm sure things would be chaos in the Glade with Newt in charge.
"Ha-ha," Newt comments sarcastically, rolling his eyes. Then, he playfully shoves her off of him, earning a laugh from her. "Shut up, Shank."
Alby chuckles as he watches the two. It was obvious to everyone that Lizzie and Newt had a brother-sister type of friendship. They would often banter with each other and annoy each other from time to time, and the two even had nicknames they used that only they could call each other that, but no matter what, though, they were always there for each other. Alby put a hand on Lizzie's shoulder, sharing a smile with her before glancing back at Winston with a small smile.
"And Lizzie is going to be giving you a tour of the place. Then, after that, you'll be trying out all of the jobs tomorrow so you can see what one works out for you."
"Alright, then I guess that's my cue." Lizzie chuckled.
"Follow me." She started walking away, gesturing for Winston to follow her. She led Winston over to the Watch Tower, and they sat down with their legs dangling off the side.
"Okay, so what you were in earlier, we call that the Box, which is where we get our supplies for the month and a new Greenie." She explained. When he looked at her with confusion, she explained that a Greenie is just what they call new people who arrive in the Glade.
"We also are going to have a bonfire tonight in your honor." She continued.
He tilts his head to the side, looking at her with confusion. "Why are you doing that?"
"It's what we do when Greenies arrive." She replies. "It's just something to make the Greenie feel welcomed, I guess." She gestures around the Glade. "We call this place the Glade," She points at the walls surrounding the Glade. "And outside of those walls is the Maze, and trust me, it's somewhere you don't wanna be." She told him, which made him look at her with curiosity.
She changed the subject before he could ask a question about the Maze. "Some of the boys here have been here for around three years. During that time, they made some jobs and rules to survive."
"The jobs are Runners, Slicers, Builders, Track-Hoes, Med-Jacks and Cook. So today, you'll try out all of those and see which one you would be better for." She explained.
"Okay," Winston looks at her, furrowing his eyebrows. "You said there are rules. What are they?"
"Yeah," Lizzie nods. "We only have three rules here. One, everyone does their part. There's an amount of balance to surviving here, which is why we can't have anyone slacking off. Two, never hurt another Glader. We need to have trust in each other. Without trust, everything would just be in chaos."
"And Greenie, the third rule, probably the most important rule is, never go outside of those doors." She points over to the large closed doors. "Only Runners are allowed out in the Maze since they try to find a way out."
"You're probably hungry, so I'll take you to Frypan. He's the keeper of the Cooks here." Lizzie said as she stood up, with Winston following her. "We call each leader of the jobs the keeper."
They climb down the Watch Tower and walk over to the kitchen. "Hey, is this the Greenie?" Frypan asked, getting a plate of food ready.
Lizzie nods and smiles a bit, pointing at the dark-haired boy beside her. "Yep, this is Winston."
"Nice to meet you, Winston. I'm Frypan." Frypan introduced himself, handing Winston the plate of food.
Winston sent him a smile, taking the plate from Frypan. "Nice to meet you, Frypan, and thanks for the food."
Frypan shrugs his shoulders and smiles. "It's not a problem."
"Here you go, Liz." He handed her a plate of food.
Taking the plate from him, Lizzie smiles. "Thanks, Fry, you're the best."
It was around dinner time, so most of the Gladers were already eating. Lizzie walked over to the table Minho and Newt were at, and Winston followed her.
"Hi, guys." She greeted, taking a seat beside Minho, and Winston sat next to Newt, across from where she sat.
"Hey. How's the Greenie doing?" Minho asked while eating some of his food.
Lizzie looks at Winston, who was sitting beside her and he sent her a smile before he started eating. Lizzie smiles, glancing back at Minho. "I think he's doing pretty good."
"Good." Minho comments. He smiles. "I'm sure he'll fit right in with us."
"I agree." Lizzie nods. A look of disgust had formed on her face when Minho talked with his mouth full. "And do you not know what manners are?"
"I do." Minho shrugs. "I just don't care at the moment."
Newt chuckles. "Well, at least he's honest."

Soon it was night time which meant it was time for the bonfire.
"Alright, boys, light 'em up!" Alby exclaimed as he and some boys threw sticks on fire into the woodpile, making a big fire.
Once the wood was lit, everyone cheered, and the bonfire started. Some boys were dancing, some were eating and talking, and some were wrestling with each other.
Lizzie usually just stayed by herself, watching the flames of the fire dance in front of her. She held onto a glass of Gally's drink he always made for the bonfires, but it was honestly awful. She looks over when Minho walked over to her. "So, how is Lizzie on this fine night?" He dramatically asked, smiling at her.
Lizzie chuckles. "I'm fine." She took a sip of the drink in her hand and immediately regretted it. She coughed a few times and sat the cup on the ground beside her while Minho laughed a bit.
"I don't even know why I got this drink, I hate it."
"Yeah, it's terrible." Minho nodded in agreement.
"Do you wanna dance me?" He suddenly questioned, which surprised her. She looked at him with wide eyes, and she felt her heart skip a beat when he asked her that question. Sure, they've danced at bonfires many times before, but for some reason, this time felt different.
"You want to dance with me?" She repeated, emphasizing the words 'you' and 'me' while oointing at herself.
Minho laughs a bit. "Yeah." He smiles widley. "Come on. It'll be fun."
Lizzie shakes her head, feeling her face heat up. She turned her gaze to her lap in hopes of hiding her blush and bit her lower lip nervously. "No. Nope. I'm good. I like staying here by my lonesome and stare at the fire."
"Now that's just sad." Minho remarked. He suddenly grabbed her arm, and he pulled her up to her feet despite her protests.
"Don't worry, the fire will still be here after we're done." He teased her. Even though she rolled her eyes a small smile tugged on her lips.
She dramatically sighs. "Fine."
Minho grinned at her. He dragged her over to where some of the boys were dancing at. Even though she was an awful dancer (Minho wasn't any better at dancing) and most likely made a fool of herself, she still had a lot of fun with her friends.
A/N I'm currently loving lizzie & minho ngl
